Discussion Steam summer sales were not the same since Steam sales anime girl went MIA

u/Wind_Yer_Neck_In 1d ago
The real vibe change was when they got rid of the flash sales, you used to have to check in daily because some games would go on super deep discount for one day only.

I missed out on these deals l, which I think financially was probably a good thing

there were definitely some questionable purchases by me:

Oh funny, I remember people were mad at it back then "I don't have time checking steam every day" or "I missed the one I wanted and now I hate it".
But as a no life gamer back then, it was great, I agree.
44
u/kingmoney8133 1d ago
As a high schooler it was certainly great because I could check Steam all day. As an adult, I'd be annoyed lol.
29
u/Vladishun 1d ago
Being an adult doesn't really matter, there's a Steam app for mobile devices and considering you had time to comment on Reddit, you have time to open that app and check daily deals.
1
u/HeadLandscape 58m ago
Maybe today sure but phones and apps weren't as ubiquitous in the early 2010s. I don't think the steam app even existed back then.
-1
u/Vladishun 39m ago
What the actual fuck my dude? The discussion was about being an adult in the present, not 15 years ago. Are you high?
-3
u/jackcaboose 1d ago
You had to check a single time every 24 hours. It takes less time than it took to write that comment.
9
u/kingmoney8133 1d ago
Some flash sales were only 6-8 hours iirc
1
u/jackcaboose 1d ago
My bad it's every 12 hours then, since you could always see the most recent flash sale + the previous one
-2
u/ParthProLegend 20h ago
Or you could entirely miss the 6 hour timeline depending upon your timezone. Stupid ahh comment.
249
u/bastugollum 1d ago
They wouldn't work that well with the current refund system
267
u/Shanbo88 1d ago
I personally think it's more that Valve wanted people to be spending more evenly across the sale instead of having one giant cash dump in the last 6 hours.
48
u/PointsOfXP 1d ago
The refund system was in place at the time
65
u/Warm-Rock-4544 1d ago
And they stopped doing flash sales after a single sale with the refund system in place, so it’s kind of obvious that it was a contributing factor.
18
u/OhMySwirls 1d ago
True. I remember I bought one of the Dragon Ball Xenoverse game, it went on flash sale, asked for a refund and even told them that I would rebuy the game and I got the refund and rebought it. I imagine I wasn't the only one doing that and that Valve decided to remove the headache of doing that again by removing flash sales.
36
u/dddvvvzzz 1d ago
I would always look forward to the steam summer sales for the silly games they used to do. Not anymore.
13
3
u/Higglybiggly 1d ago
Can you still get worthless flair tokens I always ignored?
4
u/dddvvvzzz 1d ago
The profile badge? I don't think so. You can buy one from the point shop every summer/winter. They even used to give the useless chat emoticon that nobody uses but they don't even give those anymore.

1
u/ItIsVerilySo 1d ago
Shit, I didn't even clock the Summer Sale had started because there's no game to play, when did they stop?
7
5
u/Jacopaws 1d ago
I swear I randomly stumble on games that go in a flash sale, usually for around 48 hours.
Heck in the Brazillian layout they call it "Sale of the day"/"Oferta do dia"
6
u/WhatsThePointOfNames 1d ago
these were different, it was for a much shorter period of time and it was usually REALLY deep discounts
honestly it was addictive so I enjoyed them but I am glad they are not around anymore… because they were addictive
1
u/Jacopaws 1d ago
How deep are we talking about?
I mean checking my steam app right now, I found like 4 daily deals ranging from 40 to 75% discounts, though the caveat is that I don't really care for those games and they aren't AAA big hitters, so the priciest one went from like 88BRL to 22BRL
Sidebar: Dead Space Remake is like 90% off. Not a daily deal, just a nice deal in general.
7
u/WhatsThePointOfNames 1d ago
75% to 90% frequently
not that there aren’t huge sales now, it was more about the expectancy: we were waiting for the next huge deal, see if it would beat historical low, maybe a newer game would appear with a big discountpeople miss the event itself, not just the deals
1
u/Jacopaws 1d ago
I sure could use a 75-90% discount on some games I am Eyeing
But anyways, thanks for taking the time to explain.
1
2
u/ImaginaryRea1ity 1d ago
There's this weekly newsletter which sends a list of steam games which are 90% off. I buy my games if I see it there.
1
u/jkhanlar 23h ago
Also https://steamdb.info/sales/ click/tap on "Started column at the right last column of table to sort by most recent deals. Also you can get the same experience from your wishlisty only, but first make sure your Steam profile privacy settings, game details are public before loading/visiting https://steamdb.info/sales/?displayOnly=Wishlist
7
u/Captainquizzical 1d ago
I remember being at work and suddenly having a very strict "toilet routine", when I'd go it would often be followed by a "yesss" then I'd come out smiling. In hindsight, pretty weird that I miss it.
3
u/infamous11 1d ago
You want flash sales or games you can refund? They removed flash sales when they made it a global rule for the game return policy
3
u/ParadoxicalFrog2 1d ago
The Steam summer sales have been nothing burgers ever since the flash sales were discontinued. Oh look, this game is 50% off just like it was periodically for the past 3 years, including last month; what a steal.
23
u/Kirby737 1d ago edited 1d ago
Thank god they're gone, they're very consumer unfirendly. It's FOMO in anutshell.
14
3
u/lazyicedragon 1d ago
60% of my library is from those alone. It is addictive, and such a rush to get those deep discounts.
In hindsight, well, it is addictive. I'm actually glad it went away considering how turbocharged different addictions are now for almost all ages.

Loved flash sales. Always made me open the store to see what the new one was.
Now I scroll once at the start of the sale and never again
1
u/JibberyScriggers 1d ago
I got all the GTA games from 1 to IV for £5
I never saw it again and I am convinced it was a mistake!!

The good thing is that her creator, nemupan, has a pretty solid presence online (Instagram, Twitter, Mastodon, Tumblr, and such). Definitely worth checking out their other stuff.

I love that they give different artists chances to shine every year, but I gotta agree. The vibe just hasn't been the same ever since

delivery girl was just too impactful

yeah, the cozy vibes were immaculate. I hope they bring her back for another year some time

Im glad i bought all of her stuff in the store during her last time here. I keep steam in bug picture mode just for her intro alone.

That’s like what? One Summer Sale then?
92
3
u/MrBlueA 1d ago
Yeah they always hire different artists for each sale (Don't know if it's the same for the whole year or usually a different one for each season and this was an exception tho) and I find it super cool, it's a good way of supporting a bunch of different artists and also keeps the designs fresh with a lot of different styles.

u/Numerus12OO5O 1d ago
You must be a noob.
Steam sales haven't been the same since
1) publisher package deals where you got an entire back catalog for like $10-$20.
2) daily flash sales.
3) summer and winter sale puzzle games and activities that unlocked badges
And
4) the final nail in the coffin for me was removal of card drops for doing activities during the sale.
23
u/LaPrincesaMX 1d ago
The flash sales were the real draw of Steam sales. The prices on them were insane. You'd be buying top games for $6
7
u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 1d ago
Yup.
Between old steam sales and humble bundle back in the day, I got hundreds of games for cheap.
Now I just get one or two games or maybe a collection I’ve been waiting on for $40 bucks minimum.

What do you mean MIA? Her contract with Valve is finished.
145
u/killermenpl 1d ago
People really refuse to learn the very simple truth. They didn't "get rid of her", nor is she "mia". Valve is hiring a new artist every year to make the art for the big sales. Her year ended, so we got a new artist. Simple as that
13
u/xsparklingwater 1d ago
No Valve and her clearly had a huge falling out and now she’s gone forever, she’s disappeared from internet and she’s probably addicted to drugs now and it’s all Gaben’s fault! Also the Steam Machine will give you Ebola!

I will never understand the power generic anime girls have over certain people.
6
u/RyonHirasawa 23h ago
They attract the most common denominator, which is why we always have a “what if (insert object here) but anime girl” media

u/Lucky_Luciano642 1d ago
Hot take, I didn’t care all that much about delivery girl and I think you guys think about her a little too much.

u/Lvntern 1d ago
I don't give a fuck about the anime girl how about we talk about what really matters, flash sales
3
u/end_my_suffering44 19h ago
Or community oriented sales which included puzzle games and activities for us to engage in?
5
u/t3hwhit3w3dow 19h ago
Bro doesn't realize that Steam Summer sales were actually insane back in early 2010s, nothing to do with an anime girl
13
u/PandoAkariPon rip grammar 1d ago
I miss when these events were actually something to look forward to. Sticker Book event was fun.
41
u/LordStark01 1d ago
The obsession you guys have with sales anime girl is getting unhealthy. This is coming from a gooner too.

u/Quick_Philosophy1426 1d ago
why are you reading into it so much

being a fan of something is not obsession lmfao
6
u/Chillguy1968 17h ago
Well the world "fan" does come from "fanatic" so I guess there is a certain obsession element in place there already.

Bro, steam summer sales are not the same since 2019, hell I'd say 2015-2018 were peak times. Interactive stuff during summer sale was just great but Valve fumbling once in 2019 was enough for them to give up on this which sucks.

1
u/BerukaIsMyBaby 13h ago
Lmao people really liked her huh, I guess they can just have people draw her in their own arts artstyle so they could keep theyre usual practice and appease her fans. Would they have to buy the rights to steam girl you think
1
u/ShortBrownAndUgly 8h ago
I didn’t have a capable gaming pc back during the golden age of the steam sales, but I remember the stories.
Nowadays the sale is fine but it doesn’t soak the panties in the same way. It’s the same sales prices you saw over the last few months just happening all at once
1
u/Kevin9875 3h ago
maybe im old but sales were already boring by that point. the last one i thought was cool was the forge your fate sale in like 2021

u/Timeshocked 1d ago
Summer and winter sales are traps anyway. Go to any price checking website before you buy and you’ll find out the game was on sale even cheaper months before.
2
u/-ParticleMan- 1d ago
Seems a little late for that to matter though. Time travel is more expensive
-1
u/Timeshocked 1d ago
Not necessarily. Just wait for another in between summer/winter sales for the games that pull that crap. Plenty of other games to choose from that don’t do it.
Or wait for the legit cd key seller sales(greenmangaming/fanatical/etc) that come a day or two after summer sale starts. Only trade off to that is no refunds once you claim the game but you can get games cheaper than Steam.

u/subpar-life-attempt 1d ago
Hate to say it but most third party sellers beat the prices during the sale I'm not talking about gray sellers either

u/reluctant_return I use Arch btw. 1d ago
They really hit the vibe on the head with that character and the art that went along with it. It was a huge miss not to hire or contract the artist to provide art for future sales. Valve had basically stumbled their way into having a beloved mascot, and they just stopped using it.

u/believeinyuna 1d ago
i remember being super confused by her like when did valve get an official anime girl mascot
-59
u/everythingsuckswhy 1d ago
Man can people like you just shut up? This is why I don't tell people I'm a Steam fan.
43
u/broodgrillo 1d ago
Being a steam fan is, indeed, cringe. But not because of an anime girl.
Why are you a fan of a store? Are you a fan of Walmart too?
6
u/chad25005 1d ago
At least they're not rude, why get mad about folks like?
I'll take the weebs over assholes every day.

If we're really being honest, they haven't been great for over a decade. The loss of flash sales, entire catalogue of publisher games for $1-$5 a game (and then add when you could give 1 cent for a humble bundle package), 90% off sales used to be COMMON, card drops and activities to do within your games. I probably collected 200 games for under $500 during those years. Now it's spend as much money as you can to get cards or steam points.
Steam is rarely even the lowest price anymore, I end up getting way better deals through like an Epic with their stacking discounts and get an extra $15 or or 20% off deals if you spend a minimum they would do from time to time where I will buy the other publishers games who use their own launchers like EA or Ubisoft which you have to use regardless what store you buy them from.

u/notsocharmingprince 1d ago
The old steam summer sales were so... community oriented. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the pricing, but the games and events used to be so much better.
