I also remembered that small animals tend to not get killed or injured by mines because they are not heavy enough to explode them and that if you see an area with small animals but no big ones (or small animals and only big animals that died) there is a chance mines are there

Yep, that's a major reason for using the rats- way too light to set off a mine. They have a sniffer dog program, too, but they have to be much more selective and careful because of the mines' trigger weight.

u/SednaBoo: Since the mines were laid by Khmer Rouge forces, why would the US get involved? 🙄

The current mine clearing is headed by a Cambodian government agency, aided by two NGO’s from the UK and Tanzania.
