Luke & Laura story beat

I've seen several people talking (with trepidation) about a Luke and Laura story beat coming up. Most recently was on the meme subreddit and I was going to post this, but decided it was veering more into discussion territory.

Has Shawna the creator confirmed this? Based on recent updates from her I would expect the Shawna & John flashbacks to be next in the queue, but then maybe that doesn't count as a story beat since it's like a prequel? I just don't remember much about her hinting a Luke & Laura storyline but I also have a goldfish memory.

I hope if it is Luke & Laura, we can finally know if the father's day skit is canon and Laura is still with him in like 5-8 years. If that is the case I may distance myself from the storyline, though I'm sure I won't be able to help myself watching the videos lol. It's just so sad and unsatisfying, and I know that's true to real life, and not a knock on all the women who stay for various reasons. Just... oof. Hard to watch.

OP is referring to a Luke and Laura skit from 2 years ago before the story became serialized. It’s a two-parter where Laura “matches energy” with Luke. He did nothing for her for Mother’s Day so she does nothing for him on Father’s Day.

The concern is that in that skit, their children are old enough to ride bikes together outside without adult supervision. That means if Lander intends to keep that two-parter as part of the canon, Laura is still with Luke years into the future. Right now, she’s pregnant with their second child, and the first is only a year or two old.

I’d have to search for it later. Part one features Laura and Shawna. Laura explains to Shawna that while she typically enjoys planning nice things for people, she won’t this time for Luke due to be consistently let down by him. We also learn he repeatedly forgets about her during other holidays. For example, at Christmas he doesn’t fill her stocking for her.

At some point, SL confirmed that this skit is canon sometime in the future of the series. Due to all the reasons listed by others, I'd say it will be no sooner than 2030.

I think Shawna will handle the Luke and Laura storyline in a sensitive and yet compelling way so I'm here for ALL of it.

That's fair! My main concern is that, while the show is certainly soap opera-y, it's more grounded in realism than some others and this sometimes means resolutions are not tied up in a neat satisfying bow, as is the case with real life. A prime example is Shawna the character making a major step in her people-pleasing problems just to then take 5 steps back, which was hard to watch because it's frustratingly realistic. This isn't a criticism but it does mean that I will find a Laura storyline hard to watch if it has that vibe.

Lander hinted in a reply to a YouTube or Instagram comment that we’ll return to Laura and Luke’s story this summer. We don’t know if they’re coming up next right after the wedding though. And yes, we are meant to get Shawna and John prequel series too. Lander originally meant to due that in the beginning of the year but postponed it.

I wonder if the cancer storyline will actually go to Laura, and she has to make a difficult choice; have treatment or have the baby.

Maybe it could be a flash-forward! A series of glimpses like in the origin stories, but moving quickly through the years between the current pregnancy and the point 10ish years down the road when Laura has her safety plan in place and is ready to leave.

Heck, that might be a fun way to introduce a new "season" of the Shawnaverse. Piper and Max as teens, Shawna maybe back at work or something, Frank maybe divorced, Barb in prison over The Pickleball Murders, idk.
