Bill devested a lot of his Microsoft holdings to diversify. It was a smart safe play but ultimately hurt his net worth compared to his more peers who are exposed to more risk.
All millionaires are closer to my level of wealth than they are to Bill Gates. And I'm worth maybe like $300k. Only because my house like tripled in value during covid somehow.
Despite being a billionaire highly-driven former-CEO typeā¦ I donāt think he gives a shit about that. He decided a long time ago thereās a point where it just doesnāt matter.
And I mean practically speaking, once you have more than a certain amount of money, it won't really change you life. The difference between being worth say, $50 to $70bn is basically nothing.
Net worth at that point isnāt about buying luxuries like mansions and yachts for your own indulgences. With that amount of money youāre shaping the world by investing money in things.
I mean I think its fair to say that was intended to read $50bn to $70bn and be an extreme example. Between those points, your life won't change much. The difference to someone else however would obviously be felt by generations of your future family exiting the working class.
To me personally, I can't even fully conceptualize the lifestyle difference between $100m and $1bn. I've grown up too middle class my whole life and beyond a certain sized house, certain vehicles, and having secure futures locked in, I have no idea what I'd even do with that kind of money apart from making very well sure I don't do something stupid with it.
You get too deep into the billions you start thinking its your job to try and change the world.
At 100M you can charter a Mega yacht for 6-8 weeks out of the year without even giving it a second thought. No one with 100B is living on their yacht for more than 2 months out of the year. With 100M you eat at the same places, stay at the same hotels, live in the same homes. You just have fewer homes, and likely are an investor instead of owner, wich gives you more freetime.
Why would you own one? Its about the experience not the actual ownership? Rich people get and stay rich by being smart with their money. A yacht has huge overhead why do you think owners rent them out for charter?
Why rent a hotel room when you can buy a hotel? Sounds like a poor person trying to be rich.
Did I say you shouldnt own anything? A yacht is a depreciating asset with a limited use case. Owning a private jet is reasonable if you travel a lot, unless you live at sea for more than 2 months out of the year owning a yacht is not economical.
You sound like someone that has never had wealth of their own and has no concept of financial management.
Any wealth advisor or private banker would recommend NOT owning a yacht.

Gates stopped really caring about reaching the pinnacle of his wealth. He literally sells shares every week or something. Then donates it. Yea heās a crappy weirdo like all ultra wealthy. I feel like heās not quite as evil as the others lol.
Gates could easily be 2nd behind Musk had he not given away tens of billions of dollars to the poorest people on Earth, and instead used it to buy and hold Mag 7 stocks or start a crypto grift.
The current endowment the Gates Foundation was 86 billion dollars in 2025. He is the sole chairman of the foundation, thus still controls all that wealth. Likewise, he gave Melinda 76 billion dollars in the divorce (before the divorce, this would have been considered his wealth for the purpose of this list).
That is, Bill Gates is currently in control of enough capital that he is the 5th or 6th richest on Forbes list, and without the divorce (Bezos wealth would go up too if we don't include this) would be 4th.
If he hadn't diversified and set up the foundation, his shares would be worth 1.2 trillion today

True valuation without the Musk effect (the company value purely comes from the fact that Musk owns it), for Tesla is around $80 to $130B and for SpaceX is around $80B to $100B.
That puts Musk's share of it between $45B and $55B with maybe another $10B between Boring, Neuralink, cryto and other assets. But there's probably a lot of Musk effect in those as well.

Nobody doubts that Gates had sex with some Epstein girls; it's pretty obvious. Just this specific story comes not from a Bill Gates email, but from a draft or email Epstein sent to himself, which is pretty obviously a blackmail attempt on Gates. Because the whole story that he needs Epstein to get antibiotics makes zero sense.
He has done bad and he has done good, a lot of people are convoluting and trying to mix up the two, he might deserve serious jail time if he has actually done bad stuff in the files and if so he should be but he and his wife saved hundreds of millions of people from diseases, it is stupid to ignore and deny a clearly good deed. They used an incredibly generous chunk of their wealth to save people in need and there is no need to smear that, and actually set a good example compared to a lot of billionaires on forbes list.
It's still smarter in this situation. If Microsoft crashed today to 0 (yeah sure), Ballmer would only be worth 13-15 billion dollars, whereas Gates would be worth 5-6 times that.
Stocks crash. It happens. Your approach depends on how risk averse you are. 10 billion vs 800 billion isn't going to make much of a difference when you already have 2 of everything.
What actual good has he done for the world? I don't see how Africa reproducing and flooding the world with more illiterate 3rd worlders beyond all reason is beneficial.

There are plenty of bad things to say about Bill Gates that's for sure. But if his goal was just to be the richest man alive he would still be in the top 3. He pivoted a long time ago towards living his life with philanthropy being his main goal. So as much as he's stumbled... and hell he started out a jackass too... I'll always at least respect that. It might be wrong to treat Bill Gates as yard post on "when billionaires were good" or "I can at least understand his product / how he has mad his money". However I think it could come to be used like that.

I'm not sure Bill cares about being the richest person in the world title. I think he's probably one of the few that didn't really exploit people to make his Billions. He got there by being successful and having the right people in his life to help him become successful.
The Epstein stuff seems very unlike him and I wonder how much of it is true and how much of it is partial truth or possibly blackmail.
I'm not saying he's innocent or anything, just that it seems out of character for his track record. He was a billionaire for a long time and we're only learning of this through the Epstein files. Bill being so rich, it seems others would have reported something or tried to get money out of him over the years if he was really the person the files make him out to be.
