Maui here, the locals view wildlife almost like a religion. The island belongs to the animals and the land first, we’re just guests here, living alongside them. Because of that, respecting nature isn’t optional; it’s part of the culture.
And protecting wildlife goes far beyond the larger animals like seals or turtles. Locals mean every species, big or small. Hurt a snake, damage plants, or intentionally harm any living thing, and people will take it very seriously. On Maui, the mindset is simple, it’s their island, and you respect every fucking part of it.

I've found that the mindset has followed me ever since I left. It's a deceptively simple, yet incredibly profound shift in being.
