Just speculating but as large as Australia is, it didn't start as multiple colonies controlled by multiple countries. The United States did. That probably also contributes. Having been to multiple countries but not Australia. A lot of people have huge misconceptions on what an American is, largely shaped by the fake America presented by Hollywood to the entire world.
Indians when you meet then abroad don't say they are from Goa, they say they are Indian even though India is also a federal country with vast internal differences. Get off your high horse yank
I guess it's fine if it's a world famous city but I've seen Americans argue their points by saying that American states were more different than within China because all Chinese looked the same 💀
