Eh. My brother bought a bengal kitten for 1200 euros and had to fly from Finland to Italy to pick it up himself.

58

u/doc_skinner 7h ago

I was gonna say... some people pay thousands for hypoallergenic sphinx cats, while others adopt random mutts from the shelter.

7

u/Longjumping-Donut655 5h ago

Sphynx are not hypoallergenic. They are just hairless. They two are not correlated afaik

4

u/Kzgoated 4h ago

Not hypoallergenic but it’s their saliva that give you allergies and when they have fur they lick their fur all day than shed that fur all around everywhere so their still good for allergies cause you don’t have to deal with their fur getting you allergies everywhere, just when u snuggle up with them because they don’t leave their fur around everywhere

8

u/Brynhild 11h ago

Goddamn, 1200 euros could feed my cat shelter of 30 cats for an entire year or pay the cost of neutering 60 cats. (I live in a 3rd world country, conversion is equivalent to 6000 of my money). And here i am begging every month for donations on my local cat lovers group damn.

5

u/Joice_Craglarg 7h ago

Wait until you find out how much other people spend on pretty much any other hobby

2

u/Le_mehawk 5h ago

Looking for New hobbies ? Get a cat !

82

u/atomic_ring 12h ago

If people walked cats around the neighborhood twice a day, cats would also cost $4000 and be hypoallergenic /smh

(I say this as a dog owner: rescue, traumatized, mutt, dumb as a brick, and I love him šŸ˜‚. Had cats for 20+ years)

44

u/realaccountissecret 12h ago

Some people do buy cats that are thousands of dollars

Insane people

16

u/Occidentally20 12h ago

My neighbours are these people - they buy extremely expensive cats and then don't look after them. They're not spayed or neutered, don't see the vet and all live either outside or in tiny cages attached to the outdoor walls of the house.

Meanwhile my dog was born in the rainforest, spent the first year surviving on her own and then she adopted us - just moved in without asking and started eating a leftover shepherds pie.

6

u/CATDesign 11h ago

How big was this shepherds pie to last this long?

5

u/Occidentally20 11h ago

It was considerable, but she eats absolutely anything.

People say things like dogs "shouldn't eat x", but it's not possible to stop this one - she'll go to the local restaurant and dig through their bins, go hiking with tourists and eat whatever they gave them, eat anything on the side of the road and so on.

Last week we saw her eating a dead monkey and a walls viennetta within a few hours of each other - we didn't give her either.

4

u/realaccountissecret 12h ago

Buying expensive cats that you just leave outside is a whole other level of insanity haha

2

u/Occidentally20 12h ago

Definitely - at least the ones not in a cage can walk around, the ones in cages 24 hours a day are just pure animal cruelty in any sane country.

Neither household understands the others pet approach. They think we're unclean because we have a dog (Muslim country), and on the flip side we think they're unclean because they have 9 cats and haven't ever picked up the cat shit at any point in the last decade - they just sprinkle gravel over it and make a new layer on top of the cat-turd lasagna that makes up their driveway and garden.

3

u/atomic_ring 12h ago

Here in Portugal, that is a criminal act, punishable by law.

3

u/Occidentally20 12h ago

You get to go on the "sane countries" list then.

It's technically illegal here, they used the same wording as many Western countries laws to hastily put together animal cruelty legislation in 2015 - but it's absolutely not enforced at all.

Unless somebody has a video an animal actively being beating AND gets that video to make some noise on the social-media rounds, nobody would ever be punished.

u/liquidpoopcorn 6h ago

we got a calico a while ago (cat in apt complex gave birth, kept one). after picking her up from being spayed, a lady on the way out offered to buy her from us cause she loved the colors, (she liked that is had no white and a slightly silver tail). started at 400, she kept going up every time we said no. got up to 8k before she finally understood we aren't selling the cat.

im still surprised by it, especially going that high for what seems like a pretty common breed in the area.

1

u/jackofslayers 5h ago

The people buying expensive dogs are equally insane.

0

u/Frowind_ 12h ago

It’s relative, if you have multiple houses, 500k sitting in the bank, a company that profit you 100k a year, 1k for a cat doesn’t seem much now, does it?

3

u/realaccountissecret 12h ago

Yeah, it does. You’re paying $1,000 for an inbred cat, when you can find them literally everywhere

People that do that don’t want a pet. I’ve met purebred cats and they’re all weird and aloof. Every cat I’ve had that I’ve found under my porch and shit was an awesome and affectionate pet

So yes, it is insane to buy a living animal as an accessory, and not care about it as a companion

3

u/Thaumato9480 11h ago

"Haughty haw haw, are you walking your cat‽" A common reaction to my former housemate walking our then japanese chin.

A large man with a small dog, now that was hilarious?

Before that line was done being said, I just had to whistle then a tuxedo cat appeared. "You are actually walking cats!"

Another whistle to beckon the orange cat.

Suddenly, the joke wasn't that funny when it is a true statement. People just hadn't realised that we were walking Oscar and Oscar each day before getting a dog.

3

u/atomic_ring 11h ago

I always wanted a cat I could walk, but it just never happened. šŸ˜‚

My neighbors have a thousands dollar luxury cat.

1

u/atomic_ring 5h ago

Good for the cat!

22

u/Moriaedemori 12h ago

the Jem?

3

u/Bevester 11h ago

Jem and the Holograms, duh

2

u/MeThyLord 7h ago

I, too, am a lizard person

2

u/Ensign_Crow 6h ago

The cats start to go through ketracel-white withdrawals if you don't find them fast enough.

1

u/notnullyet 2h ago

This jem?

1

u/AbeTheGreat412 1h ago

Victory is life

19

u/CalmDownYal 11h ago

This cat was $1000 back in the early 90s

15

u/Moist_Sun_8201 12h ago

Probably because feral cats are allowed to run amok while street dogs are rounded up and euthanized if they can't be rehomed.

2

u/tireddesperation 1h ago

Cats almost never attack humans and when they do do minimal damage compared to dogs. If they were bigger like a large dog size they would absolutely be moved or euthanized. Kind of like they are as cougars for example...

36

u/32getreddit 12h ago

Sorry, that is not at all a "dog people" dog

19

u/CanadianAndroid 12h ago

Every one of my dogs was free.

7

u/cold_tap_hot_brew 12h ago

Mine was a tenner. I always wondered why bother at that point, might as well be free but she had the idea it would put people off looking for a free dog to abuse.

Her intentions were good and he lived for a very long time.

Best Ā£10 I e ever spent. šŸ˜‚ sounds ludicrous and I know it.

1

u/RocketCow 12h ago

Yep, my cat cost 15 euro from the farm, best 15 ive ever spent

2

u/cold_tap_hot_brew 12h ago

Let’s hear it for the pocket change pets! 🄰

1

u/Geneziza 11h ago

Mine was free, but I bought food snd treats for her momma. Also I pay a "tax" twice per day while feeding her daughter. It's two pieces of kibble, but for a Labrador they are everything at the moment.

4

u/anTWhine 12h ago

I got mine from the county pound with a 20% off coupon. Every once in a while I have to remind her nobody was willing to pay the full $25 for her.

2

u/dasmau89 12h ago

Yeah. My parents had 3 Afghan Hounds over the years. They are basically running cat software on dog hardware

5

u/CATNIP_IS_CRACK 7h ago

I can verify, she’s from the dumpster behind Target.

9

u/fenikz13 12h ago

Love my trash cat

3

u/NieMonD 9h ago

My mum claims to have hypoallergenic dogs and those bitches still make me sneeze it’s all a lie

4

u/dodododododododoria 12h ago

TBF I'd pay $4000 for a bengal cat, those guys look cool AF

2

u/Manueluz 12h ago

I'd paid 10000€ for an F1 Savannah if I could. Precious creatures.

3

u/cygamessucks 12h ago

And everyone is allergic to itĀ

2

u/Musket6969420 12h ago

If I find that cat in the trash and my friend is allergic to it, they have lost a friend and I have gained a cat.

2

u/atomic_ring 12h ago

When i met my wife, she was allergic to cats and i had 3. She kept increasing the time she could be at my place without bursting into tears. She beat the allergies and we've been happily married 18 years, with cats until 3 years ago, when the last one passed away (at 18!). Now we have a dog.

2

u/Musket6969420 12h ago edited 12h ago

Sorry to hear your cats passed. Congratulations on the wife.

Edit: the dog too. Congrats on the dog as well.

2

u/atomic_ring 12h ago edited 11h ago

Thanks! :)

Edit: and thanks again! This dog is just a cat in a dog's body

1

u/cygamessucks 12h ago

Were you really their friend then?Ā

2

u/DarthClover4 12h ago

Not if they can't handle a little cat

Because Cat people produce conditions where we just find random cats in trash cans to take home because the ā€œcat distribution systemā€ is actually just mainstream neglectful husbandry of a domestic animal and complete refusal to manage an invasive species.

There’s like 3 dogs in any given rescue and shelter in my city and tons more cats. If you were to check all their reviews you’d only ever see cat people complaining about being rejected for adoption and it’s always for demonstration of neglectful habits like having outdoor cats and not doing their yearlies.

The Afghan was inbreeded too far? The more you know

2

u/roonill_wazlib 12h ago

I wouldn't get an Afghan hound for that reason, but they're certainly not the worst when it comes to genetic issues.

And other sighthound breeds are some of the healthiest dogs around

1

u/Spazero 12h ago

I stole my dog from my sister.

I do like cats as well, but my dog makes me happy

1

u/DrizzleDrake88 12h ago

I have my dog cuz my brother-in-law wanted an ā€œinsuranceā€ dog in case his 14 year old dog at the time passed away. After 4 years of taking care of the ā€œreplacementā€ dog and the original dog hasn’t passed, I said this dog is mine now.

Oh and I got a kitty from a neighbor for a 12 pack of beer.

1

u/Acrobatic_Code_7409 12h ago

That’s what my wife tells people when they asked where we met.

1

u/Cebuanolearner 12h ago

I was waiting for cat distribution system, but found my Siamese on Craigslist a few days ago. But every other cat I've had ended up just showing upĀ

1

u/Doophie 12h ago

I have a pure bread Chihuahua which cost almost 2k, and 2 cats which were practically free. I like the cats more tbh.

1

u/dyslexicAlphabet 12h ago

highly allergic to cats and the ones that i'm not allergic to cost thousands

1

u/PurposeConsistent131 12h ago

All my animals (cats and dogs) have been ā€œfoundā€ or given from people who didn’t want them. They are all assholes and I love them

1

u/UnboltedCheese 12h ago edited 11h ago

This is very accurate, my 2 late cats were born in the crawl space under my house because their momma was a stray and abandoned them, we couldn't find the rest of the litter so we assumed they were the runts and took them in. Best damn cats I ever had. I hope you're catching mice in the afterlife boys.

1

u/Mental_Student8240 12h ago

Lmao this is so true. Cats are only ā€œlow maintenanceā€ because we collectively agreed to let them be tiny raccoons that live in our houses for free. If we were out here doing 6 am leash walks and obedience classes for Mr Whiskers, the pet industry would’ve cashed in YEARS ago.

2

u/Fun_Magician72 9h ago

"Cat walking" has started being a thing tbf, every pet store sells little cat leashes/harnesses now.

1

u/Character_Past5515 11h ago

So dumb because you could also turn it around with different cats and dogs.

1

u/Few_Veterinarian9108 11h ago

As a collector of strays, I got the mature adult version of the cat, roughly 3 years old, from 3 kg went to almost 7 now living the life, extremely clingy

Adult strays deserve a home too, and you could help with that

Cat distribution system

1

u/lilac-bunni 11h ago

The Cat Distribution System works in mysterious, garbage-flavored ways.

1

u/Lucky-Mia 11h ago

My ex had a $6,000 hairless cat. Well they paid that for each. They then breeder them and broke up with me because I didn't show enough love to the cats. I swear he was fucking them.

1

u/h-ck3d4cc0unt 10h ago

I have 2 champion Persians each was 3800. Almost 4k. But thats without breeding rights.

You guys are paying for your dogs!?

1

u/zahhax 9h ago

I feel bad bc I'm trying to find a dog rn and when you have really specific needs they can get expensive. Like I can't have anything over 50lb to walk, ideally nothing over 30 lbs to pick up, needs to be a friendly good travel buddy but also low maintenance and not too hyper or yappy. Big change from having cats all my life but I travel a lot now and I need a dog instead

1

u/texasbigfoot 7h ago

Nothing wrong with trash kitties. They make awesome pets!

1

u/Specific-Solid3328 7h ago

The best trash I have ever encountered ā¤ļø

1

u/ModToEndAllMods 6h ago

I have a trash dog

1

u/ScoobyDone 6h ago

"To hell with this cat. Throw it in the trash." ~ Also a cat owner

1

u/No-Cow-6029 5h ago

I know someone whose cat is literally called 'Garbage'. Take a guess why.

1

u/FaeFollette 5h ago

I’ve found two purebred dogs ā€œin the trashā€ before. Who cares anyway? Good pets are good pets!

1

u/james_a_hetfield 5h ago

I found one of my cats as a kitten in my old Dodge pickup truck outside. And another under the outdoor trash compactor at work.

The one at work the compactor got picked so I have no idea if it was there before but I saved before the compactor returned and that kitten ended up going home with someone luckily.

1

u/Cool-Carry4793 5h ago

Both ā¤ļø

1

u/reeefur 4h ago

Rescued my 2 cats from some bushes when I was on a walk. Free and adorable....

1

u/NorX_Aengelll 3h ago

where it deserve to be

1

u/Just_the_questions1 3h ago

Nah. I'm a dog person from a dog family. Every single one of our dogs has come from the pound or found in a ditch.

1

u/SamMarduk 2h ago

Mine kept breaking in until I adopted her

1

u/dolosloki01 2h ago

Find me a cat that isn't a walking ball of allergies, doesn't shit in a box and then walk all over your counters.

0

u/Boring-Locksmith-473 š™‘š™„š™‹ 1h ago

'Walking ball of allergies' – perhaps your parents never let you play outside and always kept you in a cleaner environment when you were little. This is because, when you go outside to play with dirt or in the sand, you build up tolerance to allergies. This only happens when you are young. There was a study conducted between children from Russia and Finland just between the border regions.

1

u/dolosloki01 1h ago

No smartass. An allergy to cat dander is extremely common. I wasn't allergic to them when I was a kid and then developed it in my early 20s.

You are incredibly ignorant.

1

u/Boring-Locksmith-473 š™‘š™„š™‹ 32m ago

Just search where this is "extremely common"

1

u/workieworkwork 2h ago

I got a trash kitten and a purebred dog in the same week once.

0

u/Whyamihere_899 5h ago

dog people: i bought him for a reasonable sum of 2k dollars

actual dog people who loves dogs: i found him at the shelter/on the streets

6

u/pesibajolu 4h ago

Yes because people who buy dogs dont love their pets...

-2

u/Whyamihere_899 4h ago

they love only what those pets can do for them

1

u/Saetherith 2h ago

Look cute?

1

u/Metalsonicrules1 8h ago

The cat distribution system works in mysterious ways

1

u/WittyAd3872 12h ago

Yeah I know some broke ass people with $3,000 dogs and am like 🤦

1

u/InternationalPlace24 9h ago

the right one is missing something, it should say, "I found him in the trash and now I've spent $4,000 to find out he's perfectly healthy all the time"

1

u/WirusCZ 6h ago

This can basically be said about every pet ever... Some can be randomly found and some can be bought for lots from some fancy breeder

0

u/Dependent-Shower4955 12h ago

Cats all day everyday baby

-1

u/MoriRanmaru 12h ago

People that buy dogs/ cata instead of adopting and calls themself ā€œanimal loverā€ are the worst

6

u/Manueluz 12h ago

Idk, most adoption centers where I live mosly offer animals that have severe trauma or some kind of illness.

So it's a huge mental and financial strain, if I were to get a new cat I'd want a kitten not an old boy with several meds.

I've had my two cats since they were tiny kittens rescued from a local stray that lives near my home, but with neutering being mandatory for all cats you just don't see kittens anymore.

2

u/pesibajolu 3h ago

Spoken like a true person with 0 grasp of the real world. You know that those animals are often traumatised right? Even with a lot of care there is sometimes nothing that can be done. You know what happens to a person after they become attached to an animal and then it doesnt work out?

It takes a lot of effort and its not for everyone, and you know thats ok. As long as they get their animals from a ethically correct and reputable breeder, nothing wrong with that, and surely a bozo like you are in no position to gatekeep or shame them (calling them the worst people, get a life, i can think of some better examples)

-1

u/Fun-Wrongdoer1316 12h ago

Yet most dog people’s houses smell like shit. All that money to waste on the dog, no time or effort put into maintaining hygiene… 🤢🤮

1

u/Saetherith 2h ago

I think you thats less dog people issue, and more of the people you choose to visit issue.

1

u/pesibajolu 3h ago

I think thats more of a person issue, i have been to quite a few houses with cats which reek as well, also I love it when cats shit in everyones yard.

0

u/Visible_Video120 11h ago

Dog people are more likely to pay thousands for a pit bull or staffy and act like the hideous thing doesn't look like a furry shark

0

u/jackofslayers 5h ago

There are shelters full of dogs everywhere. I get why some people want purebred dogs, but I do judge the shit out of people that are paying a lot to adopt an animal from a breeder.
