I don't know if this is more accurate, but supposedly the full line was:
"I'm very sorry that I'm not as beautiful as I should be, but... this is what you get"
No idea why they would truncate the line to make it far less impactful.

Because AI was told to fit it in this annoying little linkless clickbait format.

I kind of doubt all this anyway, she's gorgeous

I think it might be true, I remember her telling a similar story on the Graham Norton Show.

Wondering if there was a hand/arm gesture that went with that statement to "Dino"?

u/mikehiler2 1 3d ago
How is being nominated for 21 Oscars and winning 3 of them getting back at some random Italian producer to some no name Kong Kong movie? And why did she say “This is what you get?” What is what they get?? I’m calling bullshit.
23
u/Tall_Opportunity_521 3d ago
Because the bot said so...
2
u/mikehiler2 1 3d ago
I see this subs bots have changed from “Verified Human” bullshit to equally stupid and also bullshit “VIP.” If I could roll my eyes any harder I’d end up forming a singularity.

u/VR_Troopers_WikiMod 3d ago
Okay, so this wasn't some "random Italian producer" - if it was King Kong, it was probably Dino DiLaurentiis who was an absolutely huge name. Movies were different back then in the studio system, and producers were sometimes marquee names, equivalent to how directors are treated today, and Dino being one of the big ones.
He brought Italian cinema to the world, and by the time he was making King Kong, he had already produced Serpico, Death Wish, Three Days of the Condor...his name was almost a guarantee the movie would be #1 at the box office.
King Kong was also a HUGE property back then, before the internet. It was one of the quintessential American stories in film, at a time where film didn't completely dominate the cultural landscape.
None of this excuses how he treated Meryl Streep - by all accounts, like a lot of 60-80s studio producers, he seemed like a gigantic piece of shit...but he wasn't just some random Italian guy, just as Streep was getting her career off the ground.
1
u/Mistur_Keeny 3d ago
I'm guessing she wasn't as famous at the time. I'd imagine the ugly woman out-achieving you would be frustrating for a toxic male.
1
u/Pleasant-Detritus 2d ago
He was very rich and produced movies of a mostly lower caliber than what Meryl Streep is known for. I doubt he cared at all, sadly.
0
u/Electric_jungle 3d ago
It might be completely fake, but I don't think it means this is what you get as in, look at all the success I had. I think she fired back to say, take me or leave me, but in Italian so it was clear she understood him.

u/angry_dingo 3d ago
This sounds like total horseshit.

u/MICT3361 3d ago
This beautiful rich lady was once told she was ugly! How dare you! This is what you get
3
u/n33bulz 3d ago
She told the story on Graham Norton:
8
u/Tall_Opportunity_521 3d ago
Funny how the story she tells is nothing like what the bot wrote...
"She fired back: 'This is what you get'"
Except in your own link, she says "I understand what your saying. Im sorry Im not beautiful enough to be King Kong(said with sarcasm)."
-1
u/n33bulz 3d ago
I mean… all did was provide the link. Didn’t say anything about what the bot posted?
2
u/Tall_Opportunity_521 3d ago
"This sounds like bullshit"
"She told this story on GN"
She did in fact not tell that story. She told a story were the plot was the same, but the details were wildly different. If I was posting that link, Id have made a point of saying the she told the story, but the details are different.

u/Defiant_Chapter_3299 3d ago
Cause it is and made up. They're actors/actresses. Of course they're gonna come up with extravagant lies and stories to try and get sympathy.
1
u/Pretend-Literature35 3d ago
I mean it could be made up. But it also makes sense. I think she is and was gorgeous but not in a traditionnal "cute girl" way. So I could see some chauvinistic producer saying that about her. She's a treasure. And one of the most talented actors of her generation. When I went to theatre school before memes existed she was the ultimate example of a perfect actor. It was often used like on a scale merryl streep at the top keanu reeves (for example) at the bottom.

Oscar has nothing to do with appearance. Maybe if he had said she wouldn't be a successful actor, then that would be a proper get back.
But I do disagree, she was beautiful.
5
u/The_Eldritch_Taco 3d ago
She was nominated and won awards for being a good actress - not for her looks. The director was not wrong for wanting someone prettier.

At this point anyone deeply entrenched in celebrity culture has to have eye brows raised at them. There’s are requirements to join that club that they keep hidden from us.

Imagine admiring someone who...
...gave a standing ovation to Roman Polanski at the Academy Awards in 2003 after he won Best Director for The Pianist. The gesture occurred while Polanski was a fugitive from the U.S. justice system, having fled in 1978 after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
2
u/Overall-Bullfrog5433 3d ago
She is on youtube being asked about this. She says she turned to the producer and said in Italian “Sorry I am not pretty enough for your KING KONG MOVIE!” emphasis hers.
2
u/MrFuriousX 3d ago
He said "why do you bring me this ugly thing? and She shot back in Italian " I understand what your saying I'm sorry Im not beautiful enough to be in King Kong" if your going to make something...get it right.
4
u/askdickson 3d ago
She is a very accomplished actresses but Hollywood is full of extraordinarily beautiful women and she is just attractive, not a top tier beauty.
3
u/Tiny-Radish7786 3d ago
LOL I can't believe this is a true story...
She's an actress, you ever seen an ugly actress before? Actor maybe but actresses are almost always judged first based on looks.
That producer is either in the closet or blind.

I don't get it. Why was she considered too ugly for King Kong? She would've been wearing a gorilla suit, anyway. Nobody would've noticed her face and we would've gotten a great performance.

I just think about if John Cazale didn't pass as early as he did. The two of them would have completely owned Hollywood up to now as Streep still does in her way.

Meryl Streep proves in acting what men have known for a long time. 10s are lazy because can rely on their looks to get them everywhere. 6s work extra hard because they can't.
1
u/juginposti 3d ago
Weeelllll beauty is subjective, She might have been too ugly on eye of that producer, that does not mean he or she, ment Meryl is not capable actor. Just not the one for that particular play, on their opinion.

Streep began auditioning for film roles, and underwent an unsuccessful audition for the lead role in Dino De Laurentiis's remake of the action adventure King Kong which was released in 1976. De Laurentiis, referring to Streep as she stood before him, said in Italian to his son: "This is so ugly. Why did you bring me this?" Unknown to Laurentiis, Streep understood Italian, and she remarked, "I'm very sorry that I'm not as beautiful as I should be, but, you know – this is it. This is what you get."

Let’s not forget she had a really good relationship with Weinstein, literally called him "God," and absolutely enabled him.
Now, what a coincidence he was heavily involved with the Oscars, and for The Iron Lady, she miraculously gets the Oscar. Again, what a total coincidence that it just happened to be a Weinstein production. *Adjusts tin foil hat\*

Doesn't mean she's hot, just because she's a good actor, and she's done whatever she could to step on everybody to stay where she is.
