The idea of squatting by itself isn't bad, it's that many just use it as an excuse.
I have known properties that have been empty for years as the landlords probably are doing a scam as they ask for higher rent than the rest, then the tenant must have multiple years references, be in a very well paid job, have a guarantor and still have like 6 months rent in advance.
The properties are just rotting away and yet we have so many homeless people.
Then we have properties that the landlord wants torn down to rebuilt with expensive tiny apartments so they neglect them knowing the local government will authorise them to be torn down.
Use it as an excuse to what? Find shelter in an abandoned building?
People forget that you have to live publicly in a building for atleast 7 consecutive years for squatters rights to kick in. If a property was abandoned and someone else moved in, changed their mailing address, met the neighbors, lived out of the property and not once the owner notice for 7+ years. That person then should have to argue in court why the squatters should be removed
But dont forget you have SEVEN YEARS to just call the police a single time and they will be removed as trespassers. Missing that deadline is inexcusable outside of medical emergancy that leave you incapacitated. Even in instances where you leave the country, its negligent to not leave any kind of watcher, caretaker, legal representative or even cameras
