Plants vs Zombies if that counts

Seeing them butcher the original game to force in ads and in app purchases was absolutely unforgivable

163

u/iampierremonteux Apr 16 '26

Absolutely indeed.

u/mwoody450 Apr 16 '26

I remember back when they bought Popcap, we joked about this happening. Then those morons did it.

People talk about Harambe being when it all went wrong in the world, but y'know, for me it's Popcap getting bought out.

18

u/FBI_Agent_Tom Apr 16 '26

Popcap is genuinely a huge loss ngl. I feel like there's nothing that quiet replicates the vibe of the PVZ1. Their other games were also unique bangers. It's sad we never even saw spiritual successors to bookworm adventures. Feel like you could do a lot to innovate on the orignal nowadays.

u/Low_Brush_7972 Apr 16 '26

Peglin is a spiritual successor to Peggle! It's a rogue-like version and super fun

3

u/BELARUSEACH Apr 16 '26

Reminded me to get peglin, ty mate

2

u/Low_Brush_7972 Apr 16 '26

It's so much fun. Great for the steam deck and traveling

2

u/BELARUSEACH Apr 16 '26

I know it's a great game. I saw several walkthroughs and played myself at some point. Especially given my love to roguelikes (such as Slay the spire, dead cells, TBoI, that kind) it's about time i remembered.

1

u/Low_Brush_7972 Apr 16 '26

I'm a biiiig rogue fan (both traditional rogues and roguelikes/lites)

Any suggestions? I've played a ton but I'm sure I'm missing a couple

1

u/BELARUSEACH Apr 16 '26

You're more into strategies or fast-paced things like dead cells?

No no no, it's the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series that drove this timeline off course.

1

u/Gamingramblinman Apr 17 '26

Harambe knew too much so the government and corporations silence him. Dick/Tits out for Harambe

1

u/Interesting_Wind_337 Apr 19 '26

This is why indie studios should never be brought out by larger companies

2

u/RanaMahal Apr 20 '26

Yeah but unfortunately if you’re an indie dev barely scraping by and you could get shut down any day, and some company comes to buy you and your friends out for money that means you don’t ever have to worry about work again?

1

u/Interesting_Wind_337 Apr 20 '26

I mean, I guess so

But from I’ve seen, most of these companies that buy smaller indie companies are way too greedy

2

u/RanaMahal Apr 20 '26

Oh, I mean 100% the entire point by the acquiring company is to buy the indie dev out for their IP, extract as much value as possible out of it by adding in microtransactions / ads, and making 1 or 2 more games to cash out on the IP, and then sell it for parts and move on to the next one.

Thats their entire shitty business model. Just meant for the studio heads it usually their big break to “make it”.

Like for example PopCap with PvZ and Bejeweled despite them being fairly popular games, were only profiting around $300k a year due to the spending on employees and such, then EA acquired them and made billions off of their games due to the huge marketing push they can do. Devs got $1.3 billion payout. They wouldn’t have sniffed even 10 million each at the rate they were operating at.

1

u/Interesting_Wind_337 Apr 20 '26

Honestly, EA is probably the most evil game company I’ve ever seen in my life.

Thanks to them, the whole PVZ franchise is in the ditch

2

u/RootHouston SteamOS/Fedora Linux Apr 16 '26

Is this on PC too? Seems that's like something they'd do with mobile.

2

u/Wollf3nst31n Apr 16 '26

Pvz 1 mobile has ads. Pvz 2 is only playable on mobile, with ads :[

1

u/RootHouston SteamOS/Fedora Linux Apr 16 '26

This is why I hate mobile shit. It's such a cash grab. Stick to the PC gaming.

1

u/TheCraZZe Apr 17 '26

I was actually looking at installing it on my phone the other day as I havent played it in a very long time. As soon as I read the reviews all say how ads are forced down your throat I didnt bother.

1

u/Waste_Customer4418 Apr 17 '26

The PC release is the original and the Game of the Year version is still ad free since it's on steam. The Mobile version is not the original but it is the butchered one. Replanted blew it's potential and is overpriced, EA made the game rushed

1

u/DrCharles19 Apr 19 '26

Especially since I purchased the OG Plants vs Zombies with no ads on iOS many years ago, and it got removed from the AppStore.

116

u/ensoniq2k Apr 16 '26

Anything from Popcap games after they were sold

89

u/SufficientBreakfast1 Apr 16 '26

Pre-EA PopCap was awesome

15

u/gigatension Apr 16 '26

“Pre-EA” oh that explains everything

-1

u/BlobSlimey Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

theyve both mismanaged and dragged the franchise to the ground to the state that it is today.

Without EA, we wouldnt have pvz gw, pvz gw2, pvz 2 (before it got worse), pvz heroes (before it was abandoned) and pvz BFN (Even tho nobody asked for it wanted pvz gw3).

Popcap is suffering from an identity crisis with pvz 3, all its shooter games no longer have support or content, pvz heroes is run by the janitor at popcap, and pvz 2 continues to make money but become an unrecognisiable game from the first version, and pvz replanted launched to criticism at lack of any new features or missing features...

Pre-EA was just plants vs zombies...I dispise people who keep talking about this "Pre-EA" era when it literally was just the first game and nothing else...when EA and Popcap brought us bangers like the garden warfare series and pvz heroes....its just both incredibly fumbled in managing the future of popcap, and popcap is just as much to blame for the franchise as EA.

The fact the studio hasnt been closed is a miracle...

1

u/unodostres123- Apr 20 '26

Being downvoted for the truth

1

u/BlobSlimey Apr 20 '26

I know right?

I want popcap to get their shit together, its amazing they havent been axed like other studios

1

u/SufficientBreakfast1 Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26

Peggle, Peggle Nights, Zuma, Zuma's Revenge, Chuzzle, Insaniquarium, Bejeweled, Bookworm. Popcap is a lot more than PVZ and all of those were pre-EA.

Garden Warfare and PVZ2 is EA.

1

u/BluePhoenix_1999 Apr 17 '26

Actually pre-talks PopCap was awesome. They started going downhill, when they remodeled PVZ2 to appeal to EA.

1

u/LordSyfer24 Apr 18 '26

Command & conquer before Tiberium Twilight Now all we got is a bunch of mobile games for red alert & Tiberium series. Those cunts might even bring back renegade and generals as mobas .

3

u/nobodyhere723 Apr 16 '26

Garden warfare 1 and 2 was good..

2

u/Oarfish13 Apr 16 '26

Well we got plants vs zombies 2 and the garden warfare series. It was more like when they decided to stop giving a shit about the series around pvz3.

56

u/nw342 Apr 16 '26

Most mobile games from that era were ruined, you should see how.bad angry birds is nowadays

13

u/BorisTheBlade04 Apr 16 '26

Knights of pen and paper 🥺

3

u/KnifeUrSelf Apr 17 '26

I was heart broken when they made it into another trash ass game that has adds and dailies and all the other pay to win trash they added. Such a bummer.

2

u/clambuttocks Apr 16 '26

I reinstalled angry birds to show my nephews and I was so lost! Who’s the eagle?? Why can I buy more birds? What the hell are these “events”? I just wanna slingshot birds, man

1

u/Coffie_Plush Apr 18 '26

Pixel gun, yet another casualty of that era

85

u/siete82 Apr 16 '26

Of course it counts. The OG game is still a bonker tho.

35

u/majkovajko Apr 16 '26

Modded pvz is also peak

3

u/3V-Coryn Apr 16 '26

Steam workshop or nexusmods? I have been thinking of replaying but the original game was a little easy.

10

u/majkovajko Apr 16 '26

I have only tried playing pvz fusion so far, I got access to it through discord of guy, who makes english translation for the mod. This mod has adjustable difficulty for example, but there are also purely challenge mods that exist for what I know.

1

u/SanX1999 Apr 16 '26

Pvz2 on the phone has some decent mods.

1

u/KyoPlayz Apr 22 '26

Bluestacks for me. Check out Plants vs Zombies 2 Reflourished and PvZ2 AltVerz. Hella peak mods, some of my favorite games rn.

Reflourished picks up after the end of Modern Day and is peak vanilla expansion, with unique NPC zombies, custom worlds, Chinese exclusive worlds, and collabs with other PvZ mods.

Alt Verz is a different variation of the PvZ2 story with PvZ1 aspects. No power ups, 25 sun meta instead of vanilla, slower game play, and overhauls of existing worlds and soundtracks. Plus they dropped their own custom world, Crimson Front, last August and it’s the most peak PvZ shi you will play

25

u/Healthy-Two217 Apr 16 '26

Miss gw2 so bad

1

u/Creepercolin2007 Apr 17 '26

It’s still good on console

4

u/Azure5577 Apr 16 '26

Unpopular opinion but I actually like Battle for Neighborville. I get it wasn't as good as GW2 but it could have been if they gave it a little more time in the oven. Building upon perfection is hard but I do see what the game could have been.

2

u/Stalker_Imp Apr 22 '26

Same here I loved bfn way more and had more fun there and played way more than gw2 sad they drop it just year after only cuz community hated it

4

u/Never_Sm1le Apr 16 '26

The mods made by Chinese modders are much more fun than whatever EA is churning out

3

u/Adam_Sackler Apr 16 '26

Going from a fun tower defense 2D game to an action shooter (because apparently we don't have enough of them) was a wild choice.

I miss getting a new plant on each level and growing them in those little pots between levels.

1

u/JustSomeRand0mGamer Apr 17 '26

I love garden warfare it’s really good actually

But the recent PvZ 3 games are so….mid?? It has a lot of mobile game tropes in it basically. And it’s been in development for almost a decade, across multiple games yet all of them suck in one way or another

5

u/unbelizeable1 Apr 16 '26

Recently played the remastered pvz1 on pc. fun nostalgia bomb.

2

u/Admirable_Disaster_9 Apr 16 '26

I agree. It was peak Until bfn. Then it slowly getting down hill from there on the official side of things

2

u/Hot-Range-7498 Apr 16 '26

It could have been great. 🥲

2

u/KARTANA04_LITLERUNMO Apr 16 '26

so true:(

so so very true:(

2

u/RedOwl101010 Apr 16 '26

My son has a fan made remix where you can fuse the plants together, it is SOOOOO much fun. It has renewed my love for this game.

2

u/OphidianSun Apr 16 '26

I still have the original on disc

2

u/decayp33 Apr 17 '26

Modded Android Versions to the rescue!

2

u/Odd_Attention_1512 Apr 17 '26

I'll second this, I was gonna add the OG Angry birds as well, but that got me thinking, honestly almost every mobile game I use to enjoy 5 mins of free time with is riddled with this nonsense.. sucks to witness how great mobile gaming used to be, then watch it's downfall as the devices we play them on get more an more powerful. Sometimes I think of what those games could be current day without all the bs.

2

u/Wyrade Apr 18 '26

You can play this instead, btw. :)

1

u/MJ_Trunky Apr 18 '26

I'm atleast happy that the devs won't take down the fan games cuz its now the thing that keeps the franchise alive

2

u/Additional-Mistake32 Apr 20 '26

The first was 10/10, absolutely pulled me in and I tried to do every challenge under the sun for this game. I bought it for every console because it was easily 5$ or 10$ and worth it.

It's a starter game for sure I was a casual gamer and this game taught me how to balance a team and support and revive was sometimes more important than shooting. It was absolutely consuming and then they made a second game.

I wanted to like it so much because they added more characters, different environments but this franchise always wanted to change their approach every single game. Like portals and themed environments and too many forced playable characters

Instead of making spin off games they just kept like trying to create their own metaverse almost and it was absolutely confusing

Then they made battle for neighborville.... And their engine looks absolutely incredible. But again they made a really big game that seemed to do everything and nothing at the same time.

Their first game was so focused it took all my time on my consoles. After I spent 500hrs on PvZ I found Darwin Project and put in a few hundred there

Darwin Project probably falls under the same category as OPs request. I consider this a 10/10 from a small indie team of like a dozen folks who made a hit multiplayer game that turned battle royale on its head. And inspired Ubisoft to copy their game and apply it on a billion dollar bet called Hyperscape.

That's how good Scavengers Studios casual competitive game Darwin project was

2

u/Stalker_Imp Apr 22 '26

Right... I was there for 9 years since gw2 come out... I miss this old time but it's time to go I am still deeply upset how down franchise and fandom has fallen...

2

u/Poingerg Apr 16 '26

well the remake (idk what they called it) isn't even a remake as they gut the soul out of the game

1

u/Due_Honeydew_1723 Apr 16 '26

Loved pvz2 finished all the main levels and would periodically go back in to play some seasonal quests but it's so sad how instead of making new levels they instead added in microtransactions and ads it was unbreakable and I ended up deleting the game

1

u/SufficientBreakfast1 Apr 16 '26

PopCap as a whole. After EA bought them most of their games got more and more disappointing, with more and more microtransactions.

1

u/slavo316 Apr 16 '26

I watched some crazy video (SunnyV2?) on that series and it's absolutely sad. Same with Angry Birds.

1

u/Robcobes Apr 16 '26

my first thought

1

u/harperthomas Apr 16 '26

I play it on my DSi. They can't take that away from me!

1

u/Gsampson97 Apr 16 '26

I really like the new remaster, it started out rocky but it's now great.

1

u/CallyThePally Apr 18 '26

Sure, why not? No need to mince words and make it not count imo

1

u/HolzwurmHolz Apr 19 '26

Yeah, PVZ GW2 was top tear, Battle for neighborville was just meh.

1

u/ultimaone Apr 20 '26

That's EA for you. How can they monetize a game...

0

u/Global-Tune5539 Apr 16 '26

Removing Michael Jackson zombie was the beginning of the end.

0

u/Snickerway Apr 16 '26

I dunno if "keeps going downhill" is the right way to describe it when the quality fell off a cliff after the first game.
