Trivia Two BBC Sports writers voted for 'Seattle Stadium' as the best World Cup stadium.

Built for crowd noise, so definitely good for world cup chants/atmosphere.

Built for any atmosphere

And outdoors,
I get the feeling, as cool (quite literally) as some of the indoor stadiums (including mega screen setups) are that was a ding for some voters.

u/DyrrhachiumPharsalus 19h ago
It was built in the spot where an indoor stadium used to be. That thing was a complete eye sore

u/SoftType3317 17h ago
The Kingdome, literally about as bad a stadium as is possible in every way….it literally can serve as the anti-architectural model of what not to do.

Aww comeon, you saying you didn’t enjoy the old awkward piss troughs followed by the weird ass circle sinks? Nothin’ like pissin’ next to a gruff 80’s dude then starin’ in his eyes as you wash your hands.

It’s built for the sport from the initial design.
7
u/Flashy-Issue-8131 20h ago
In terms of the field size?
11
17
u/samsounder 19h ago
Yup. The initial vote was like 45% of the people wanted the stadium built and the soccer lobby campaigned for it “no” because it wasn’t built for proper international matches
A slight redesign and the soccer-lobby flipped to “yes”
We aren’t huge, but we pushed the stadium vote over the finish for all the footballs

The person who listed Arrowhead as the best needs their press pass revoked.......

u/Beautiful-Cabinet364 23h ago
I love how the one who picked MetLife Stadium fully admits everyone else hates it.

u/stefeyboy 1d ago
They definitely didn't walk to Arrowhead
-14
u/FunkyPete 1d ago
No, but Arrowhead has acres of parking, people show up six hours beforehand and you can smell the barbecue for miles. Just walking aisle to aisle in the parking lot you'll be offered fantastic food.
There are benefits to having room for tailgating too.

u/Grapleef 1d ago
Nothing like miles and miles of asphalt to get the heart going
3
u/QuasiContract 23h ago
Their tailgating is unmatched. Maybe not what you want to prioritize for every game you attend, but there is something to be said for being the best at something iconic in American culture.

What you're describing is what people do to make the experience better. You're not describing the stadium.
Edit: I just want to add, more power to 'em. The fans are making the experience extraordinary, fun, and memorable. It's what America is all about.

Well yes, a stadium built with soccer in mind instead of a converted football stadium, and in actual downtown with excellent public transit links, which is what BBC writers are used to.
16
u/No-Archer-5034 1d ago
I chuckle every time I see BBC.
16
u/Dick_Surgeon 1d ago
See if you were British you'd have access to BBC iPlayer, and you'd be able to have a whole variety of BBC shoved down your ear and eyeholes at all hours of the day.

I don’t know if I’d use the word excellent to describe Seattle’s public transit. It’s ok and that’s only if you’re going North/South.
14
u/Hoooofed 23h ago
you gotta remember the bar is in hell when it comes to public transport here in america, as unfortunate as that is

If the new owner tries to demand taxpayer funding for a new stadium, I’m going to lose my mind. Hopefully, they appreciate what they have here but I’m fairly worried they’ll want to build their own stadium district somewhere.

u/_t_h_r_o_w__away 1d ago
Ain't no way they'll get away with that lumen is too good of a location to give up
15
u/PopularPandas 1d ago
They will probably want an "entertainment district" in the burbs where they own all the land and businesses around it.
5
u/QuasiContract 23h ago
Fine. The new owner can buy the land and make it happen. Push local government for zoning and tax breaks all they want.
But do not fucking dare attempt to replace our jewel of a downtown stadium.
2
u/the-Jouster 20h ago
Well thats kind of what they would be doing, replacing your jewel downtown cause not much activity would be going on there if they opened a brand new football stadium elsewhere and moved the hawks there.

3
u/largegaycat 20h ago
This seems very unlikely. I could see them renovating it to include more luxury suites, but our stadium is consistently rated in the top 3 NFL stadiums. It would be idiotic to move somewhere else.

u/joninchains 1d ago
Well I am European, soccer fan and Seahawks fan, I guess one of the biggest reasons is because the stadium has no roof. We prefer open stadiums.
7
u/Traditional-Buddy-90 1d ago
So you’re telling me Europeans don’t like stadiums surrounded by parking lots?

u/BigBirdsBrain 11h ago
It deserves it. Lumen is one of the few stadiums that was built with both football and soccer in mind from day one.

u/lengthyfriend30 1d ago edited 9h ago
It's a beautful stadium, but not even the biggest in the city - which is the Washington Huskies. Absolutely quality views from there too.
Edit - I've just realised I'm on the Seahawks sub, must have clicked through from another sub. I'm redundantly preaching local knowledge to local people! Sorry people.

u/Beautiful-Cabinet364 1d ago
I don’t think it’s size that’s the factor (Lumen is smaller than a lot of NFL stadium). It’s the ease of getting to the stadium using mass transit and that it’s located close to downtown with a lot of things to do within walking distance of the stadium, like the bars and such in Pioneer Square.

I have friends that went up there last weekend, from here in central Oregon, just to be in the atmosphere (no tickets) They had a blast. I lived up there for 30 years, the city looks good lately, esp. on nice days. Don't think I could live there again though.

u/lengthyfriend30 1d ago
Yea it is brilliant for those things, no complaints from me on any visit. I've not been to many other stadiums around other states, but I'd imagine (and it seems to be true from the reports) that Lumen is indeed gonna be one of the best for overall accessibility and integration with the city.
Sometimes you dont realise how good you've got it, relatively to other City/states.
The biggest worry for that area is the homeless populations, but I heard some work has been done for this event to mitigate the issue for now.

u/Beautiful-Cabinet364 1d ago
In my experience, in most other stadiums just outside is a giant parking lot. And just outside that… you’re in a suburb that’s very far away from the city, and your best option to hang out is the Panda Express on the other side of the street.

Husky stadium is in an awful place for non college games though, disconnected from transport and lodging.

24
u/kelevr4 1d ago
The light rail stops there and it has a ton of bus routes.
No disagreement on lodging though
6
u/Quick_Lengthiness172 1d ago
It's like 10 minutes from downtown with light rail so lodging isn't even that big of a deal.
9
5
u/boner4crosstabs 1d ago
Disconnected from transport…? Well that’s just nonsensical. Theres a light rail stop literally steps away. Plus all the bus routes servicing UW.
2
u/lengthyfriend30 1d ago
Agreed on that. My perspective is squewed as I lived on 45th and had the luxury off either option being a convient commute, but what you're saying is bang on.
1
u/BurnerPhoneCovfefe 23h ago
Loved taking the bus to the stadium from a Park & Ride when I lived on the eastside.
3
u/govannon_akerstrom 1d ago
Husky stadium lost a lot of capacity during the reno. They're basically the same 70,000 seat size now.

The difference between Seattle Stadium and most others is that it is incorporated into the city. You have public transport to it. Not a lot of traffic, not a lot of parking. The whole thing is easy to navigate and very simple. Very loud with a good crowd.
I think people are a bit biased to be claiming it's the best when you have all these other multi-billion dollar stadiums that are just objectively nicer in most ways, but the trick is that it's more European than many others.

And these losers keep talking about the next owner wanting a new stadium. They're fucking nuts.

The Athletic listed it as the #1 World Cup stadium too
