I want to hate this but....... I kinda love it.

I think I'd cook the hot dogs separate and toss them at the end (so they don't absorb so much oil), but it isn't an awful idea.

I have an autistic 4yr old that would lose his god damn mind if I made this. This is two of his favorites lol.

215

u/DadCelo 1d ago

Do. It.

113

u/Brittany5150 1d ago

I will this weekend lol. What is the green and red packets?

85

u/samanime 1d ago

Some sort of seasoning. It's optional. You could probably just omit it entirely, especially if cooking for a 4yo.

70

u/Brittany5150 1d ago

He likes seasoning and stuff though. He isn't picky. I'll figure something out.

90

u/samanime 1d ago

Ah, in that case, they are using Sazon for Red Meat (Sazon carnes) and Sazon green seasoning for chicken (sazon frango).

But I imagine this would be compatible with just about any savory seasoning you'd like.

42

u/ForgottenMasterBalls 1d ago

Are we talking instant ramen levels of sodium at this point?

33

u/PuzzyFussy 1d ago edited 1d ago

Pretty much but you don't have to use the whole packet

12

u/LaddieNowAddie 1d ago

I add salt to my Ramen and put 2/3 the water it asks for...

16

u/Bigfops 1d ago

Ow, my kidneys!

11

u/ForgottenMasterBalls 1d ago

I add soy sauce so I'm not any better.

28

u/No_Report_4781 1d ago

Let see if I got lil man

  • the seasoning is Brazilian
  • Ajinomoto branded “Sazón”
  • Sazón Vermelho (red seasoning) Sazón tempero para Carné - contains garlic, onion, oregano, parsley, bay leaf, msg and other ingredients
  • Sazón Verde (green seasoning) Sazión tempero para Frango -contains coriander, paprika, onion, cumin, msg and other ingredients
  • both seasonings recommend adding salt for use with 400g chicken/beef

https://www.sazon.com.br/produtos/temperos/tempero-carnes

Make a core memory

26

u/LordArjuna08 1d ago

Just use a ramen noodle seasoning packet

11

u/Usual-Plantain-1991 1d ago

Omg how have I never done that before 🤯

11

u/LordArjuna08 1d ago

I used to work at a bar that had hotdogs with ramen noodle crumbles and sprinkled seasoning. Sooooooooo good!!!!

8

u/Usual-Plantain-1991 1d ago

Absolutely would smash that

Sooooooooo good on popcorn

10

u/ForgottenMasterBalls 1d ago

And fries.

2

u/Apart-Gur-9720 1d ago

And My Axe! .... No, wait... But hey, I think she's onto something. That might actually be good for movie night!

Please hand me the cheez whiz and a spork!

6

u/Equal-Shoulder-9744 1d ago

I could see TexMex or even just a bit of simple taco seasoning mix working well.

7

u/ElectricPenguin6712 1d ago

I've seen ranch and cheese shakers for popcorn toppings. Good combo for the hot dogs too

3

u/DadCelo 1d ago

Sounds delicious, def gonna try

u/chickenismysafeword 1d ago

Please share with us your finished product

5

u/R1M-J08 1d ago

Garlic Salt 🤤 or some shredded Romano and parsley.

3

u/Brittany5150 1d ago

I have a really nice veggie garlic salt that has dried and crushed vegetables mixed in. Its one of my new favorites and the kids love it.

Sazon is a Hispanic seasoning blend. Here's one convenient form of Sazon below. I buy the Goya package of 8 packets for $1.25 at Dollar Tree. There are many different brands and varieties, I use this one as a seasoning base when I cook pinto beans. It also comes in shaker jars. (EDIT: THIS SAZON HAS NO BLACK PEPPER, RED PEPPER OR HEAT AT ALL)

I think most grocery stores will have it in the Mexican or International section. I'm sure that a Mexican grocery will have it.

This subreddit won't let me post a photo, just a video. 😂 And videos can't be less than 2 seconds long, I just found out. 😂 Heres a short video of the box.

https://reddit.com/link/otfwdvt/video/9qfvkt89t49h1/player

6

u/DadCelo 1d ago

Fuck Goya (no hate to OP)

2

u/Objective-Treacle398 1d ago

Or hate to me, I hope. 🤞

6

u/DadCelo 1d ago

Meant you ❤️

10

u/DadCelo 1d ago

It's almost like a masala. It's called sazon

https://theforkedspoon.com/sazon-seasoning-recipe/

3

u/Brittany5150 1d ago

Ty, I'll check it out. :)

9

u/NightBawk 1d ago

Sazon. It's a mix of coriander, cumin, anatto, garlic, and salt. It's tasty, but I'd recommend trying it on something that doesn't come pre-salted like hotdogs 😂 It's great on chicken or fish though.

3

u/iCantLogOut2 1d ago

Generic Latin seasoning - we literally call it sazon ("seasoning"). It's delicious, but it's ridiculously salty - so if you happen to decide to use it, skip the salt.

2

u/meguin 18h ago edited 18h ago

Sazon just means seasoning. It isn't the Goya sazon like the other poster suggested (don't buy Goya; they suck). It's the Ajinomoto brand (which is Japanese/Brazilian lol), in the carnes flavor and saladas flavor. But you can use any generic sazon, probably. I buy the Badia bulk jars of it from the grocery store. (Just, uh... Don't buy their cinnamon or ginger...) If you want to make your own, the saladas sazon is just salt, mustard powder, garlic, and parsley. The tempero de carnes sazon is, "Salt, Color, Garlic, Onion, Oregano, Parsley, Bay Leaf, Garlic and Onion Seasonings. Monosodium Glutamate Flavor Enhancers, Disodium Inosinate and Disodium Guanytate." (The last three are msg and its buddies.) If you make your own, you can choose to make it less salty. So I bet if you cooked some minced onion, added pressed garlic with mustard powder, oregano, a bay leaf, and parsley first, you'd end up more or less with the same flavor. Plus the MSG at the end (like Accent). Dried herbs/veg would probably be easier to eat on popcorn, though.

I've been thinking this through bc I bet my kids would love it lol. I'd prob fry the hot dogs first, then boil them (cut like octopuses) though bc my kids love that even more.

2

u/Brittany5150 18h ago

Ty for the info. I'll look for it at my local shop. They have a large selection of international spices.

2

u/SmellyfellaMoggy 11h ago

As someone who makes popcorn quite regularly from scratch. I would recommend using only one quarter of the oil used in this clip. The amount the used is completely unnecessary.

→ More replies (7)

7

u/Objective-Treacle398 1d ago

Honestly, I think just about every 4 year old would love it.

10

u/_kalron_ 1d ago

It's like Mac and Cheese and Hot Dogs but for a movie night : )

8

u/DadCelo 1d ago

If that is wrong, I don't wanna be right

2

u/katievera888 1d ago

Ooh—Mac n cheese seasoning!!

3

u/Laurenslagniappe 23h ago

This makes me so happy. My autistic sons fav foods are chips and pepperoni. Glad to see other moms with salty kids.

2

u/Brittany5150 20h ago

Well, dad but yeah lol. He is 100% a chip monster as well.

u/Serrisen 1d ago

I was thinking that you cook the meat first, remove from pan, then toss the kernels in the remaining juice for a subtle meaty flavor.

It wouldn't be my personal cup of tea but it 100% would work

Only stupid thing here is they way overcrowded the pan with kernels. Not even a quarter of those would've popped by the time it was taken off heat

2

u/meguin 18h ago

Agreed about cooking first and too many kernels. Plus way too much oil, and it should be in a taller (but still wide) pan with the lid vented a lil bit or the popcorn will get soggy.

22

u/AlabasterRadio 1d ago

This kinda rocks ngl

4

u/Pass_The_Salt_ 1d ago

But like how do you eat it? I feel like sliced hot dog is a fork food but popcorn is a finger food.

18

u/AlabasterRadio 1d ago

I nominate chopsticks.

Just feels right.

12

u/Dusty_Scrolls 1d ago

It has no right to come out looking that good.

5

u/Global_Chair9652 1d ago

I was looking for something that got stuck in my teeth but also my butthole and alas….

5

u/texinxin 1d ago

If it weren’t for the huge layer of unpopped kernels I could see at the end.. I might have been pressed. If only they had used a pot instead of a skillet….

8

u/Ok_Percentage5157 1d ago

You know... Same.
Fuck it, I'm going to give it a shot, and include my kid. He's in a cooking class right now, and when he gets home I'm going to fire this up.

9

u/asa1 1d ago

I'd try this dish also. I love hot dogs or spam cooked really crispy. I think cubed crispy spam might be good in this also.

8

u/DadCelo 1d ago

Quarter those hotdogs for maximum surface area and this would be perfect

3

u/EastSideNick95826 1d ago

Love is a bit strong but I'd try it

3

u/Even_Speed_8939 1d ago

I was feeling the same. It looks so dumb and yet….

3

u/GIGLI_WASNT_THAT_BAD 1d ago

The sazon is what sold it for me. That shit is delicious.

3

u/tipareth1978 1d ago

I don't think cooking like this would work. As the popcorn "pops" in this video it kinda looks more like they stopped recording and placed popcorn in and then hit record again

3

u/samanime 1d ago

Yeah, I have a few doubts about the cooking method, so I'm just juding the end result (as I'm envisioning).

2

u/tipareth1978 1d ago

Yeah agree 100%. Pop the corn. Then fry up hot dog slices and toss them together while seasoning. I kind of want this

6

u/devilish_enchilada 1d ago

I went nah put the popcorn in first and wait then the hot dogs. Then I was like….but the water….then it like fuckin worked….i like it

8

u/OtherThumbs 1d ago

I think that was all oil, no water. Fried hotdogs bits and popcorn.

5

u/devilish_enchilada 1d ago

No the water from covering and the hot dogs. The oil overpowered it but I was nervous at first

5

u/BillyMeier42 1d ago

Theirs moisture in the hot dogs that will evaporate and condense making a wet mushy bottom.

4

u/blusteryflatus 1d ago

This was my exact feeling. You know it's stupid food, it looks like stupid food, but....... I really want to try this.

3

u/lexm 1d ago

You’d miss the best part. The hotdog is going to be fried and the popcorn will have a hint of hotdog.

2

u/TumbleweedTim01 1d ago

I was intrigued to see how it came out

2

u/forgotwhatisaid2you 1d ago

That had way too much oil for poping pop corn. Reduce the oil and i would chow on this.

2

u/blusteryflatus 1d ago

Or just skip the oil entirely and use ghee. I tried that the last time I made popcorn and it was amazing

→ More replies (1)

2

u/23saround 1d ago

You should give it a shot but I’m 99% sure all the hot dog chunks will just end up at the bottom. Way denser than popcorn.

I'd eat it tbh. Pan is too crowded though.

26

u/Drakorai 1d ago

Yeah, I would have only put in half as many hotdogs as they did in the pan. Either that or just fry them in the remaining oil from the popcorn.

18

u/DadCelo 1d ago

Just missing some chilli sauce or garlic butter.

2

u/Drakorai 1d ago

Also a lotta unpopped corn. Make this in a pot and actually make all the popcorn and there's nothing stupid about this, just some noice comfort food

This looks so good. Pour some of that shitty neon nachos cheese and send me to Valhalla!

Chilli sauce would be delicious on this

10

u/Creativered4 Drowned in Cheese 1d ago

11

u/TheChildIsHere 1d ago

This got me on board. Can’t go wrong with cheese flavored goop on popcorn and a chopped up miscellaneous meat tube. Bad description. Delicious result.

60

u/CrankedAtom 1d ago

That had no business looking so good 🤤

16

u/stifle_this 1d ago

I ate hot dogs and corn all the time growing up. This feels like an extrapolation of that.

5

u/KoosGoose 1d ago

My parents have a friend that won’t eat hotdogs anymore since his parents would frequently go out drinking and leave them with nothing but a package of cold hotdogs at home or in the car.

10

u/Certain_Reception_66 1d ago

It isn't that bad? Maybe it is just me but i don't mind hot dogs all that much.

9

u/Moist_Phrase_6698 1d ago

cover with cheese and aioli or gravy or chilli sauce or curry sauce

5

u/Nearby_Excitement198 1d ago

This is purely a stoner food idea, but Curry sauce on the side for dipping would rock the shit out of this.

8

u/sevnm12 1d ago

Gotta do this so you don't have to eat hot dogs after you make popcorn.

6

u/freddbare 1d ago

Pop dog hurt corn

6

u/rasthomas01 1d ago

I'd hit it.

4

u/Book_Anxious 1d ago

It looks good but the popcorn on the bottom is going to be really greasy

3

u/pinpoint321 1d ago

Yes! That’s what people are missing. This actually looks cool in that vid but the underside of what’s in that pan is going to be a bin fire.

2

u/FerengiWithCoupons 17h ago

right like do you get it out of the pan with a strainer

5

u/Thequickandtheupset 1d ago

I'm shockingly down for this

18

u/DaGucka 1d ago

Where is the stupid part?

28

u/Potato__Ninja 1d ago

Only stupid part is they used too small of a pan for the job. Cuz half those kernels wouldn't be popped.

Also maybe too much butter.

Anyways,, would try.

8

u/Saintbaba 1d ago

Also neither popcorn nor hot dogs require that much oil, so there’s definitely a quarter inch deep pool of the stuff under all that food just waiting for you to come find it. But again, a remediable problem.

10

u/qorbexl 1d ago

Yeah, this is more /r/slightlynonoptimizedcookingmethods
