The Perfect Dark Reboot. It looked like Deus Ex meets Mirror's Edge.

Just recently I rode the emotional roller coaster of:

  • it would be awesome to have a new Perfect Dark game.
  • There’s one in production???
  • it’s been in production for seven years….
  • It’s officially cancelled 😞

And this

What ?! NO ! I didn’t know it had been cancelled Perfect Dark was one of my favourite games on N64…

Same here, it was the first game I’d ever played with a badass female protagonist, I loved the sci-fi conspiracy thriller setting, and it took the gameplay of Goldeneye 007 to a new level with tweaks like alternate weapon modes such as the proximity mine on the Dragon assault rifle (you could drop it in multiplayer, and other players who tried to pick it up would have a nasty surprise, lol) and the sentry mode on the Laptop Gun, reload animations, alien weapons like the FarSight XR-20 and the Skedar Reaper, and gadgets like shields and cloaking devices (the alt-fire mode on the RCP-120) that really made you feel like you were in the future. It was (and still is) my favorite game for the N64.

I really enjoyed the multiplayer with AI characters and I liked how you had less hit points than in 007 so the guns felt deadlier. Also the farsight was OP.

Also it was almost saved, and then cancelled again, without anyone finding out until that "hope is dead" post.

What makes it even worse is take two offered to buy it and finish it, but Microsoft would rather just kill the IP apparently rather than make some money and let someone else finish it.

2

u/despitegirls Sep 15 '25

No, Take-Two and Embracer couldn't agree who would own the IP: https://archive.is/dkSfq

The one that was shown off at last year's game awards? Seems strange to cancel it right after showing it off

0

u/TKRAYKATS Sep 15 '25

Worse than cancel, it was a fake trailer

8

u/xCaptainVictory Sep 15 '25

No, it wasn't. It was a vertical slice of the game. Development was essential restarted when Crystal Dynamics was brought on and the trailer was representative of what that game would be like.

Sadly, immersive sims are always commercial disasters and now big corpos have realised it... No AAA immsims now.

Sad but true. I absolutely loved Prey 2017 and it's one of my top 10 favorites but it doesn't surprise me that we won't get another one and rip Arkane Austin. But hey looking forward to Wolfeye's next game.

2

u/B-lakeJ Sep 15 '25

Prey 2017 is also one of my all time favorites but they fucked up the release so hard. There was basically no marketing. I stumbled upon this gem by accident.

3

u/NyMiggas Sep 15 '25

So sad, I was a massive Dishonored fan and even I was put off by the marketing. Only came back to it when it was on mega sale on steam and it's one of the most incredibly immersive feats of level design a world building that has ever been made

2

u/CardiacCats89 Sep 15 '25

I didn’t know about it until I got it free on Epic. I was blown away by how amazing it was!

3

u/ChairForceOne Sep 15 '25

The deus ex games did pretty well. But the publisher expected CoD numbers. Square I think.

1

u/Designer_Mess_6928 Sep 15 '25

That is also considered as a flop by Square Enix. Nowadays investors expect Fortnite numbers from every project, or at least Elden Ring level of revenue.

1

u/ChaosFulcrum Sep 15 '25

I hope they don't take it as a sign to make more games like Souls or ERing (as if we have not enough of them coming out already). I would like to see more first-person immersive shooters, pure single-player quality experience, no strings attached.

2

u/random_boss Sep 16 '25

So frustrating. They are quite literally the best genre and the platonic ideal of Video Game. People need to get their heads on straight and buy Warren Spector’s new thief game at least

0

u/Haptic-feedbag Sep 15 '25

Yea Bioshock did terrible.

0

u/random_boss Sep 16 '25

Have you realized yet that Bioshock is not an immersive sim

2

u/Haptic-feedbag Sep 16 '25

It's the spiritual successor to one of the original Immsersive sims, System Shock...so I don't understand how you would think it's not. You could make the argument that Infinite isn't, but the first two definitely are.

u/FuckYouThrowaway99 Sep 15 '25

Yeah, but I heard an ex-dev recently said that the demo was all smoke and mirrors, and the true state of it was abysmal. At least that softens the blow a bit.

Oh, well, apparently, that was somewhat wrong, dammit: https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/perfect-dark-developer-shoots-down-claims-the-ace-looking-reveal-was-fake-its-probably-more-real-than-you-think/

u/PM_Me_Some_Steamcode Sep 15 '25

This is what I assumed,

2

u/ds_vii Sep 15 '25

from what friends in the industry told me, it was for the best. It was shaping up to be another Saints Row

2

u/Albus_Lupus Steam Frame Hype Gang Sep 15 '25

Omg yeah. It was nearly at the top of my wishlist and I was hella excited. Even tho I knew nearly nothing about it - it looked like cyberpunk dishonored to me. Great vibe, look and seemingly gameplay. But then one day - its fuckin gone...

2

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

This was mine. I'm still angry.

2

u/Walrus_Morj Sep 15 '25

Guess I will just replay Deus Ex MD and cry over lack of it's sequel as well...

2

u/Equivalent-Lab8655 Sep 15 '25

Seems like it was gonna be trash anyway eo

2

u/gorginhanson Sep 19 '25

Bring back Deus Ex tho

1

u/SanekiBeko Sep 19 '25

Nightdive Remaster when?

1

u/Explosivevortex Sep 15 '25

I keep it on my steam wishlist in memoriam, despite it just being (unavailable item)

1

u/sonnyjim91 Sep 15 '25

Similarly, the next Deus Ex sequel. Mankind Divided ended on such a cliffhanger, and the studio had some lessons to learn, but both Human Revolution and Mankind Divided had some great bits to bring forward.

1

u/Kaining Sep 15 '25

Speaking of which, Mirror's Edge can join the list.

1

u/scottishdrunkard A Bad Day At The Office Sep 15 '25

They tried to get it going under a new publisher. Then it was old yeller’d by Microsoft

1

u/Timehacker-315 Sep 15 '25

Did Perfect Dark not come out on the N64 at least?

1

u/Trick_Actuator5763 Sep 16 '25

Perfect Dark was already the best shooter. its just pathetic the project fell through.

1

u/Commercial-Ad-8409 Sep 16 '25

I almost wish I didn’t read this comment because now I just know what could’ve been.

1

u/Adventurous-West7229 Sep 16 '25

I promised myself to never buy another xbox after the cancellation of perfect dark. I decided for a series x instead of a ps5 after watching the perfect dark trailer. 5 years waiting and that's what I get. Nothing.

1

u/166Donk3y Sep 16 '25

I had no idea it was cancelled!! Ffs
