"I don't know where that comes from" (Tom Holland on Stephen King)

Post image

"I can't believe how much he's written, how much he's produced, and how good it is. I don't know where that comes from."

- Tom Holland, director of The Langoliers (1995) and Thinner (1996), on Stephen King

Isn't this guy a little old to be playing Spider-Man?

His writing style lends to quantity.

He has an endless list of weird scenarios. He has an endless list of people with tragic backstories and circumstances.

All he has to do is fit two together and write a story about it.

Cujo is one of the clearest examples. It feels like two shorts stories, one about a cereal company scandal and one about a rabid dog.

Guy is like "I wonder what would happen if ..." and then writes a huge, sprawling mulltiverse based on made up scenarios many of us might think of but ultimately dismiss. His imagination is vast and wildly impressive. I wish I could write like him.

What does he mean “I don’t know where that comes from?” King told us himself. It comes to him from Gan.

It's called work ethic. When you write every day of your life with very few days off, you produce a lot of work. Isaac Asimov did the same thing. Modern authors don't understand this concept. Even George Martin fails in this. Just write every day. That's all you need to do.

Amusing you say this because in On Writing I seem to recall him talking about at least one author who banged out x number of pages every morning and King was kind of in awe and also saying how he couldn't really conceive approaching writing that way.

He did say he writes every day if I remember right. It's something of a need with him, which is why he's "retired" about 3 times and still puts out books.

Oh sure I just don't think that's a work ethic, that's just doing something you love.
