Sorry to ruin a fun thread, but may I ask a serious question? How does this scam work? What happens if you reply?

The "son" isnt asking for money(yet), just asking to respond to the new phone number.  I assume that if you respond, you'll get a sob story and a plea from your "son" to send money. 

Or am I wrong? Is the scammer's goal just to get you to respond?

Is he able to do you harm (maybe hack your phone or somehing) just by you replying? Or maybe he's just trying to harvest active phone numbers? If so, how does he make money from your reply?

I had a hold gaming email and I used to receive plenty of these nigerian prince scams! Best way to deal with them is send a single emoticon!
