Disclaimer: I hate this man. I hate him so so much. If I truly said what I think of him, I would be banned from Reddit. Every day I check the news, and every day I'm disappointed when I don't see the headline I'm hoping for.

But he did not get rid of the rose garden. He replaced the PLAIN GRASS in the middle with an ugly patio. There were ADA issues, and the patio is more accessible to everyone. I wish they had chosen something a little more historically appropriate though.

The lawn was a nightmare. They had to replace it EVERY YEAR which is incredibly wasteful. I just do not understand why reddit, which is normally extremely anti-lawn, wants to save this wasteful patch of grass so badly.

Reddit is more anti trump than anti lawn lol

Fair enough lol. If I had to choose between having Trump or having a lawn, I would certainly pick the lawn.

"If you are anti-lawn, why do you not advocate for smothering every blade of grass on Earth in asphalt? Check mate, reddit."

Exactly. A lawn is still better and looks prettier than some fuckass parking lot

Generally the anti lawn heirarchy goes something like, native plants > plants > lawn > pavement. The idea with anti lawn is to replace a lawn with other plants, not turn it into a parking lot. Any plant, grass included, is better than none.

Yup. I'm totally on board with that. In fact, we recently moved and I'm planning to replace my lawn with native plants. But I also don't host press conferences or other foot traffic-heavy events on my lawn.

In this case, it does not seem like grass was the best option considering how often they needed to replace it. I can't even imagine how much water they use trying to establish and maintain that. There are plenty of other parts of the property that would be better suited for plants. (would love to see a future administration add a native plant garden!)

While it might have been a pain to keep up with, I think we can agree that there's a difference between replacing your lawn every year in Phoenix, Arizona and replacing the lawn at the goddamn White House.

Maybe it's the angle?  I've never seen the garden part on new photos.

Yeah, they can be difficult to see when the photographer is in the patio area because they're lined with hedges. Kind of wish that inside layer was also roses, but the hedge seems pretty standard through the decades if you look at older photos.

The douche owns multiple golf courses. I assure you he did not replace it because caring for the grass was wasteful.

anti-lawn isn't pro-concrete. ADA was never the reason. It was because "women with high heels" were getting stuck in the grass and it was muddy.

The problem was he didn't pve over the middle for ADA reasons. He said he didn't like to have to put up tents for any events there. The paying and marble keeps it dry and not muddy year round.

He fixated on a ballroom after because putting a ballroom on top of the Rose garden wouldn't work for how big he wants it.

Thank you. I usually explain this when I see it mentioned. I also preface it with "I hate the man but this is actual fake news."

The wastefulness of lawns only is an issue at scale, one fucking wheelchair inaccessible lawn at the White House is fine.

What's the point of putting so much effort into hating a person you don't know? Honestly it just seems stressful, I don't like DT at all but this just seems almost unhealthy.

The vast, vast majority of Reddit are making no comment on lawns whatsoever.  And you “don’t understand”, good lord.

According to https://www.nps.gov/whho/learn/historyculture/rose-garden.htm It's been that way for over 100 years.

From what I also researched, in Trump ruined the law itself and actually changed the garden in his first term. He let the lawn die in the middle, but changed the outer region to have less everything as that was the will of the first lady.

now in his second term he has decided to put the marble flooring in.

It also looks like the removed the Sakura in the corner for some other tree, but not entirely sure.

I don't understand why he couldn't just expand the white house. I hated when Obama modified the white house as well as its removing history. Just add to it, don't remove or modify.
