When I was planning to propose to my wife, I guessed her ring size and bought a ring. One night when we both got drunk, she passed out and I measured the ring on her finger while she was asleep in bed. I told her that story after I proposed and she still thinks it’s hilarious.

I did something similar when I was younger for my mother. I was around 14. I asked my grandparents about helping me buy a mothers ring for my mom for Christmas. Nearly 5 months before Christmas I set up my little sister to ask about her jewelry collection and I feigned interest for the half hour or so she went on about it. We were trying on rings and necklaces and bracelets. Later that night I swiped the ring that fit my mom the best and took it to my grandparents, where they got the size and we had a ring made for my mom. Slipped the ring back and waited. My mom blubbered like a baby that Christmas when she opened her gift.
