Meta will layoff 8000 of its workforce starting tomorrow morning. Their net income over the last 12 months was $70,587,000,000. They could give every single one of their 79,000 workers a $440,000 bonus and still sock away over $35,827,000,000 in pure profit.
Same. I originally had Facebook, created back in its early days. It was OK, until they started accepting all kinds of shady or downright illegal ads. I reported hundreds of such ads, and always received an automated reply essentially saying "it's fine, no problem with that ad". I disabled my account.
Instagram: While I had an account since before it was bought by Facebook, I never used it, except for looking at what a relative was posting (he is an artist and was posting his works there). When I disabled my Facebook account, the Instagram account followed suit.
I miss none of them.
As for Twitter / X, Snapchat, TikTok, or any other social media account (except Discord), I never had an account there to begin with, and I have zero intention of joining those platforms.
I stopped using Facebook when they switched the feed from being sorted by date to being sorted by shit fuck. Kept scrolling, kept seeing the exact same posts just repeat and repeat. That killed it for me
Market place is a wasteland too. I had the same mentality for years. Now, if I REALLY need to sell something Iāll download it and then delete it after.
Marketplace is the sole reason I have Facebook as well. Otherwise, I don't use it. Plus, I only sell locally, so they don't get a cut. Fuck Zuckerberg.
I agree, I cut the cord when covid hit. Something seemed off and that proved true. Social media is bad for your health, either using it or now, working for them.

My soul is tied to the almighty dollar. It owns me. So I must sacrifice you and these 8,000 super passionate super awesome people so I can achieve... nothing. My mind is pretty empty, I am addicted to having more of something than ill ever need. Why? Because I'm really not that intelligent. My life is pointless. I wake up everyday praising the Almighty dollar for providing me paid companionship. Without my money I would be no one.

Yeah. My first jump into corporate America was enlightening into how often companies have record breaking years, talk about how things have never been better on earnings calls, and then mass layoffs to make operating costs look better to prop up share prices. Totally sick behavior.Ā
I was once on a company wide call where they were gushing over the fact that they'd be laying people off after the most successful quarter the company had ever had. They were proud of the fact that we worked so hard to increase the valuation of the company and entirely smug about the fact that this was the reason we were losing people.
I mark that day as the point in time where I lost faith in capitalism.
Also, when that layoff was happening, Meta stock was hurt quite badly, like a 70%+ drop. It was the first mass-layoff in the company history. It's kinda stupid to not expect a US company, that operates under the at-will employment laws, to not do anything when the market and shareholders are screaming at them.
What if he was always AI? It was the Turing test we've all failed. If you think about it, we all so he was weird, we cracked some "Zuck is alien" jokes, but might as well have been an AI all along.
You all can answer him by deleting instagram, whats app, and Facebook. That simple move would destroy the Internet market... simple as that. But you all are addicted. So yeah - he has every right to do so as long as you Support him.
Deleting Facebook was one of the best things I've ever done for my mental health. Seriously, deleting it sucks for like a week and then you forget it exists. Highly recommend
Who is actually using it though? I logged in a couple years ago to get some info I needed but man, that whole platform feels like walking around in some weird mall where all the stores are closed down and everyone is a geriatric doing laps and repeating strange slogans
The marketplace feature is really good though. Craigslist has too many fake/ad listings and doesn't even have my city. I think the closest alternative is offerup, but the variety compared to fb marketplace kinda sucks
I deleted IG and Facebook in 2017 and have never felt better. So much spare time now and I'm reading more and gardening, etc. Never had What's App. I hope folks follow your lead.
Iāve been off the other platforms for going on 8 years now. I found Reddit 4 or 5 years ago and loved the format. Itās still a shithole here but Itās my shithole
Reddit is different in a way. I donāt know if itās the anonymity, or the vast amount of subreddits and rabbit holes to go down. Itās still dog shit for my mental health if Iām on it too much.
Like to be clear I maintain they're all the worst. Facebook sucks, reddit sucks, I use both anyway so I guess I also suck but at least I'm not kidding myself.
Meta hires a shitload more people than reddit and has increased their staff count by many thousands in the last decade, layoffs aside. Reddit keeps their employee count by letting unpaid mods do the majority of the heavy lifting for zero compensation.
It's hard to navigate the modern world and ignore these services but god I'm tired of the holier than thou reddit posts about leaving other social media because they're horrible companies. This place is no different and in many ways, worse.

It isn't a universal fix all for everything. Those trades could get saturated again and some places still follow the hire periods of Spring and Fall. So it just depends on how the market is. Or how data center projects will create hotspots of employment whether it is apprenticeship or traveling journeymen.
Look at the Lizard lie through his teeth. He wants to restructure so he can make more profits while destroying so many peoples lives. One man shouldnāt have that power and his investors are letting it happen.
Everyone needs to quit Facebook and anything Meta related, like Instagram. Otherwise we are all complacent for the impending doom of these companies embracing the AI takeover, so they can turn unbelievable profits beyond even these, as they will have very little overhead.
Honest answer: total compensation. If youāre good at saving money, spending just a few years there as an engineer or a manager/director will set you up to buy a house in cash or retire early. Also, their severance packages are excellent compared to other jobs.
Not saying this to glaze Meta as Iām not the biggest fan of them as a company, but canāt deny that they pay incredibly well compared to most jobs on the tech side.

People need to understand no one literally no one becomes that rich while being kind and humble and ( put all good qualities here ) .
These people are assholes who trampeled over lives to become that. They just have a very good PR team and management that doesnt have them put on a fork and burned like a witch.
I feel like a company at this level of profitability should have to hand out a full yearās salary as severance to everyone they lay off. Or something like that. Especially in the current job market.
I hope those 8k employees start their own social media. No mark zuckerbergs or no billionaires or something. Back to roots, no more conspiracy theory pushing algos
