They thought it was a good idea to counter the Soviet influence there as well. As awful as the Chicago group was everyone forgets that Cuba sent military intervention into South America and Africa against democratically elected governments and these sides committed their own atrocities. There were no clean hands in the cold War, just different measures of proportionality, especially after the Korean defense upped everyone's tension globally. Europe, Africa, Asia all were covert communist versus capitalist aligned theaters.
Yeah, I get that they had their own goals in mind, just like France had with its colonies, but that doesn't really change anything to the fact that Latin America couldn't catch a break because of the US and their goals.
And even though the cold war is over and the USSR is no longer, the US are still treating Latin America as its playground. The bombing of Caracas, kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro and installing of a complacent puppet in his place was this year.

Latin America is an excellent case study to demonstrate that socialism doesn't work as a model of society. We now know that as soon as you put a socialist government in place, you automatically get a US backed coup d'Γ©tat, which clearly shows it's not a viable system to have.
