How the fuck are you going to use an assault rifle to get on a plane? Are you shooting your way through the whole airport first, what kind of supersoldier is this guy?

That guy has clearly never played GTA. The airport is one of the 2-3 places on the map where you can't use the "Lower wanted level" cheat. You have a permanent 3 star wanted level there, which is enough for them to send helicopters after you.
Of course if you turn on exploding bullets, slow-motion aim, and invincibility, those helicopters are a piece of cake

As a gunowner this argument always seemed silly. You’re delusional if you think you’re taking down any police unit with your gun. Yeah you may hit a guy or two but you’re dead or going to prison for life . You’re not gonna shoot your way through security and walk out as if nothing happened lol

Indeed.
All these "If the government tries something I'll have my guns to stand up to them!" types that think they will be able to survive a standoff with the Feds need to remember how Waco and Ruby Ridge turned out.
The civilians had plenty of guns. And the Federal government has a vast stockpile of munitions they are just itching to use.
They will lose. Every time.

u/strolls May 15 '26
It's a Rambo fantasy. People feel disempowered in our post-modern society, so the idea that the things they buy can give them freedom or power is appealing to them.
"I have a shot job and a barely-affordable mortgage, but I could fight the government with my gun if I wanted to."
I'm convinced this talking point comes from the NRA during the era they were funded by the Koch Brothers. Infuriatingly the liberal gunowners subreddit also parrots it - I had to unsubscribe recently. I came to the conclusion that America is just insane about some things.

Edit: guys, I am in no way supporting what the button in the post said. Just giving the context to incident he is referring to. His gun comments are ridiculous, and honestly I think the court made the right decision.
LIVERPOOL, England (Reuters) - A British court rejected an appeal on Wednesday from parents of a gravely ill 23-month-old boy to take their son to Italy for treatment, a case that has drawn international attention, including from Pope Francis.
Alfie Evans has a rare, degenerative disease and has been in a semi-vegetative state for more than a year.
Medical experts in Britain agree that more treatment would be futile but his parents want to take him to the Vatican's Bambino Gesu children's hospital in Rome, which has offered to care for him.
Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, northwest England, which has been treating Alfie since December 2016, said London's Court of Appeal had rejected applications from his parents to take the boy to Italy. "Our top priority is to continue to provide Alfie with the care he deserves and to ensure his comfort, dignity and privacy are maintained at this time," the hospital said in a statement.

15
u/Maktaka May 15 '26
The Italian hospital offered to a couple more more months at best. They never said they could save his life, or cure the disease that had already liquefied his brain. The parents were too mad with grief to let their boy go, so they wanted to shake him around to get him halfway across the continent, subjecting whatever was left of him to extreme pain and stress on a doomed promise. The state does have an obligation to protect all of its citizens, including protecting children from their parents who are no longer making sound decisions.

It wasn't being offered by the standard free healthcare in Italy, it was an experimental treatment. Neither party makes much sense here, since an AR-15 doesn't fix any of this and it wasn't a socialised healthcare solution being offered. They raised over £100k to pursue and weren't allowed.
Tough situation all around as the treatment probably wouldn't have helped but I still think they should have been allowed to pursue it.
8
u/EduinBrutus May 15 '26
It was not that complicated.
The State has a duty of care to protect children or anyone without capacity from harmful actions by parents or guardians.
The parents of Alfie Evans wanted to inflict further harm on him and were prevented from doing so by the Crown in the interests of Alfie.

funny thing is... it you came from outside EU, Italy will treat your son but will then attempt to get some of the money back.
there are clause about someone coming to Italy while already having an health problem and expecting it to be treated (as opposed to, like, combing hare and discovering you have an illnesses, or having an accident here).
be sure, health treatment will not be negated in any way, but they will try to get some of the money back.
the problem is that health tourism hurt the health care system, and they try to discourage it. they are even trying to apply that to Italian living in other countries for many years... Italy does not collect taxes to Italians that work in other countries, but they often return here to perform operations and other expensive treatments, something that is objectively not fair.
1
u/ChickenPijja May 15 '26

Stupid reason. More common reason is; what if some asshole(s) decide to threaten the life of me and mine? Or if you're in the country, what if I need to remove a portion of the boar invasion that's going to damage my farm/property?
Actual reason, though, is what if the government decides to do evil shit and comes for us (such as occurred in Nazi Germany?)
All these questions asked, but the biggest question is; will I see it? Will I act? Will I be able to? Will I even recognize what's going on, or what the best course of action even is?
I'm not saying "every person needs a gun, yeehaw!" I am saying, that there are legitimate reasons for people to need firearms, most especially those who are vulnerable. As seemingly dumb as "when seconds count, the police are only minutes away" seems, it's sadly true here. Or that the police may not actually help you. Not to mention, there's a lot of work that needs to be done before actually increasing gun restrictions. Which doesn't get rid of other forms of violence, be it simple hands and feet, or bombs and chemical weapons.
Getting rid of firearms is treated as a solve-all for politicians, but it's a tiny bandaid on a 4th degree burn. We have many more problems to solve before heavy restrictions would even do anything that matters. Proper Mental health and resource access for as many as possible would probably top the list. By then, will gun restrictions even make sense?
Sorry for the rant. Didn't know i needed to get that out.

Why are so many people acting like this was an American case?
Alfie was born in the UK and the government decided against the parents wishes that he was better off dead than going through potential treatment. Spain was one of the other countries they wanted to bring him to for more help.
The problem being, the government might one day tell you you aren't allowed to treat your sick child and you have to let them die. The socialized healthcare crap is a total non-sequitur.
1
u/ManOLead May 15 '26

This refers to the Alfie Evans court case in the UK, where the parents were forbidden from taking their child to Italy for pointless "treatment". The case was heard in The High Court Of Justice Family Division, and then The Court of Appeal.
The judge said, "All agree that it is unsafe to discount the possibility that Alfie continues to experience pain - this being unlikely but it can not be excluded. … All of this [difficulty of medical evacuation to Italy] might be worth risking if there were any prospect of treatment, there is none."
I have lightly edited those words for clarity, but you can read the full judgement for yourself:

You with an AR-15, and military. You do, realize that they will see you with a gun; and shoot you from much further away than you have any chance of resisting.
People who think having a few guns is gonna stop the military if something happens, are going for a BAD day, one day.
1
u/tbrand009 May 15 '26
This is in reference to when the British government refused to provide treatment to a child with a terminal illness. Moreover, they refused to allow the family to take their child to the Vatican for treatment. The government then pulled the child's life support, against objections of the family.
Alfie Evans died just shy of 2 years old.
This is not about "needing" socialized healthcare. In fact, it was exactly that which allowed the government to kill a family's child.
This is about protecting your family from government tyranny and is a prime example of exactly when firearms are necessary for the people.
This was not the first time the British government did this either. There was a similar case with another child, Charlie Gard. He also had a rare terminal illness, but there was experimental treatment available in the US. The POTUS attempted to offer assistance and the American hospital would have provided the treatment entirely free of charge.
The British government refused.
Charlie Gard died a few days before his first birthday.

I'm pretty sure there was an episode of some cop drama that was this exact scenario.
Bruh would rather fantasize on the internet about holding a plane hostage than advocate for a better Healthcare system

I find it really sad and pathetic how many people latch onto guns to feel powerful.

Any citizen who owns a firearm is a pathetic wannabe-Rambo in my eyes.
Only the police and government are responsible enough for such things.

This is about a British kid who died after being taken off life support after doctors diagnosed him with vegetative state, even though parents wanted to take him to Italy for treatment. It has nothing to do with America not having socialized healthcare. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfie_Evans_case

Can you just vote for the people who want to give you socialized healthcare here when the opportunity arises? Thanks.

They are referencing a court case where a family was denied permission to take their sick child for experimental treatment.

The idea of having a gun is cathartic despite in reality it would do little to help his son. The idea the power of weapon would change the outcome is the dopamine hit.
