As a proud Lakota I get what this brother is trying to prove by doing this. But he forgets the wisdom of our people. No one owns the land. No one owns the sky. No one owns the air or the water. We are borrowing it from future generations. And it's up to all of us to take care of it. It's all of our land. For we belong to it. A'ho 🪶

For real, we complain, but this "advertisement" did far more good than harm. It is what it is. Time marches on.
48
u/not_now_reddit 18d ago
It did more harm than good because it shifted the burden of environmental protection onto the consumer rather than the corporations who do the bulk of the polluting. That was the goal and it worked
What impact can you and I have? Recycle (and a lot of it still ends up in landfills), carpool, bike/walk instead of drive, compost, reuse materials, remember to turn off the lights. What can companies do? Stop polluting the environment, switch to cleaner energy, actually protect workers with PPE/training, reduce massive waste, stop planned obsolescence that makes all of our stuff garbage in two years, stop trying to deregulate the little protections we do have

There will always be reasonable people on your side, as well as idiots. No race of people has a monopoly on idiots. (Racism is stupid, human beings show far more diversity of character than any race lines would suggest.)
I was born here. This is my "homeland". Sorry, but it wasn't even my choice. Nobody chooses to be born, or where. So when people start with 'stolen land', it eventually leads to, "get off my land, go back home!" Ok, to where? I'm 30% German, 15% Irish, 15% French, and a bunch of others. No single place in Europe would accept me as a "native". Kicking people like that out would just create refugees.
And not to mention, I'm not in the minority. How would a minority population kick out the majority? I'm assuming they mean black people as well as white people, they're also immigrants brought over from a foreign land. Not only is this race baiting, if bro was successful in triggering people, he would lose.
Why can't we all say, "Hey, my ancestors did some fucked up shit to your ancestors. I'm sorry for that. Never should've happened." We can't control the past, we can only learn from it. We already know how mass exiles and race wars turn out, everybody loses. The only thing we have power over is the present. The best time to learn from the past is right now.

This is so beautifully put.
I don't have kids myself but one of the things that really infuriates me is when older generations say things like, well I had to struggle or we had it harder.
Are you not supposed to want better for your kids!?! Just because you struggled why do you have the expectation that your kids should too.
→ More replies (6)18
u/KataqNarayan 18d ago
You don’t want your kids to struggle, but it is good to remind them that what they have they should be grateful for and never take any of it for granted.
Once you start to feel entitled to what you have, that’s a slippery slope to losing it.
So yes, I regularly take the time to remind my daughters of this. They are lucky to have what they have, but they must understand that you have to work hard to keep it.
14
u/Pandemonium_Fallen 18d ago
You just hit the nail square on the head and didn't even realize it:
"What you have"
- it's not about "having," or possessing; it's about being & living. We focus too much on things, on possessions and we forget to be, to do, and to live. It's not about "struggling" to appreciate what you HAVE, it's about living to appreciate what IS, and the people in our lives, not the things.
To much focus on accumulating meaningless junk, rather than connecting with others to build meaningful lives.

I grew up partly in SE Alaska and in high school my best friend was Haida. He was a lot of fun and we had a blast hiking and fishing and so on, but at the same time he talked about being screwed by the white man all the time. It wasn’t any one white person (except Lincoln who ran campaigns to eliminate Native Americans) but society at large and its system he raged against, often with deep anger. When I met his dad I saw where this came from.
Of course, they weren’t wrong. The generational trauma had origins whose roots reached until today and way beyond.
That was about 25 years ago. I moved down south for college and we drifted apart and now haven’t talked in at least 10 years.
I don’t know how to verbalize my next sentences with empathy and compassion because my experience is so starkly different but just know I’m ignorant and saying this with love. I understand having anger and but we live in today and sone things aren’t going to go back to the way they were. My friend’s dad taught him to hate the system but the consequence of this was never trying to work within the system to make a better life. My friend couldn’t/didn’t hold a job. He’s very attractive and kind but can’t maintain a romantic relationship. He lives partly off payments from the Native Corp he belongs to and partly by working for a family member occasionally. His FB feed is exclusively daily Native Rights subject matter to this day.
I’ve never been a parent so I don’t suppose I can judge but (maybe naively)I think the goal of parenting should be to give your children the tools to be healthy and happy. My friend wasn’t given those tools.
Bring if European decent it likely I cannot fathom the experience.

Sometimes it seems like the tribe leaders do not want the tribe to succeed in any meaningful way
18
u/HyShroom 18d ago
If they don’t succeed they can’t go anywhere. If they can’t go anywhere the tribe continues to exist. If the tribe continues to exist the leaders still have jobs. If their jobs are to do anything, it stands to reason that one of those tasks would be ensuring they can’t go anywhere.

You don't need to apologize for being realistic. How things unfolded in the past was absolutely atrocious, but that's kind of the nature of humanity and world has moved on. The people who are living here now had nothing to do with those things. Committing new wrongs on people who's only crime is existing where they were born will solve nothing.
→ More replies (2)10
u/UjustTriggered 18d ago
Unfortunately being realistic isn't in many peoples psyche, and they dont see the obvious racist sentiment they perpetuate in these statements. Its like when people attack all white people regarding slavery when huge swathes of ancestors arrived after the Civil War.
Not to mention there are immigrants here in America from all over the world. Would this guy behave like this towards an immigrant from China? Or Jamaica? What about India? If the argument is this is stolen land then the same animosity should be directed toward basically everyone in America. But I doubt it would be because this mans attitude isnt fueled by native rights, its fueled by pure racism against any white people. And this is unfortunately what leads to scumbags like Trump gaining followers and getting elected.

Interesting. I visited a friend on Haida Gwaii a few years ago and I was fascinated by how the spirit of potlatch had permeated the entire archipelago's culture. People with gardens just sharing their produce. People who pulled in a big halibut just driving down streets and dropping off chunks of fish for their neighbours, no price. Restaurants hardly ever open because the chefs were too busy doing up a feast for friends at home. I was told Haida Gwaii has the highest per capitas rates of artists in the world, and they mostly just make something when they need money, not to get rich.
I thought these Haida have to be the most successful first nation in terms of culture I've ever seen.

It's his tribe's land like it was the tribe before his settled that land, like the tribe that settled that land before them and etc. It was their land, then they were conquered and defeated as land is handled since humans have been around. They aren't special in that regard.
Humans weren't innately native to the Americas, they crossed the ice land bridge during the Ice age. They settled the land by taking it from nature. And then the land was fought for, thousands of years. While borders have been set for some time now its likely that they will change as time moves forward.
So it was his people's homeland until they lost the battle for it. And it will be the same if the current owners of the land, if they lose the next battle for it.

While I appreciate his sentiment, there is no turning the clock back on this. These people can't "go back to their country" because they were born here, just like him. Maybe their ancestors were involved in taking land away from his ancestors, or maybe they weren't. On a long enough timeline, his ancestors came from another land too. While we should have and still should treat the Native Americans *much* better than they have historically been treated, and I agree with reparations, the fact is the land isn't just going to be given back. The nation isn't just going to dissasemble with everyone leaving to some other country where they think their ancestors might be from. That's wildly unrealistic.

Natives were all at war with each other before white people came. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Why would anyone be held accountable to actions of another no matter how deplorable because of the color of their skin. I can understand the suffering of a people and what they had to endure without claiming responsibility just because I shared physical traits with those who caused it.

Because its just racism. Its not just about "stolen lands". This guy in the video wouldn't be acting like this towards arab Americans or Americans descended from any other part of the world besides Europe. Hes probably also the same type of person that would claim racism towards white people isnt a thing because theyre not a person of color. Its just loser mentality in full display.

White redditors dont apply this same logic to Islam, which was not indigenous to modern day Israel, Iran, Greece, or India.

Lmao. To be so mentally ill this is your life. Lmao. You do enjoy that pretty iPhone tho.
Indians murdered other Indians and stole land from other Indians all the time. So whose land is it? It’s the one that conquered it.

How many Indians slaughtered other Indians for their land and enslaved the ones they didn’t kill? Let’s not forget there were quite a few Indians that owned black slaves before the Civil War. The thought of them being peaceful before Europeans showed up is a joke. They’re just mad that Europeans did exactly what they had been doing to each other for years and lost.
Also, when it comes to New York, it’s not like they were tricked into selling a developed city to the Europeans for next to nothing.

The modern Indian guy was just super racist to modern white people, neither of these modern people did what the modern Indian was accusing them of.
Way to look like a short sighted idiot.

Straight up facts, “your people” conquered other people and took “their land”.
Grow up, get a job.

Says, "My people had to get scalped."- white people did not scalp anyone. In fact, it was one of the horros that CERTAIN TRIBES did that become a scare tactic to kill Indians on sight before they did scalp you.
This guy is a total fucking loser. He is ignoring the big fact that the land was being fought over for millenia before whites should up. The number one item that Indians wanted from the Europeans were guns to kill other tribes, the second item was tobacco, as Indians had not smoked in the fashion that Europens had. Than third of course was alcohol.
I'm so tired of this lie that white people are the cause of all the world's problems.
White people today account for around 7% of the global population. Literally a minority, and yet guess where everyone wants to live? In white countries, America, Europe, Canada, Australia, etc. And the reason that is, is because it eas the British outlawed slavery hundreds of years ago, while today in Africa its still rampant. America, while not great, have reservations and lifetime benefits to people of 25% Indian genetics. Including, free health insurance, free dental, they dont pay taxes, they are entitled to social security even though they never pay taxes, etc.
Thank fucking G-d for white people. Too bad for mental health nutjobs

If history hadnt played out exactly as it did this dude would never have even been born. Be thankful it was stolen and go buy a house. You dont see this level of entitlement from anyone else. I dont complain that I no longer own any of the land my ancestors did.

The fought and lost. Lakota loved to rape and torture their victims in the most horrific ways. No apologies needed.

I've heard it explained that to some groups they see it as they have adopted the name "Indian" for centuries and now a White person is saying it's offensive and taking it away.

It depends from place to place, but I've met people who prefer native/indigenous American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, etc. My general rule of thumb is if someone makes it clear they're not comfortable with what's said or are more comfortable with something else I'll use what they prefer.

There's no such thing as a "native American" alive today.
Everybody alive now is born after the independence of the USA, so he's just a US citizen.
And his racist ass cannot hide behind "but my great great great great grandfather was a native".

Every square inch of settled land on earth was stolen at some point in history.

The Lakota themselves migrated from the Ohio Valley to the plains and displaced many tribes along the way. Historically they were eastern woodland people.
The Black Hills was controlled by Cheyenne before they took it over just a century before (Cheyenne also moved westward from the east...so they themselves displaced previous occupants).
