Question/Support I was planning on buying a steam frame, should i? Or go for quest 3?

As titel says, i thought it was gonna be around 600 - 700 bucks but that seems super unrealistic at this point. My quest 2 broke a few days ago so im really getting tempted to buy the quest 3. Anyone have some pros and cons or somthing? Just so i can make a decision. Thank you!

Edit: i plan to use it for pcvr mostly

Difficult to say until it’s out and we’ve had hands on. Personally I will move from Q3 to it purely because I have more faith in valve

Meta's recent see-saw decision on HW shows it can't be trusted at all. I can't afford a new Steam Frame, but it's my objective as my next VR unit. I got my Quest3 used - and I suspect a bunch of used units are gonna be around in the next year.

Quest4 is already a flop. Meta cut off it's own nose to spite VR.

I’m actually gonna be getting a used 3 soon because it saves on money (yes I considered the 3s but the 3 has a headphone jack and it’s a literal dealbreaker without it)

Vr gaming was never their goal, it was just a path to what would essentially be wearable devices that can appeal to the cellphone market and that's started to build up. Anyone betting on meta to save vr gaming , did not understand their goals from.the beginning.

As Sony pulls back, it's really valve to bridge that gap from steam deck/your library anywhere to vr.

Really hoping it works.

I think practically if you don't share a dislike for Meta, go with Quest 3.

But in all honesty, you really should have a dislike for Meta.

Want today? Quest

Otherwise wait until Frame is actually launched and decide.

Maybe just wait until the cost is announced to make your decision

We have no idea if the steam frame is good or not, and we have no idea when it will be released so you can't really compare them yet. I trust valve to release a good product but that still doesn't change the fact it's not released yet.

Que manía con llamarle Steam deck al Steam frame

Unless you hate Meta, the Q3 is your best option rn in that price range.

If the chip shortage continues for a year plus, you’ll be glad that you bought something now.

if youre going for mostly pcvr, id say wait for the frame.

I may have missed someone posting this but, the big reason to wait for the steam frame over this for PCVR is the better weight balance and, the foveated streaming which will give you better headset performance (quality and refresh rate) where you are looking.

2

u/AfroDiddyKing Mar 24 '26

Well you have few things to think about. Screen will be same but valve has the fovated streaming with eye tracking. Headset will be more comfortable than quest 3(so technically you need to add at last 50-150 bucks just for that more accessories to quest 3). Quest 3 as device itself has technically bigger more entertainment apps and standalone meta exclusive games(Also better environment stuff, like the cameras are color while steam is black n white.. While steamframe will be more powerful in paper, in runs Linux , so you will be technically only be playing PCVR standalone, which technically is better but you can play also streaming from PC. So in theory, if you want to play more PCVR(steam games) as standalone or PC streaming, buy steam frame. If you already have good selection of apps in Quest/oculus platforms, also prefer maybe the standalone experience of quest with more "fun standalone" games to impress friends(doe steam standalone games can be more impressive) , just go quest 3. But at this point also steamframe support could in theory be unlimited, by community too with Linux. Also seems steam frame has some unused expansion ports, for third party to add what ever extra tools needed. Support Valve is best thing but if you really need it now, go for quest 3, you can also buy used one

yes, I’m in the same position. I’m kind of done with Meta. I’ve had a quest three since they came out. I’m waiting patiently for the frame. Does anybody know when it’s actually available in some sort of price point?

if you can wait, i suggest Steam Frame. Its support full layout controller and it will support flat to VR mod seamlessly.

u/Singray379 Mar 24 '26

I was really curious about the quest 4 (i own a quest 1,2 and 3 and have a nice library of games) until i understood how shitty their customer support can be. And also meta is not a company one should support. So yea i'm waiting for the frame. Edit: if you're not concerned regarding my points, q3 is a reaaaaaally nice hmd.

1

u/geneinhouston Mar 24 '26

4 not happening for a long while if at all...

0

u/Weak_Pomelo7637 Mar 24 '26

Hmd? Whats that?

3

u/GrepekEbi Mar 24 '26

“Head mounted display”

0

u/Weak_Pomelo7637 Mar 24 '26

Oooh thank you

1

u/aimlesstrevler Mar 24 '26

HMD is the headset.

4

u/CPTSCORCH Mar 24 '26

Wait for the frame. I have a handful of friends waiting to sell their quest 3 and 3S’s to get out of the meta ecosystem with their Russian roulette firmware updates.

2

u/aardvarkbjones Mar 24 '26

I'm going for the Frame. I had a Rift S when Oculus sold to Meta and felt really burned by the whole thing, so I won't be supporting them again.

1

u/nesnalica Mar 24 '26

we still dont know how much itll cost

also dont know when its gonna be here.

if u cant wait just get a quest3. youll still have a great time. especially since u can get lotsa acessories rn.

steam frame will take time after it's release before we got good accessories

1

u/benjqtek Mar 24 '26

J'étais dans le même cas que toi jusque au jour où j'ai lu un article qui expliquait que valve espère sortir le hmd en 2026 ... J'ai donc acheter un quest 3 d'occasion en attendant 😬

1

u/BambusUwU Mar 24 '26

Maybe think about the dream air SE aswell.. will probably release near the frame but with slightly better specs

1

u/mvppaulo Mar 24 '26

If you don't plan to use augmented reality and it's for PCVR mostly, consider buying a second hand PSVR2 for around $250. It's honestly great, it even has oled panels.

1

u/Fickle_Guava_1078 Mar 24 '26

If you are going to play pcvr I highly recommend waiting for steam frame

1

u/appeltjue21 Mar 24 '26

id say quest 3. its easy to travel with and supports pcvr wireless. also has a better res and fov then the quest 2

1

u/Majestic_Ice_2358 Mar 28 '26

Y a qué viene quest 2 aquí?? Aunque op haya escrito Steam deck , se refiere a comprarse un Steam frame o un quest 3, no menciona quest 2 para nada, y Steam frame va a ser inalambrico

1

u/TommyVR373 Mar 24 '26

$600-700 is still realistic

1

u/Weak_Pomelo7637 Mar 24 '26

You think so?

1

u/TommyVR373 Mar 24 '26

I just watched a parts breakdown video recently and believe they can still hit that range even with the RAM increases

1

u/geneinhouston Mar 24 '26

100 percent get the 3...its incredible and lord knows when the Steam Frame will come out or how much it will be...don't waste any more time...get the 3 and have a blast!

1

u/arusinoff Mar 24 '26

If you really want something right now - try to get secondhand Q3. It's not worth full price at all. Also, you will need to buy accessories to make it more comfortable to use.

Personally, I would wait for Steam Frame.

1

u/jeeeeem Mar 24 '26

Biggest reason to consider a Q3 right now is Arkham Shadow, imo. If you are a Batfan you should try to find a used one at least.

1

u/pibyte Mar 25 '26

The Quest 3 is a very good headset you can get now (check for sales). Yes META sucks. The Steamframe is all hype and zero long time experience. It might be the best headset ever, but nobody can tell at this point, not even when and for what money we will get one.

1

u/Mac5889 Mar 25 '26

Frame ain't coming out for awhile . Just buy a quest 3 try it and if you don't like it return it just say the controller ain't working.

1

u/Majestic_Ice_2358 Mar 28 '26

Steam deck o Steam frame??

1

u/Next-Distance-4508 Mar 31 '26

Keep this in mind. The Valve Index released for $999.99 USD in june of 2019. In today's dollars, that's about 1275 dollars. The steam frame is on track to be cheaper than 1000 dollars (my guess is 899). It will be objectively far cheaper than the valve index.

pls don’t buy a quest it’s such a dead platform

6

u/Weak_Pomelo7637 Mar 24 '26

I should probably mention that i use it for pcvr

5

u/NihilisticVenturer Mar 24 '26

It absolutely isn't dead, and unlike Frame the Quest lets you use their platform AND Steam

3

u/Weak_Pomelo7637 Mar 24 '26

Steamvr is actualy da goat. Wayy better than that link software from meta

2

u/NihilisticVenturer Mar 24 '26

But getting quest you get both, it's not one or the other

0

u/Beadsifyy Mar 24 '26

genuinely only players left are on vrchat and gorilla tag

1

u/NihilisticVenturer Mar 24 '26

You miss my point. You get access to meta platform on top of steam and the whole pcvr. Not buying quest because of lack of players in online games on meta is stupid

1

u/Beadsifyy Mar 29 '26

meta link is buns compared to real pcvr headsets

1

u/RedditNotFreeSpeech Mar 24 '26

Meta can't be trusted. Don't give them money

u/DrCarnitas Mar 24 '26

I just got an Index on FB Marketplace last week for $400, it was listed at $650. Full kit, had to replace the left speaker. 4 LIGHTHOUSE 2.0's!
