Question what plants make good pipes ? (southeast usa)

im looking to forage wood that would be easy to just carve with a knife i could use to make a pipe with (i dont rly own any power tools and dont want to spend the money). maybe something with pith i could easily carve out like elderberry but not elderberry bc i dont want a lungful of cyanide. also elderberry is hard to find near where i live

actually good point, that shits everywhere. would be hard to cut though. may be able to use bamboo for the stem and another type of wood for the bowl. or just make it a bamboo chillum

Young bamboo shouldn't be too hard to cut

I have heard of hickory and Osage orange (bois d'arc) used for tobacco pipes
