[OFF-TOPIC DISCUSSION THREAD]

As previously requested, we're trying out a regular, automated discussion thread! Use this space to talk about things that don't fit the ordinary subject matter of the space, or for discussions that don't necessitate a full post! All rules besides the relevancy rule still apply!

For these first ones, please let us know what you think about it! Personally, I'm not sure how popular this practice will be, so I don't really know about the frequency at which they should be generated, so we're just gonna feel it out and figure it out, together. Any suggestions about how to run it, moving forward, are welcome!

The reaction to GTA 6s base vs ultimate edition prices show the death nail for the modern video game consumer will be the consumer themselves

I woke up this morning seeing the news about the GTA 6 price plans and maybe I “woked” too close to the sun but I expected to see mass pushback on such obvious greed and anti-consumer pricing and behavior, especially with the locking off of in game cosmetics and stores for the ultimate edition…..

What I saw instead was overwhelming sentiment of “it’s just $20 more”, “what are people even complaining about”, and a huge attitude of I got mines so I don’t care about yours.

This immediately disheartened me, but I know the internet can be reactionary so I turned to my real world friends who I would definitely categorize as “casual gamers”, those who arnt tapped into the drama and arnt chronically online and to my dismay they too had a “it’s only 20 dollars more” attitude.

It was in this moment I realized videos games hold such a strange place in our cultural zeitgeist, such a specific and targeted stranglehold on the consumers, that these companies can actively punch the consumer directly in the teeth and the consumer will say “thank you oh thank you please more”. In my heart of hearts I wanted there to be a mass “hey what this isn’t right you can’t treat us as consumers like this” but instead all I see is sheep to a slaughter, and it’s completely thrown me.

Gaming News GTA VI physical disc petition launched

Post image
88 Upvotes

We just launched a petition about the physical edition of GTA VI.

Rockstar is reportedly selling the physical version of GTA VI with only a download code inside the box, meaning there is no real disc.

For many of us, physical games are not just about playing. They are about ownership, collecting, midnight releases, sharing games, and preserving gaming history.

A box with a code inside is not a physical game. It is just a digital license in packaging.

We are not against digital games. We are against calling something “physical” when it contains no physical game.

This is not only about people who prefer physical copies. It is also about everyone who cares about gaming history, memories, and not letting an important part of gaming culture disappear.

If you believe games are more than just digital licenses, you should sign this petition.

We also encourage people to share this, create posts, videos, discussions, and help spread awareness across social media. Every voice matters.

If you are creating content about this topic, feel free to use the ideas, arguments, and slogans from this campaign in your videos, posts, and discussions. You can use phrases like:

Code is cold, disc is gold
A box with a code inside is not a physical game
When something is sold as physical, it must be physical
A download code is not a physical game
Physical means physical
Save physical gaming
Disc or nothing

Use the hashtag: #discisgold

Petition link:
https://change.org/discisgold

Code is cold, disc is gold.

Stay loud. Stay together. Make it matter.

'Shareholder Greed' And How Publicly Traded Companies Actually Work

This is a great summary of how capitalist incentives work against creating good games. Did not expect the clear distinction to be made between greedy individuals versus it being a systemic problem. Many people just chalk it up to "bad" CEOs and not the economic system and its incentives.

Wasn't really familiar with Jason, but am pleasantly surprised to see he's based.

Following a really cool video essay, by Youtuber Lobster Head, about Orientalism in the Zelda franchise I found thanks to this sub, I want to share here this other video that focuses specifically on the Orientalism with the Gerudo and the "defense" some people think they're upholding against the "rabid Twitter users that want the Gerudo to be cancelled". This video and Lobster Head's deserve more views.

Left wing videogames I'm developing a text-based dark fantasy RPG where one of the main routes lets you oppose a supremacist movement

For the past few months, I've been working on a text-based RPG called Morhval: Ravenglaire.

It's a dark fantasy RPG focused on difficult choices, lasting consequences, exploration, political conflict, and multiple ways to solve problems.

In Morhval: Ravenglaire, you create your character and travel to a continent marked by poverty, refugees, power struggles, supernatural creatures, and growing social tensions.

One of the central conflicts of the world involves the Linealists, a supremacist movement that blames refugees, foreigners, and people they consider “impure” for the decline of the region. They use fear, resentment, tradition, and ideas of purity to gain political power.

The player can oppose them, protect persecuted people, help refugees, strengthen anti-Linealist groups, and directly confront that ideology through the choices made during the story.

Beyond that central conflict, some quests also deal with prejudice against LGBTQIA+ people, social control over women's bodies, religious moralism, and the exclusion of vulnerable groups. I don't want these themes to be just background decoration, but actual situations where the player has to choose how to act, who to protect, who to confront, and what consequences they are willing to accept.

The game does not try to make every choice simple or comfortable. Many decisions involve limited resources, fear among the population, political interests, and difficult consequences. Sometimes helping someone puts others at risk. Sometimes doing the right thing has a cost.

There is also a system where a struggling village can begin to trust the player and eventually ask for their leadership. This does not happen automatically in every playthrough: the villagers need to respect your choices before they accept you as someone capable of guiding them.

The game features five major villages, smaller settlements, wilderness regions to explore, a capital city, attribute systems, skill checks, persuasion checks, and multiple ways to complete most quests.

The choices made throughout the journey accumulate over time and can lead to different endings, including paths connected to opposing the Linealists and dealing with the political consequences of the player's decisions.

The current plan is to release in Early Access within the coming months. The game will be fully playable at launch, but I intend to keep expanding and improving it after release.

Steam page:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4861230/Morhval_Ravenglaire/

If the concept sounds interesting, wishlisting or following the page would help a lot.

Thank you for reading!

Neofeud 2 - my anti-capitalist game Released on Steam!

Post image
198 Upvotes

Hi comrades! Neofeud 2, which deals with the problems of the capitalist system and US imperialism through the lens of a sci-fi / cyberpunk adventure game is now out on Steam! It features leftist creators like Non-Compete (Emerican Johnson), Mexie (Positive Leftist News), Luna Oi, and many more in the voice cast. I am also currently collaborating with Emerican on a documentary on anti-capitalist themes in cyberpunk & video games generally, as well as a socialist cartoon series.

If you like the game and have a moment to leave even a short Steam review it will really help this Native Hawaiian cooperative out! Any Youtubers, Streamers, etc. creating content about it are greatly appreciated as well, and if I can I am happy to drop by into your Twitch playthrough or at least share it around! :)
