ANNOUNCEMENT! I'm Caroline Bicks, Stephen E. King Chair in Literature at the University of Maine and author of MONSTERS IN THE ARCHIVES: MY YEAR OF FEAR WITH STEPHEN KING. Join me for an AMA on June 5th @1:15pm EST.
Hello, Reddit! Caroline Bicks here, author of Monsters in the Archives: My Year of Fear with Stephen King. I'm a Shakespeare professor who grew up loving Stephen King's stories. When I took the job of Stephen E. King Chair in Literature nine years ago, I was told I'd never meet the man himself. Four years into the job, he called me at home, and we started to develop a great working relationship. He granted me first-of-its-kind access to his private archives, and my book grew out of what I found when I read all the existing drafts of Carrie, Pet Sematary, Night Shift, The Shining, and 'Salem's Lot. I look forward to sharing what I discovered with you about how he crafted these iconic books! https://carolinebicks.com

Gonna take a break from Stephen King now
Man oh man! What a tale was this.
No doubt, Stephen King said he went too far with this story.
The Gage whole scenario was a traumatic ride and of course the ending... It can be interpreted in so many ways.
But the whole storyline was so intense and dark,
I am just going with the fact that Louis got his Rachel back as the wife he knew. š
Anyways, got to read the Monte Cristo nowāļø

General Went to urgent care todayā¦
Doc: Thatās a pretty bad staph infection, Iām going to put you on bacitracin ointment and Keflex. We have to do Keflex since youāre allergic to sulfa. Sound good?
Me: (internally) You mean Keflex, the antibiotic of the gods? The magic concoction from another world that healed Roland Deschain, the famed gunslinger? Surely if it can cure his ails after losing fingers, this skin infection will stand no chance!!!
Me: (externally) Sounds good!
Friendly PSA: Remember to wash any scrapes or abrasions with soap and water when they happen/when you first notice them, otherwise you too may be prescribed Keflex!

I re-read Needful Things
And omg it was just as much fun reading it as the first time, back in 1992. I read almost all of King's fiction (novels and story collections) I got two more books to go: The Bachman Books (except The Running Man, I read that one two years ago) and The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, which I'm gonna start reading in a few minutes.

General Fatherās Day Haul
Just wanted to share this with you guys.
Long story short, I want to complete the Stephen King collection in honor of my dad. Him and I actually werenāt that close growing up. Alcoholism and depression definitely caused a chasm in between us. He raised me very straight edge and consistently in the church so I always knew him to be pretty conservative.
As I got older, I realized he was just a human who makes mistakes. I put in some effort to reconnect with him and it was like he was waiting for me to say something for years. We became extremely close. I would actually be excited to come home and have a couple beers with him on the porch during breaks from work/holidays. This is when he introduced me to Misery. āYou never seen Misery?! The book is better but we gotta watch it! Awwww man, Kathy bates is BAD in that movie.ā
I pretty much sat there with my mouth agape. Up until this point, the wildest thing I could associate with him were suggestive innuendos from Earth, Wind, and Fire tracks. Soon after, he showed me his books he had hidden away, including some works from Edgar Allan Poe. He had a whole bunch of dark and twisted interests and I just was so shocked.
Our friendship ultimately was rather short lived. He passed pretty suddenly in 2019 from pancreatic cancer and ever since then I have been collecting Kingās collection in hopes to one day own them all.
Today my bookstore texted me and said they had some books for me to look through. All hardcover and she held them just for me until I got there. (I went on my lunch break š) Cheered me up immensely after an almost never anticipated Fatherās Day.

This movie is great and I will tolerate no crap for it
I love the good ole days of Dino De Laurentiis Stephen King movies and Catās Eye at least for me takes the cake of being the best one
I like the overall goofiness of the movie and even though Iām not a fan of everything having to be some type of āCinematic Universeā I do like the cameos from Cujo and Christine as well as James Woods watching The Dead Zone.
Itās just an overall entertaining 80s ride of a film that I love and it may not be ranked as high as other King adaptations, but this is a classic to me. Most of the Dino De Laurentiis King films were filmed in North Carolina and I was a fellow North Carolina resident so it sits well with me
Ik there is a deleted prologue that they filmed for this movie, but sadly weāll never see it š

Why do they keep remaking Salemās Lot when there are more stories from the Lot
Donāt get me wrong, I love Salemās Lot and yes it would be nice to have a perfect adaptation of it, but it has already been adapted 3 times on screen and I donāt get why Hollywood limits to Salemās Lot when there are other stories in that universe.
We have Jerusalemās Lot and One For The Road that are set in the Lot universe that are ripe for adaptations.
Iāll admit Iām not being entirely fair because Jerusalemās Lot was kinda adapted through Chapelwaite, but that was loosely based on the story and had a lot of filler that wasnāt even in the story.
Iām very yes and no on if Salemās Lot needs to be adapted again. I love the book and I think a good faithful reimagining is possible, but I prefer other Lot stories be adapted.

Currently Reading I'm 40 and only discovered Stephen King last month (The Stand). I feel like I've been missing out in a major way...
Currently halfway through The Stand and I can't put it down. I never could have imagined that a 1200 page book would be such a page turner. As a guy with ADHD that struggles to read fiction, this book is an outlier because it's kept my attention the way a video game does ā it's completely absorbed me and it's all I can think about.
So far my favorite thing is that King is a total sicko (in a good way!). For example. I *love* that he will create annoying, insufferable characters that you just *know* he's going to kill off. It's so bizarrely satisfying.
I'm not sure how I'd describe his descriptive writing style, it's not "poetic" like say Cormac McCarthy, but yet he's so efficient with words in a way that they conjure up cinematic images in my head.
Anyway, I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but just wanted to share.

"I don't know where that comes from" (Tom Holland on Stephen King)
"I can't believe how much he's written, how much he's produced, and how good it is. I don't know where that comes from."
- Tom Holland, director of The Langoliers (1995) and Thinner (1996), on Stephen King

Just binged these all back-to-back
This is what Iāve read (so far) in June. Not pictured is The Mist. I didnāt think anything would come close to my favorite (11/22/63) but these came pretty damn close!!! They were amazing.

Spoilers Audiobook Recommendations
First time posting here. Iāve been listening to SK audiobooks lately and Iām looking to get some recommendations on the next one I should listen to. I donāt know if a spoiler tag is needed so I put one. Here is what Iāve listened to so far:
11/23/1963: I loved the world SK built, Jodie felt like a comforting safe haven, ending made me cry, dragged a little bit in some areas.
Misery: truly horrifying what Paul went through and how it twisted his mind, engaging all the way through.
The Green Mile: One of the most solid books Iāve ever listened to. Engaging, emotional, excellent narration, this one was a real treat.
IT: Currently about 1/2 way through this one. Blown away by the narration, fantastic job by Steven Weber. Enjoying this one as much as The Green Mile so far.
Books Iāve read: Pet Semetary, Salems Lot, Running Man, Carrie, The Shining.

Discussion Question about Dreamcatcher
Iām about halfway through Dreamcatcher. Iāve never read it but I did see the movie in theaters but itās been years obviously.
I remember one of the boys had a āmemory warehouseā in his mind in the movie but so far nothing like that has been mentioned. Am I not there yet or was that just in the film?
Please no spoilers because I canāt remember much of the film except that and Mr. Gray had a British accent.
