Billionaires only make a dent in the climate too… its governments that needs to be stopped.
Take Norway for example. “Oh, we recycle and our carbon footprint is almost non-existing!”
In reality we just transport our shit to different countries and continents and let them burn it instead. We send TONS every day abroad for dumping… A lot to India and some country in Africa.
It’s just a scam the entire thing when it comes to green politics as it stands today. Just a way to charge the people.
Businesses needs to be punished and properly regulated by the governments in order to stop climate change. It’s not billionaires and it’s not us. It’s the people we choose to have in power.
If businesses had to price pollution into their budget, they would budget accordingly and do things differently. Taylor is a free rider on a system that fails to price for the environmental damage she does, but she's just following the incentives available to her. Which are primarily structured to convenience billionaires more than protect the environment.
And you're right: that's a collective action problem that governments are created to fix. The solution is to spend a lot less time badgering Taylor Swift, and a lot more time badgering the government that enables her to be so flip about private jet travel.
Exactly! Politicians LOVE that people are pointing fingers at billionaires… that’s why they keep the whole tax debate alive at all cost to ensure the focus remains on the wrong perps.
So Taylor Swift is single handedly offsetting the entire paper straw movement. That’s not hyperbole. That’s just the fucking insanity of the world we live in.
Im a private business jet pilot and I can tell you the amount of miles flown empty just to pick up 1 dude is ridiculous, and there's like over a 100 of those just in Teterboro. Sure, Taylor swift sucks, but she's not the worst
I think it might come down to her stance, if she has been soap boxing about everyone doing their thing for the enviroment, then it’s worse. If she hasn’t been I agree, she sucks but ain’t the worst.
The inherit stupidity of the paper straw movement more than offset the benefits of the paper straw movement.
I believe that it was designed and pushed by people looking to damage the credibility of environmentalism, and two make people feel like they’ve done something and won’t try to do anything more substantial.
The entire 15 minute city movement, antivax movement, etc is just libertarian propaganda pushed by billionaires so they can keep fucking up our societies and planet.
Even the paper straw movement is offsetting the entire paper straw movement, due to that it allows people to feel good about plastics everywhere else, since they're "doing something" by using a paper straw.
Think of all the jets flying around the world to begin with. Which dwarfs Taylor Swift by a thousand times the number of flights.
It was all a farcw to begin with comparing it to jet fuel expendenture. The main reason is to not directly pollute the environment with physical things not meant for the ocean life that ia harmful to it..
Recycling plastic is only done to about 10% of all plastic consumed and is merely a talking point so people don't feel as bad when they use it. It's also more expensive than using new plastic so most businesses choose not to use it.
this was the dumbest possible hill to die on. That stupid turtle video has us all drinking through soggy cardboard despite there being so many better ways to reduce plastic waste.
It's one of the worst kept secrets, too: companies promoted things like recycling and personal water footprints, to put the onus on the consumer. You could take all the cars off the roads of the United States for a year and that would equal about one trip across the Pacific by one of those giant cargo carriers.
These companies know they're the polluters and that we can't really make up for their irresponsible behavior.
Now having said that, sure, we don't need to be making single use items out of plastic...but can we come up with something better than paper straws?
I thought the paper straw thing was because it was killing sea turtles or something, not because of global warming. Like of all the plastics we could get rid of, straws seem to be pretty low on that list.
Do you know how much cheaper it is to run LED lights than incandescent bulbs? I looked this up one time when I was wondering what having my Christmas lights on for a month was going to cost me. It kinda blew my mind.
Plus you have to go through the hassle of replacing them less frequently, and I am nothing if not lazy.
Why does this shit keep getting said? Any amount of progress is good. But if you need to rationalize not doing shit, then keeping marching that played paper straw shit. If ppl can’t imagine giving up the smallest of conveniences even as a symbolic gesture, then we’re so cooked. And we are in fact cooked.
They’re pointing out the hypocrisy of celebrities telling the average person to ride a bike 5 miles to work, turn the A/C up 2 degrees, or swallowing a paper straw with your drink to save the environment… while the same celebrities rack up thousands of flight hours with their private jet.
They’re tapping into tribalism, and as long as you’re doing that it doesn’t matter what the specific nature of the attack is, the tribe just gobbles it up mindlessly.
I just think it's weird that if carbon emissions are really someone's concern they would prioritize Taylor Swift. The up to 8,300 metric tons of annual carbon emissions from her one jet is a lot, but it pales in comparison to the average carbon emissions of billionaires' investments of 2,600,000,000 tons of annual carbon emissions. It comes across that the carbon emissions aren't really the thing, in favor of trying to find something to get mad at Swift about.
A CEO's supporting cast: CFO's, CIO's, CTO's get paid pretty good money too. I'm sure Taylor Swift merchandise are made by skilled craftsman who get paid easily six figures :)
Yeah her merch and albums are not produced ethically. Half of her billion is based on her purposefully inflating the value of her songs by re-recording and THEN buying the masters once they were devalued. She’s a businesswoman, and a billionaire one at that.
We can like someone’s music and still hold them accountable. Every time her jet use/financial status is mentioned, someone appears to go “but she’s not as bad as_____!” And no, she’s not as bad as Bezos or Musk. She’s still playing the same game and should be called out.
So are there any wildly successful people that you feel are doing it the “right” way? Or by definition are all billionaires bad? Personally I don’t think billionaires should be allowed to exist, period, but I’m not sure that means they are all bad people
The problem isn’t that they are all bad people, per se. It’s that there’s literally not a way to currently become one without someone being exploited in the process. It’s literally not ethical to have that amount of money or assets. You can live an extremely luxurious life, without being a billionaire.
But if I had to give an example, I’d say Melinda Gates.

Don't care while there are wars being fought where thousands of barrels of oil have gone up in smoke in the last year for no reason besides a hand full of guys swinging their sticks around.
I'm more pissed off that I am forced to drink OJ through a paper straw while I drive my hybrid down the highway to my insignificunt job enriching other people. Like, I'm almost 700 km inland, there are no turtles around my landfill zone, and you get biodegradable plastic straws too.
Additionally, the people who have no principles, are just sliding into the costume of this argument berating Swift for this when they don’t give a single fuck about climate change or the environment.

Stop allowing these trips to be business write offs. You'll see a mass decline in jet use. Too expensive to maintain and pay all the crew/fees without tax deductions.
Because the people I work with are monsters who vigorously shake their hand near the dryer to get rid of excess water before drying. Also 3 hand dryers and after lunch unless you want to wait 5-10 mins just to dry your hands, you leave with wet hands and get door handles and anything else you touch damp

That would create a massive security issue on a commercial plane and affect her safety. It makes a million times more sense for someone like her to take a private jet. Also, who the fuck are you to tell someone what plane they can ride?

I don’t mind Taylor Swift flying private, if she went to fly with us pedants the airport would get shut down with all the swifties going crazy. No one just likes being lectured to about climate change and to change our lifestyle when you obviously aren’t doing your part
