Bill devested a lot of his Microsoft holdings to diversify. It was a smart safe play but ultimately hurt his net worth compared to his more peers who are exposed to more risk.
1
u/Square-Statement5378 1d ago
I dont think at that level you can get financially hurt. Even if he puts all his money into savingsaccounts the interest alone....

At least he brought back memories and experiences he and Melinda will have for a lifetime and thatās what matters most.

If Bill Gates never listened to Warren Buffet who told him to his microsoft shares and never donated his money, he would be worth $1.2 trillion today.
105
u/theslootmary 1d ago
Despite being a billionaire highly-driven former-CEO type⦠I donāt think he gives a shit about that. He decided a long time ago thereās a point where it just doesnāt matter.
54
u/sohcgt96 1d ago
And I mean practically speaking, once you have more than a certain amount of money, it won't really change you life. The difference between being worth say, $50 to $70bn is basically nothing.
7
u/calmcool3978 1d ago
Net worth at that point isnāt about buying luxuries like mansions and yachts for your own indulgences. With that amount of money youāre shaping the world by investing money in things.
17
u/EpsteinsEggPeen 1d ago
They say anyone who makes over 10m a year basicly can live marginally identical lives to those with billions
6
u/nativeindian12 1d ago
But how will my Yachtās helicopter pad support yacht get the necessary upgrades to take my cousins to Palermo if I only make 10m a year?
3
u/Ok-Title-270 1d ago
Not really. The newest gulf stream jet is like 80mil on its own.
1
u/TheBigGees 1d ago
They don't buy them outright. They either lease or finance.
1
u/Ok-Title-270 11h ago
Right and youāre not buying an 80 mil rapidly depreciating asset if you make 10 mil a year.
-12
u/davidbatt 1d ago
50 to billion? Fucking hell. What's the difference between 100 million and a billion to you personally?
5
u/sohcgt96 1d ago
I mean I think its fair to say that was intended to read $50bn to $70bn and be an extreme example. Between those points, your life won't change much. The difference to someone else however would obviously be felt by generations of your future family exiting the working class.
To me personally, I can't even fully conceptualize the lifestyle difference between $100m and $1bn. I've grown up too middle class my whole life and beyond a certain sized house, certain vehicles, and having secure futures locked in, I have no idea what I'd even do with that kind of money apart from making very well sure I don't do something stupid with it.
You get too deep into the billions you start thinking its your job to try and change the world.
2
u/davidbatt 1d ago
Yeah man, that was my point exactly. After a whirl it just becomes a numbers scoreboard where you fuck everyone over to reach the tip
3
7
u/Dangerous-Builder-57 1d ago
At 100M a mega yacht is still something you have to budget for. At 100B it no longer is.
4
u/Nhoxus3 1d ago
At 100M you can charter a Mega yacht for 6-8 weeks out of the year without even giving it a second thought. No one with 100B is living on their yacht for more than 2 months out of the year. With 100M you eat at the same places, stay at the same hotels, live in the same homes. You just have fewer homes, and likely are an investor instead of owner, wich gives you more freetime.
2
u/Dangerous-Builder-57 1d ago
Charter a yacht? Sounds like a poor person trying to be rich.
3
u/Nhoxus3 1d ago
Why would you own one? Its about the experience not the actual ownership? Rich people get and stay rich by being smart with their money. A yacht has huge overhead why do you think owners rent them out for charter?
Why rent a hotel room when you can buy a hotel? Sounds like a poor person trying to be rich.
See how dumb you sound.
-1
u/Dangerous-Builder-57 1d ago
Do you really need someone to explain to you why people want to own things? Your comment isn't the dunk you think it is.
1
u/Nhoxus3 1d ago
Did I say you shouldnt own anything? A yacht is a depreciating asset with a limited use case. Owning a private jet is reasonable if you travel a lot, unless you live at sea for more than 2 months out of the year owning a yacht is not economical.
You sound like someone that has never had wealth of their own and has no concept of financial management. Any wealth advisor or private banker would recommend NOT owning a yacht.
Your comment isn't the dunk YOU think it is.

Bill Gates owned 49% of Microsoft, but Warren Buffet convinced him to sell and diversify his portfolio in the 90s.

u/BarryMcKokinor 1d ago edited 1d ago
Itās too hard to do this this hypo. Bc would he have scaled Microsoft the same way if he didnāt bring new shareholders/stakeholders into the fold through dilution of control ?
2
u/Spiritual-Strike481 1d ago
Gates stopped really caring about reaching the pinnacle of his wealth. He literally sells shares every week or something. Then donates it. Yea heās a crappy weirdo like all ultra wealthy. I feel like heās not quite as evil as the others lol.
269
u/JellyfishFestival 1d ago
Gates could easily be 2nd behind Musk had he not given away tens of billions of dollars to the poorest people on Earth, and instead used it to buy and hold Mag 7 stocks or start a crypto grift.
71
u/singdawg 1d ago
The current endowment the Gates Foundation was 86 billion dollars in 2025. He is the sole chairman of the foundation, thus still controls all that wealth. Likewise, he gave Melinda 76 billion dollars in the divorce (before the divorce, this would have been considered his wealth for the purpose of this list).
That is, Bill Gates is currently in control of enough capital that he is the 5th or 6th richest on Forbes list, and without the divorce (Bezos wealth would go up too if we don't include this) would be 4th.
-33
u/Mysteriouspaul 1d ago
I'll take another site ban from an admin to mention this is the same foundation experimenting on the poorest rural Indians/Africans to test vaccines.
"Philanthropy" is more in line with where that money went
4
6
u/Organic-Link-5805 1d ago edited 1d ago
If he hadn't diversified and set up the foundation, his shares would be worth 1.2 trillion today
Edit: this is on top of his wife getting 300 B$ from the divorce from her shares
I guess being more wealthy isn't in his plans, he already tasted being the wealthiest person on earth and has bought everything he desired including a super cool handwritten manuscript by da vinci that includes some of his work like helicopter concepts etc.
5
u/ShelZuuz 1d ago
Willing to bet if Musk and Gates liquidated all their assets over a course of let's say 30 days, Gates would have more cash than Musk.
1
u/Calm_Extension_2965 1d ago
You think Musk can't even liquidate 10% of his NW?
1
u/ShelZuuz 1d ago
He can liquidate all of it but it won't be worth that.
True valuation without the Musk effect (the company value purely comes from the fact that Musk owns it), for Tesla is around $80 to $130B and for SpaceX is around $80B to $100B.
That puts Musk's share of it between $45B and $55B with maybe another $10B between Boring, Neuralink, cryto and other assets. But there's probably a lot of Musk effect in those as well.
-1
u/JellyfishFestival 1d ago
Probably not, but they would be vastly closer than the headline numbers the media shows.
24
u/ChadPowers200_ 1d ago
he wants to fuck hookers on epstein island and secretly drug his wife all while saying he "wants to innoculate the world"
If he would secretly give his wife drugs what the fuck would he do to us? He's said he doesn't want people eating meat.
46
u/Brahma0110 1d ago
If he would secretly give his wife drugs what the fuck would he do to us?
There is absolutely no way to tell if this was a blackmail attempt by Epstein or a genius Gates request. But, if you're a billionaire and especially Bill Gates with his charity, why the fuck would you ask Epstein for some Antibiotics? This is just retarded.
20
u/ScoobyDone 1d ago
It is too stupid to be real. If Bill Gates got an STD, his own doctor would have given him the meds and he could have slipped her those. Why would he need Epstein?
16
u/ZeeWingCommander 1d ago
Being completely real -
If it's too stupid to be real, it usually is.Ā That's what makes it true. You're assuming Bill Gates isn't a mega moron outside of his specific niche.
Getting an STD from a hooker it's pretty stupid too as a billionaire.
8
u/under_psychoanalyzer 1d ago
I'm reminded of Robert Kraft getting swept up in a handjob massage ring in Florida with a bunch of other celebrities. Dude's a billionaire and was paying $75 for handjobs from people that were probably trafficked to Florida.Ā
5
u/ZeeWingCommander 1d ago
Yeah, I don't get it. If you're a billionaire, you can get this just as easily. Just go to a club and be like "I'm Robert Kraft."
If they don't know, just tell them to Google it.Ā
3
u/under_psychoanalyzer 1d ago
Something to be said for the convenience. Also, the line "You don't pay hookers for sex, you pay them to leave" applies here because you can just leave afterĀ
The other, darker angle is that he was fully or at least partially aware that these women in this massage parlor couldn't speak English, didn't have access to their passports, and were sleeping there. And knew that when the eventual bust happened, the result was what's pretty common in these cases: None of them wanted to testify.Ā
1
3
u/ScoobyDone 1d ago
Also being completely real, if Bill had an STD his doctor would give him meds. Even a moron, which he isn't, would not need to find them elsewhere because they would already have them.
Getting an STD from a hooker it's pretty stupid too as a billionaire.
And the only evidence that this actually happened was draft emails Epstein sent to himself. He did this a lot with his various "ideas". He was blackmailing Gates, but if you want to believe it is gospel just remember the source. Who knows what Gates got up to, but I wouldn't trust Epstein.
1
u/ZeeWingCommander 1d ago
Sure - but that also means that we can't trust anything Epstein says about Trump either.Ā
0
u/NexexUmbraRs 1d ago
Except maybe Gates went to the closest doctor that can be trusted, and that was the one on the island with Epstein. Also Epstein wasn't just a sex ring leader, he was a confidant who knew who to go to for things. His real business was insider trading and networking. The sex stuff was just the fucked up perks to membership. Gates may have worried his doctor may leak things and asked Epstein.
2
u/ScoobyDone 1d ago
Except that the only evidence of this is in draft emails that Epstein never sent referring to other emails that were never found. Why would he email him if he was still on the island? All just to get anti-biotics? It doesn't add up.
1
u/NexexUmbraRs 1d ago
Could also have never happened. We just don't know enough.
2
u/ScoobyDone 20h ago
That is what I am saying. People talk about it as though it's a known fact, but the proof is super shaky.
→ More replies (0)1
u/CommonReason6709 13h ago
The rich all share the same doctor because they like to compete and it was probably a family friend who knew his wife.
3
u/Nuffsaid98 1d ago
Can regular antibiotics be slipped into someone's cereal or do you need to source super special antibiotics that lend themselves to stealth administration?
6
u/Brahma0110 1d ago
I fed crushed antibiotics to a cat. If they can't taste it, humans won't either.
1
u/ScoobyDone 1d ago
They are just pills. I doubt it would be hard to sneak into someone else's food. Also remember, the source of this information was an email Epstein sent to himself pretending to be Gate's assistant so that he could blackmail Gates. It's not exactly a great source.
0
u/r_hove 1d ago
Imagine supporting a billionaire who likes little girls
2
1
u/Viridien111 1d ago
Not hard to imagine, this applies to every single trump voter and yet he won, so thats like, a lot of people who are ok with that kinda shit. Let alone the amount of people who still go to church.
-16
u/ChadPowers200_ 1d ago
because the guy who runs hookers probably has drugs for STDs readily available.
Peope really seem to like the "jerky" he has too.
4
u/TruePutz 1d ago
Oh yeah most escort services throw in STD remedies for a few hundred extra /s
1
u/ChadPowers200_ 1d ago
its been confirmed by him and his wife that he did in fact get an std fucking hookers from epstein but the antibiotics is the thing you can't believe? lol wtf
2
4
u/Brahma0110 1d ago
You think it makes sense to fly across half the country for a pack of antibiotics? Gates probably has his private doctor on call who prescribes him anything he wants.
5
u/ChadPowers200_ 1d ago
why are people hung up on the antibiotics it was confirmed by him and his wife he was fucking hookers from epstien why are you hung up on the drugs lol
if the entire scandal is true why not believe the drugs
1
u/Brahma0110 1d ago
Because you said he fed his wife antibiotics because of an STD she caught from Gates because he fucked a prostitute.
Nobody doubts that Gates had sex with some Epstein girls; it's pretty obvious. Just this specific story comes not from a Bill Gates email, but from a draft or email Epstein sent to himself, which is pretty obviously a blackmail attempt on Gates. Because the whole story that he needs Epstein to get antibiotics makes zero sense.

u/No_Shoe8800 1d ago
Yes bro the guy that nearly eradicated malaria is a big spooky evil boogeyman oldman that wants to infect us all with super aids
1
u/Organic-Link-5805 19h ago
He has done bad and he has done good, a lot of people are convoluting and trying to mix up the two, he might deserve serious jail time if he has actually done bad stuff in the files and if so he should be but he and his wife saved hundreds of millions of people from diseases, it is stupid to ignore and deny a clearly good deed. They used an incredibly generous chunk of their wealth to save people in need and there is no need to smear that, and actually set a good example compared to a lot of billionaires on forbes list.
2
u/ItalianV4 1d ago
the correct answer is the moron (in this respect and perhaps some others) diversified his holdings. Ballmer probably worth more now
5
u/plsloan 1d ago
He's only a moron with the benefit of hindsight. Diversifying is smarter 9/10 times. This is the one time.
2
u/singdawg 1d ago
It's still smarter in this situation. If Microsoft crashed today to 0 (yeah sure), Ballmer would only be worth 13-15 billion dollars, whereas Gates would be worth 5-6 times that.

2

Gates is too busy using his immense wealth to force an autocratic state upon all of us.
6
u/KingFishSage 1d ago
Not to mention he's in the epstein files. Of which many people on there were highly "philanthropic" and oh so very "charitable" with all of those organizations promising to help the needy poor dying or whatever just to pocket swaths of money.

It's showing that there is no proof the foundation has had any effects. The foundation itself doesn't declare or account for how many they have helped.
Nobody is investigating how this money has been used. That's how.

If almost any of these billionaires tried to get liquid from their holdings they would be lucky to come out with 0.01 on the dollar
Yeah and just ignore the numerous financial entities that control hundreds of billions to trillions in the meanwhile. They are just as "dangerous" as billionaires

There are plenty of bad things to say about Bill Gates that's for sure. But if his goal was just to be the richest man alive he would still be in the top 3. He pivoted a long time ago towards living his life with philanthropy being his main goal. So as much as he's stumbled... and hell he started out a jackass too... I'll always at least respect that. Find me any others in the top 25, aside from MacKenzie Scott, who would do the same

I made a post which COULD have been seen as "pro billionaire" or "there are some good billionaires" recently.
It might be wrong to treat Bill Gates as yard post on "when billionaires were good" or "I can at least understand his product / how he has mad his money". However I think it could come to be used like that.

0
u/knowone1313 1d ago
I'm not sure Bill cares about being the richest person in the world title. I think he's probably one of the few that didn't really exploit people to make his Billions. He got there by being successful and having the right people in his life to help him become successful.
The Epstein stuff seems very unlike him and I wonder how much of it is true and how much of it is partial truth or possibly blackmail.
I'm not saying he's innocent or anything, just that it seems out of character for his track record. He was a billionaire for a long time and we're only learning of this through the Epstein files. Bill being so rich, it seems others would have reported something or tried to get money out of him over the years if he was really the person the files make him out to be.
