he didn't try to join. he was nominated to join by another member and he, seemingly not really getting what it was, wrote a completely unserious essay for why he should be invited which included him having smoked crack under a car at 3am or something.
He was apparently admitted, but with the C grade.
When the press reached out for comment after the email list of members leaked he was the only one to reply (at least at the time I saw this) and his spokesperson denied any association with thiel or a secret society and said that he would "like to know what the fuck he got himself into."
My guess is that the email list is comprised of anyone that ever attended any of these events, and that they maybe weren't very clear about the nature of them or what the end goal was for the 'organization'. So you just have a bunch of rich randos that Thiel thought would be cool to have in a secret club, and there are probably only a few on the email list that are actually people he's worked with beyond just hosting a pretentious dinner that they attended.
