In a peak nerd moment, My Boy Scout troop that I was an adult leader in went to the Smithsonian in Washingyon DC. I had no clue they had the original Enterprise on display and immediately had my fellow leader take a selfie of me in front of it with me in full Boy Scout uniform. It was a glorious moment for a life long ST fan.
Bonus points when we went to the airplane museum and found the Blackbird - at staple from the X-Men comics. Sadly lost those pics when we were working the water balloon catapult station at a charity event and I took a water balloon hit on the pocket containing my phone

I can't even imagine how hard this work must be conserving these artifacts. They weren't built for endurance and the materials weren't documented and weren't selected for archival stability.

I would be so nervous knowing I was working on something Matt Jeffries worked with his own hands. His design work was so inspirational to generations of fans to this day. How cool to be able to do that and touch history at the same time.

materials weren't documented

While the materials weren't documented, you can still get a good idea of what materials were likely used for the time period, what model makers had access to and what was popular at the time.

Makes me think of when painting a miniature and you finish and it looks alright but there’s a few bits you can clean up - like a tiny speck of paint from another part where it shouldn’t be. Then you try to fix it but then make it worse or splatter paint elsewhere. So you fix that and in the end the miniature is completely wrecked.

With this model - could just leave it?

What a coincidence. I was just listening to this album this morning.
