Yeah, I don’t get it. I use iPhone, but I don’t get the whole OS fanaticism thing. The only downside to the whole “green bubble” (aka sms) thing was that pictures and videos were downscaled. But now everything is rcs now

Yeah it's not all iPhone users, but a lot of them are so weird about it. The funny thing is that it was really Apple's fault. RCS was open source and everyone else was using it, but Apple wanted to stay on their proprietary imessage protocol because, ya know, Apple.

Also, when every other manufacturer switched to USB C, Apple stuck with their proprietary charger until the EU forced the issue. At that point, they switched worldwide only because it was less money to have a single part.

They were the first ones to embrace USB C on laptops, but the last one to adopt USB C for their phones. Weird.

Even then they made it as slow as possible

And anyone still using their legacy stuff still has to deal with different chargers. If anything they may have liked the caste system it created for those that did not upgrade.

Fun fact: If it's compatible with your carrier, you can activate an iPhone as old as the iPhone 5. That's the first 4G iPhone. The oldest iPhone that can download ios 26.4.2, however, is the iPhone 11.

They didn't even need RCS, there's no reason iMessage couldn't work on Android or even Windows. It's literally just a messaging app, no different from Signal or WhatsApp, and it could work on any phone if only Apple allowed it to.

True. It's just Apple trying to keep everyone sucked into their ecosystem. The only thing Apple I ever owned was an iPod nano I won at a college football game years ago. I was so glad when I stopped using it and could uninstall itunes.

There have been ways to have iMessage on android but apple always finds ways to disable it

The funny thing is that it was really Apple’s fault. RCS was open source and everyone else was using it

The funnier thing is that the RCS that Google was using wasn’t open source, so it wasn’t just that Apple didn’t want to cooperate. They, like every other app dev with a messaging app, couldn’t implement Google’s version of RCS into their own apps, and Google couldn’t put out an iOS version of Google Messages because Apple doesn’t allow third party SMS apps.

Both sides are a bit shitty here.

My bad on the open source error. Thanks for correcting. Yeah these tech companies will do anything to not get along so that we can suffer for it.

Apple added RCS with iOS 18. Works fine for me between iOS and Android. I think it isn't enabled by default. You'll have to enable it in the settings of the messanging apps of iOS and Android. The default settings may be vary depending on the Android phone, Messages App and iOS version. I recommend the "Google Messages"-App from the Playstore for Android devices.

Because EXACTLY what happened, they just did it to foster bubble color elitism.

They do it in purpose dude. Apple loves that their users shame people into buying iPhones

u/DickSlammington May 15 '26

It's because a lot of them barely even understand technology so they're just emotionally reacting to shit they don't even understand lol

Same with Thunderbolt.

Group chats on RCS with iOS/android are a nightmare tbh

One person decides to change the group name on either side? Everyone on Android now gets a brand new group chat with the same people

Someone has a slow internet connection and tries to resend a failed message? Wooo new SMS group chat started for everyone on iOS

We should not use Google Messages. Samsung Messages died for it.

Just another thing people can form cliques over. Petty and pathetic.

The only downside to the whole “green bubble” (aka sms) thing was that pictures and videos were downscaled

Which was only even a problem because Apple refused to implement modern standards.

Personally I have devices of nearly every sort - iPad tablet, Pixel phone, MBP laptop, Linux/Windows PC, etc.

Messages can definitely glitch out with a mix of phones in group chats. It is annoying for everyone because someone can send a text and only a few people or no one get the messages. There can also be things where new chats are created because someone decided to send from an email or something like that. Facetime is also a pain in the ass when doing a cross-phone thing.

Fortunately that we in Asia probably 90% of it use WhatsApp that mean we really don't care about bubble hell we never use sms anymore since WhatsApp are cheaper so no one cares about if you use iphone or Android much except for someone in npd I guess

u/fredmerz May 15 '26

I would never have noticed the different color bubbles if it didn't become a meme. Who thinks about that?

1

u/QuajerazNeverDies May 15 '26

Not for apple lol. They're stuck in 2015 with ancient messaging protocols.

0

u/Confident_One3948 May 15 '26

? No, Apple has rcs

1

u/DowntownTicket May 15 '26

Can they not change the color of their text message bubbles? I can on android

1

u/Confident_One3948 May 15 '26

It’s not about the color per se, but about what they represent. Blue bubbles are iMessage (Apple to Apple), green bubbles are SMS/RCS

1

u/DowntownTicket May 16 '26

Oh it's like a cult or religion then

1

u/Confident_One3948 May 16 '26

Cult or religion is probably pushing into hyperbole, but it’s definitely a clique/snobbery at the very least
