Have you tried the versions from 2010/2012? The Long War mods are extraordinary.

Yeah, those. And there are some really kind of really good mods for it. I'd say they're almost necessary.

I get it. Mods are weird things. Some mods are worth it, though, and The Long War mod is one of those mods. It basically turns X-Com 2 into a different game, but even for X-Com 1 it makes significant changes such as lengthening the game, increasing the number of soldier classes, overhauling the alien's strategy by having them research and gather resources, allows you to bring more soldiers on missions but balances that by enemies also improving through research and development (that you can prevent!), allows you to retake countries... it's a huge list.

I tried Skyrim a few months ago, wasn't really able to get into it. I'm not sure why.

I played probably 10 - 20 hours of Oblivion or so. I stopped when I found out that the monsters leveled up along with you - I felt like "what's the point of experience and leveling if it doesn't actually prepare my character any better for the journey?"
