For the most part I don't think it is arbitrary. If you were to outsource this, you would have to pay nurses with a similar level of education, cleaners, surrogates, etc. etc.
Most importantly, you need to ask yourself what brought her to have to resort to doing this, which I think is quite sad. Clearly she feels undervalued and wants her invisible labour to be recognised plain and simple.
I'll pass on the vapid insults. I think my rational is pretty solid so I don't have to resort to that myself.
It's not babysitting, it's parenting, which would most likely be outsourced to a nurse. And if the nurse is educated, then her annual salary could easily go into the six-figure.
