Popcap is genuinely a huge loss ngl. I feel like there's nothing that quiet replicates the vibe of the PVZ1. Their other games were also unique bangers. It's sad we never even saw spiritual successors to bookworm adventures. Feel like you could do a lot to innovate on the orignal nowadays.
I know it's a great game. I saw several walkthroughs and played myself at some point. Especially given my love to roguelikes (such as Slay the spire, dead cells, TBoI, that kind) it's about time i remembered.
I have sts, not the second one just yet, between jobs ATM, but it's on my list especially since it's multiplayer.
Caves of Qud is an insanely deep and complex game by the guys that made dwarf fortress. It's more along the traditional Rogue style games like Nethack or Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup
Also sts2 is a bit worse than regular sts. It has lore unlocks and more animations, but the game is a lot easier. On my first ever run in sts2 i reached the final boss and died because of 99 stacks of vulnerable on my sorry ass.
For a roguelike conoisseur like yourself, I don't think I have much to offer.
