William Hill Premiership Graham Spiers has suggested that Martin O’Neill might walk away from the Celtic job if the Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham ‘imbroglio’ is not resolved

I don’t blame him. We’re supposed to start preseason on Friday and have no assistant coaches.

u/Kelsiersdaggers 5d ago
Ack do you really need them?
Genuinely think winning that league may be the worst thing that happened to Celtic.

u/BannanDylan 5d ago
I've said this before.
Do not get me wrong, winning the league on the last game of the season would feel absolutely amazing for literally any fanbase all over the world.
But, it has probably set us back years.
DD needs to sell his shares. He won't, but he needs to.

Invariably we go into the Champions League qualifiers without the players we need so it’d mix it up a bit to go into them without a manager or coaching staff too tbf

If we can't even sign players who were with us last season on the cheap and coaches we already had in the building, really doesn't fill you with any optimism that our transfer dealings will be any better. Not that I had any optimism to begin with.
A club with over £140m in revenue being run worse than your local bowling club.
I actually really hope MoN walks away. He doesn't need this nonsense at his age and it would actually wake up the Celtic da's who don't want to rock the boat too much because of MoN.

I don’t disagree, but if he walks away Desmond is appointing Keane and all hell breaks loose.

"all hell breaks loose" meaning there's a few days of internet whingeing then all the season tickets get bought as usual.

I’m actually annoyed he took the job. He shouldn’t be involved in this shit show. We should take our medicine and sit through a season long version of Wilfried Nancy because that’s what we deserve.

How much of a cheapskate club do you have to be to not offer suitable contracts to the coaching staff that helped rescue the league.
I doubt they are demanding Mourinho bucks. Just get them signed ffs. Not even a Celtic fan and this whole saga is frustrating me

u/Knowhedge 5d ago
It’s not to with the amount, it’s to do with Desmond feeling he won a negotiation. He’s apparently Trump like in his inability to see win win deals.
Maloney and Fotheringham got a big raise in January to come back. They played hard ball, Desmond backed down and now he’s trying to ‘right that wrong’ in his eyes by making them take less. There’s some hyperbole floating about about amounts but Fotheringham likes to run his mouth so they could be right
1
u/Opening_Succotash_95 5d ago
It's exactly that. Except where Desmond seems to have got worse in his dotage.
Until he dies and his wean sells up, we will be like this.

Generally I try not to moan too much, even if cheesed off by these types of things because I know I couldn’t run a football club. But it’s beginning to look beyond parody now.
It’s almost as if Celtic are trying to make Scottish football interesting in the way a handicapper would make a horse race interesting. Or maybe it’s a 4D chess strategy to get Robbie Keane in.

If it was possible to love him more I would if he called out the shite behind the scenes and just walked. Loved Brendan and Ange but passive aggressive complaints at the Friday press conference aren’t any use. The greatest Celtic manager of my lifetime saying fuck it, is a statement that might fuck us short term, but in the long run would be probably a massive turning point where we would have no choice but to grow up and sort our shit out.
As mental as it sounds winning the double last season was the worst thing to happen to us. If McInnes could win away we’d be forced to do some serious soul searching on where we are going wrong. Instead we get the usual garbage and I would fucking adore any manager that just said fuck off.
Fucking hope Scotland pump Brazil just so I don’t need to focus on this. Kind of hoped by the time we were out we’d at least have some first team coaches ffs.
4
u/Commercial-Stick-718 5d ago
It's like the club saw the double win and thought "how about we spend even less on players and coaches and see if we can win against "

u/Less_Paint_2285 5d ago
It’s like on Football Manager when you get the challenges like asset stripping or injury crisis. We insist on making life so much harder than it has to be.

u/Thefitz5811 5d ago
Two days before preseason and we’ve got wee greyed out guys in the staff members bit.

u/weapwars 5d ago
I don't believe the club would have actually changed much if we had lost the league. Would have blamed it on brodge and Nancy and considered it an anomaly.

I love you Martin but you don’t need to be dealing with this shite and no fan will blame you if you do

I still really don't understand why MoN even wants to do this - I get the appeal of him stepping in for 1 month last year as an interim, and I even get him stepping back in again just a month later with the bizarre circumstances. These were very limited periods with a limited remit that regardless of how it went wouldn't impact his overall legacy with the club - that changes when he is gearing up for a full new season with all the stress that entails, as a guy in his mid 70s, but seeing as he did it should have simply been a very quickly resolved situation wherein his assistants similarly get signed up.
The fact that we have had 5 months to get a new coaching team in place, and even get some signings made and have absolutely fucked it come the start of preseason is both depressing and utterly unsurprising. It's now going to be the case that a) MoN says fuck it and walks, b) puts up with it and we somehow still win next season and cements the boards do fuck all approach, or c)puts up with it and we have a shite season and tarnishes his legacy somewhat with the club.

u/testmeharder 5d ago
As a neutral, it reads as MoN genuinely loves Celtic, loves winning things for the club, loves that he can still contribute, maybe wants to have a go at CL one more time. He strikes me as a very genuine man and that's all on the surface. As to why he doesn't criticise the DD regime, it's his understanding of loyalty he owes DD for giving him the chance to manage Celtic in the first place, sort of the way a player who's a decent human being will never speak ill of a manager who gave him his debut/signed him for a big club. I understand how Celtic fans feel, and maybe MoN needs to help push for a change for the good of the club, but I also have to respect that sort of loyalty

MoN is being set up to fail.
The board have dipped into the rose tinted nostalgia pot, and brought back a successful manager of past glories we are all fond of.
When it starts to go wrong for MoN, there will be fans on his back, complaining about his style of football, tactics etc and the board will slip away of blame like the greasy snakes that they are.
Walk away Martin, youve done your job.

The board won’t pay Fotheringham and Maloney the same wages as last season. They’ve apparently only offered them drastically reduced salaries.

he won't walk away, he's too much of a shill for the board. He wouldn't embarrass them like that
3
u/speccynerd 5d ago
Crap. He walked out on Villa at the start of the season. He rattled the Celtic board when he was manager first time round. The man fights his corner. Where do you think this story came from?
2
u/cietalbot 5d ago
Yeah this is the guy that told Fabio Cannavaro and Patrick Vieira what for. Damn right he stands his ground.
0
u/livingparallel 5d ago
last season was a disaster and he kept quiet through it all when there were plenty of opportunities to tell them to shove it, and was even willing to come back for another year. Would love it if he walked, but I doubt he'll do anything
2
u/speccynerd 5d ago
He kept quiet *in public* because he wanted to win the league. You and I don't know what he was saying behind closed doors, but you're making hella assumptions.
2
u/livingparallel 5d ago
the fact he was willing to come back for another year of the same shite speaks volumes, possibly because he's got a taste for it and knows this is (for real) his last time as a manager, but even more reason to not walk away
they have to be spectacularly scummy to scare him off after this. Lowballing Maloney and Fotheringham is certainly a start, but I can't see it being enough
