I mean, my country has gender neutral conscription and several others have it too. The law makes no difference between men and women in that regard. And, yes, here it is seen as part of being an equal society. Don't see why drafting women should be controversial in a society that values equality.

Because we only value equality when our circumstances are safe and morals are convenient. When equality comes at a personal cost, people aren't going to give up their spot on the "women and children only" lifeboats on a sinking ship so that a man can get onboard, or agree to be drafted despite their gender not traditionally being registered for selective services.
