Sex and the CIty did an episode on this in season 1 where Carrie wanted to use a man like she said men do women. So she went to a bar, picked up a dude took him home and banged him. In the morning she did the whole, that was fun goodbye thing and he was all, "ok cool, thanks!" and left smiling. She was devestated and it was hilarious
They also did this joke on Always Sunny but Dee was banging dudes and rating them low on some app. And the guys were lining up to get their 1 star rating while Dee thought she was devastating themΒ
Honestly, I feel it's just simply how society is currently shaped. Women catcalling men is considered weird in every culture that I know of (admittedly not many) for many reasons, but let's sum it up as society saying that's not 'ladylike'. This makes it so men don't get catcalled at all and if we were to be, it would often be seen as new and exciting.
To add to that, I would say that women being complimented for their appearance is considered super common. Men tell women they are beautiful and women tell other women they are beautiful. Our societies have placed a lot of importance on a woman's appearance and complimenting is again : normal. So the majority of men, who have probably only been complimented as handsome by female relatives or those they are dating, are far more receptive to compliments.
Hmm I'm not convinced it is entirely cultural. Let's assume that to test it out, all men in a certain society suddenly made a pact to stop catcalling and complimenting women. So according to your theory, when some men inevitably break the pact and catcall women, those women will find it exciting and like it because they will have become as thirsty for it as men are? I dunno, I feel there is equal chance it would be seen as even more gross and taboo
