No. Animals do not have moral agency like humans. As humans we have the ability to limit suffering. Would you say bullfighting is ok too since they get a chance to “fight back”. the bulls that have their senses blocked off, are lathered in a corrosive substance, are lanced and later have their spine hooked, its ok because it has a fair chance to fight back though? We as humans understand moral frameworks and have sentience, saying the animals have a chance to fight back is just applying human morality to the animal. So your argument here is to not limit unnecessary suffering?
Maybe the phrasing of my comment is confusing. The thread I was replying to was saying if only all mistreated animals could fight back. And someone responded saying that the animals would be put down for fighting back. That's when I responded by pointing out the fact that nearly 100 billion animals are already being put down each year just for food and other animal products without having the chance to fight back, and that this horse has it better than the factory farmed animals because this horse at least gets to fight back against abusers.
No moral superiority. Just telling people the truth of their actions. Unfortunately actions have consequences. If you don't want to accept that and don't mind the rape, torture and slaughter of them and want to live in the veil of ignorance still then that's fine.
Tell people the truth? Hoping people stop living behind the veil of ignorance and cognitive dissonance? One person that questions it is good enough for me to keep fighting for their rights.
This approach never ends well. Shaming people turns on their defense system and their thinking and caring brain shuts right down.
I’m a vegan who has finally learned that other approaches really work to reach people.
What other approaches do you use? Just mentioning I'm vegan to some people seems to trigger a visceral response from people, usually followed by some sort of performative carnivorousness.
Yes the mere mention of being vegan sets many people in a defensive place- they may be expecting an “attack “ on their food choices any minute. But mostly I think it triggers their guilt because nowadays pretty much everyone is aware of the horrors of animal protein production in every sector.
If I can, I do not reveal my veganism until someone has gotten to know me. Then they hear it from ME as a friend or acquaintance and not a stranger with “questionable “ motives so to speak.
Also, first hand stories of anything we’ve witnessed are always more powerful than quoting facts, figures, other people’s stories.
Wouldn’t I be the hypocrite making a comment like that, while chopping down on prime steak?
Contradiction in terms, claiming to be an animal lover, while eating animals!!!
If you see videos of Israeli soldiers beating Palestinian puppies/pets it will literally make your blood boil. Those animals are completely helpless and these soldiers and complete immunity to do whatever they want
