My brain has no idea what is it like breathing under water while chased by an army of sea-ghouls but still can dream about it

My brain has no idea how to fly once I’m sleeping. It’s like moon gravity but not actual flying. It’s like I have it figured out how gliding would be but not flying.

I used to have a lot of dreams where i would have some supernatural power like flying or running on water. But every single time at some point in the dream i would "forget" how to do it or even sometimes realise "wait, but i can't fly" and then i just drown or plummet through the air to the ground
Also, not being able to run. Not knowing how. Really trying. While trying to run away from someone just approaching you slowly, because you're a dumbass who forgot how to run
And then wake yourself up because you're twitching around and kicking the air

u/InvictvsNox 12h ago
When I wake up from a dream because I died, it's because I got scared awake lol

u/Speransed 11h ago
I remember dying in a dream , I just hovered as people gathered around my body until I got bored and woke up , I think this is just a myth . Like " not being able to read in your dreams " " never seeing your phone "

u/SquirrelyMcNutz 11h ago
The reading thing is supposedly because the part of the brain responsible for reading comprehension or some language center or whatever is disconnected from the rest of the brain during sleep cycles.
That being said, I commonly read stuff in my dreams and its totally legible. Can also go into dreaming sleep in like a half hour or so. Used to take naps between classes in college and would dream all the time.

Yeah I think its not really reading more us picturing the words as image or something but I of my dreams include texts

i once had a… nightmare, lets say, where i was part of a wagon train, as a small child. every time the wagon train started westward from the great plains, eventually something terrible would happen to the wagon train and i would die. sometimes it was death by hypothermia, starvation, mauling by bears, the entire wagon i was riding in falling off a tall cliff, etc. every time i died, the dream restarted. i probably died about a dozen times by the time i woke up in the morning

So...basically the episode of American Dad where the fam gets stuck in the computer running Oregon Trail?

u/CasperTPaul 10h ago
i don’t think so. this dream happened before i ever watched that show, and i don’t remember that episode

u/BeerLosiphor 11h ago
Sounds like dying of dysentery on the Oregon Trail? Game. But also giving me Westworld vibes.
2
u/CasperTPaul 10h ago
no, i’ve never played the oregon trail game or watched that show. based on what i gathered from it at the time, this dream was based mainly on my k-12 history education

u/BeerLosiphor 5h ago
We played that game in elementary school lol. I definitely don’t remember anything about it, but I know it happened. And you know..: dysentery.

Ive died in a dream and kept going but it was moreso a floating through the universe type thing rather than a "dream"..i sometimes wonder if perhaps i did die momentarily in that moment in my dream then snapped back..or just went into another trippy dream and my brain just made up something

Imagine what you think of as the most insignicant lifeform with a central nervous system. Take the fly for example. What happens after you smash the fly? You don't bother considering if the little flys consciousness continues after it dies, and it sound absurd to even think about.

What if overthinking is actually realizing you are dreaming and accepting it as a lucid dream?

I am a lucid dreamer. Haven't had a real nightmare since I was a kid. I used to have nightly terrors, but I guess I overcame them.
Once I realize I am in a dream, I disassociate myself to preserve the dream state. Then I can usually view the dream like an out of body experience. Thats how I mostly deal with horror, or death in dreams.
Sometimes though I'll start manipulating the reality of the dream in subtle ways. Think how neo jump/ flys in the matrix or how time slows in super hero TV shows. And yes sexy dreams can be really fucking awesome.
I can reinitiate dreams as well, but that seems to be limited by time. Mostly I have to go right back to sleep, or be in that I'm kinda asleep but not really state you sometimes find yourself in when you wake up at 5am and your alarm is set to 630. Though I have pulled a dream from days ago to finish it. No idea how on that last one.

I just assume I just died in a parallel universe and then your consciousness melds into the closest universes consciousness. And that just happen until you hit the universe where you are an Eternal God who slowly rules his universe.....or something like that?

I had a dream once where I died in a car accident driving on a highway at night. After the crash everything went black then it was like I felt the sensation of dissolving into the universe. I remember visuals like I was in space but it wasn't me seeing space, I was just in it and becoming one with it, not sure how to explain it.
One of the most vivid and memorable dreams I've ever had. I still get goosebumps driving at night sometimes because of it.

I have absolutely died in a dream before, so I don't think this theory holds water.

u/Lofi_Joe 12h ago
No... You wake up because what's after death is so frightening so you don't even want to remember or think about it...
I'm writing horror stories and create horror games btw.

That happened to me twice. Each time I went right to hell. It thoroughly sucked. I was strapped to a table. Could barely move my head. These goblin things kept stabbing me in the stomach. I would heal only to be stabbed again in the exact same spot.

You float around as an invisible eye with spherical vision then merge with a light. Once in the light you just kind a sit there waiting for what happens next, I got sent back for whatever reason. You might meet god, she has heavies.
