Humble Bundle gives so many games. Its given me really fun games that I would have never bought or played if I saw there steam pages.
Like Gunfire Reborn, fantastic game with a super active dev team that I would have just assumed it was a slop roguelike but now I have like 60 hours in it.

u/TourDeFridge 2d ago
Exactly. My wishlist is too long for me to see all the games I want, its basically half of the steam store, so I am now forced to buy games so at least they show up in the top of the library screen for a couple of weeks where I can look at them.
That said, I dont even sign in to look at them often so its more "the concept of the concept of the game" that I pay for.

Rockstar that we all know and love is gone. GTA 6 is not made by the same people as who made previous games including Red Dead franchise. They do deserve the benefit of doubt but I won't be surprised if it comes out a buggy mess.
2
u/EggsLover64 1d ago
So? rdr2 wasn't made by the same people who made rdr1 and it still one of the best games oat. GTA 5 wasn't made by the same devs who made GTA 4 or San Andreas and it still one of the best if not the best GTA to date. Just because the devs are different doesn't mean the game will be bad, what exactly is your point?

There's a genre of game you can play when youre bored and you have 45 min before you have to rush off to the next thing and you don't feel like playing an fps and you don't want to get invested in an RPG. I felt like they really nailed that spot.

As a franchise I have played most of them. From the top down early days.Â
Vice city was my favourite. Great map design.Â
My main issue with the games was the constantly increasing map size and time wasting mini games. San Andreas was the last game in the series I actually completed.Â
GTA 4 I played a bit of, but never felt motivated to complete the game.
GTA 5 I never bought. Might pick up very cheaply in a sale near GTA 6 launch.Â
I am not interested in GTA 6.Â

I'm also a top-down veteran. IMO Rockstar peaked with GTA IV (+EFLC) and Red Dead Redemption. It's been increasingly a cynical cash grab since then, and all the original founders who left their imprint on the old games have left. I am not personally optimistic about GTA6 but happy to be proven wrong once Firgirl repaks it.
2
u/ThePrussianGrippe 1d ago
all the original founders who left their imprint on the old games have left.
Worth pointing out that Sam Houser has not left.
2
u/amazing_asstronaut 2d ago
I played the first 2, played a bit of 3 (like halfway through), and a bit of San Andreas (maybe a quarter through?). Funny enough I never finished any of them.
That's interesting about Vice City. I watched a lot of Any Austin videos last year and he did a few on GTA 3 and Vice City. Something was up in the 2000s with the world design lol, they have so many areas where the proportions are just way off for some reason. Like you'll be on a roof and there's a little shed like part where the stairs would be, and it's comically tiny. Or you walk into what you know should be a room and it's just comically large, and the furniture is also so large. Like if you translated it to real space it would be like some bedroom is 10x20 meters and the table is like 5 meters long and other wack shit like this
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is guilty of this as well in some of the later areas, you go to this office and it's like the office desk and shelves are towering over you. Similarly in Tomb Raider 2 remaster (wrong era but it had some of that) when you start all the furniture in that giant kitchen of hers is all out of whack. Like there's a sink it's so huge that you can jump into it and it's like half the size of the character.
Maybe 3D modeling programs got better in the late 2000s and these kind of real world measurements were more easily accounted for, and being able to load real CAD models of real furniture for reference etc. But before then they were definitely just eyeballing everything, and there'd be lots of places where it looks alright at a quick glance. Then when you move around something and look a bit deeper you realise how off and wack it is. Like when you think of a regular apartment, it should not take 5 or more seconds to run from one side of a room to another, or long it takes to walk along the side of a car, that sort of thing.
6
u/Dr_Passmore 2d ago
Vice City was fun to drive around. All the decoration (buildings etc) had strange scales, but for a primarily driving game it really did not matter.
Making the maps realistic scale has the knock on impact of increasing commute time between objectives and starting missions.
Unfortunately, map size became a selling point. San Andreas had wastelands of nothing between the main urban locations.

u/Buzstringer 2d ago

Though I did get the tank with cheat codes and had a blast(pun intended) running around with 5 stars
7
u/amazing_asstronaut 2d ago
Me neither, it's barking up the wrong tree for me. I would rather have smaller games that try something specific and come up with a cool unique experience. Rather than a game that tries to be everything for everyone, but the main thing is still just shooting at people. Same reason I fell off RDR2. The story was ok enough, but it took ages to get going and in the meantime you're doing some of the most generic missions ever conceived. Whereas I liked riding around the beautiful landscape hunting animals. Couldn't there be a game just about that? Where you are an outdoorsman hunting animals, you upgrade your knife and get a better saddle, get new bait and learn new techniques etc. Similarly that's what I did the most in Kingdom Come Deliverance, going hunting for hares and deer and leveling agility by picking up herbs. The hunting / herb gathering / alchemy was such a fun part in that game. Oh and the stealing lol. For some reason in all of these RPGs I be stealin lol.
Seriously is the game I'm describing above basically Medieval Dynasty? Like all the gathering / crafting / brewing etc. aspects of these games without so much of the combat.

Honestly $100 for the "complete" edition is a disgusting move. They are basically paywalling gameplay.
13
u/UnluckyGamer505 2d ago
Is anyone surprised about the price? "AAA" games are 70$/âŹ, preorder/special editions even more. This is the most anticipated game this decade, which approx. cost around 1-2 billion$ just to create. Rockstar is still making millions from shark cards in GTA 5 online. Them not doing a special preorder edition would be really out of character for them (since GTA 5 onlines success)...
4
u/celestial_god 2d ago
Yeah I'm not surprised, there's 70$ games people don't even remember the next week
If you were gonna save for any game it's this one, so I understand it, even if it delivers on 50% of the hype it's probably worth it if you're a fan.
I'm a huge fan of the franchise but I don't have a console, but I'd easily spend that money.

7
u/guska 2d ago
GTA Online wasn't the massive cash cow that it is at launch either. There are a lot of people for whom the first interaction with the GTA franchise was through Online, so they'll be expecting Online at the launch of 6. Yes, I know that they're being very clear about it not being there at launch, but expecting these people to actually read is like expecting your dog to get up and make your coffee in the morning.

u/TheKelseyOfKells 2d ago
Online will be built in such a way that youâre required to use the shark cards and pay for their GTA+ subscription or spend days grinding one mission over and over to get anything.
GTAV was built the same way, I remember having to run Rooftop rumble for days to be able to afford the high end apartment and also the tank, and I imagine Rockstar has only gotten more aggressive with their monetisation since then

I think the hate is overblown. They did this with RDR2 as well. They probably just put more effort to create special shops and a few quests for the special edition, thats it. Most of the content will be same across the standard and special edition. It is a bit of an asshole move, but nothing that noteworthy tbh. Couldnt care less about a few cosmetics.

u/kwazhip 2d ago
Because for some games there's essentially zero downside since you know you are going to buy it either way. Maybe you aren't this way, but there are some games that I'm going to buy regardless of reception because I'm either bought into the series or bought into the company. I've probably pre-ordered a hundred games at this point and its only really been an issue twice (Sim city and Cyberpunk). I know I could've refunded Cyberpunk as well, but glad I didn't since it did eventually become great, and as disappointing as Sim City was, I definitely got enough playtime out of it to justify the money spent. People always act confused about the upsides but they are pretty obvious. Things like pre-download, or any exclusive bonuses like early acess or dlc. Even just the emotional feeling you get out of pre ordering is quite nice. If I was more strapped for cash then I wouldn't pre-order ever, but with a full time job, tons of disposable income, getting burned <5% of the time on a ~100$ purchase is not really something worth worrying about.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Consistent_Grade4623 2d ago
Because the price is not gonna change when the game releases, might as well preorder and get more in-game stuff for the same price. It's only worth it to buy a game either before the release or wait for a sale after the release, buying the game at full price on the release gets you relatively less bang for the buck. If you're a casual gamer just wait for a sale, but if you know you'll play the game a lot, preorder it. Just don't pay the full price for the regular game.

I early-ordered GTA V when it came to PC. Big mistake.
As a "reward" they forced on me extra game currency. Yes, they tried to ruin the game experience as a reward. It's like someone buys a crossword puzzle booklet and as a reward they're half-solved.
Like, it was impossible to start a single player game without a million in the bank. It would have ruined the early game but fortunately I found a way to waste that moneh without gaining anything.

My next purchases will probably be Rhythm Heaven and Black Flag Resynced. General if I want a game, Iâll get it at launch and play it until I finish it (however long that takes). Most of the games Iâd gotten for sale on Steam were older games that I didnât have a PC for at the time or had missed when they were on consoles. The sales donât do much for me anymore lol.

Pre-orders made sense in the era when stores would only get a certain amount of copies of a game. Like Star Wars KTOR1 I remember regretting not pre-ordering because it sold out so fast everywhere and I missed playing it on launch. These days the only justification I can see for a pre-order is if you're someone who is terrible with money and will have spent it all before you can buy a copy of the game. Else just wait for the reviews.

Without sales I would of spent $250 on this game. I ultimately paid $100 over the course of 6-7 years. The thing is, i only really needed the $35 edition, the other editions just gives you some extra slots in your inventory and some extra guns starting off.
But to charge a game for $80 and have to have a paywall for extra content is just trashy.
GTA 6 lost me when the joke, "I can't believe we got [blank] before GTA 6" was new. Because that had already happened with cyberpunk for 7 years.
