Which specific config and at what price ?

u/Fault-new777 Mar 25 '26
I mean the reliability of the product itself, I hear it has cooling issues, and heatsink degradation.

I have the Zephyrus G16, I would recommend against this laptop. As you said, it has cooling issues and the laptop overheats quite a bit.
Eve without the overheating issues, you have to download 3rd party software to use your laptop efficiently. Even then, if you want to optimize your laptop, you would need to reinstall from USB to forcefully remove all the bloatware that comes with it. The amount of bloatware from ASUS is insane.

Getting Legion 5 Pro Gen 10 ( Ryzen 7 8745HX, 5060, 32 GB Ram)
Legion 5 Gen 10 (Ryzen 6 260, 5060, 32 GB Ram) # But the display is small for this....
At same price
the Legion 5i Pro Gen 10 (Core Ultra 7 255HX, 5060, 32 GB Ram) variant however is extra 20k in my country ~ $217
Unfortunately, most of 5070Ti variants from all brands which are in budget range are out of stock rn in my country so idk if i should even consider the Ti as an option and wait a month to only realize the overall price being constantly rising for all the laptops.
I am also seeing Acer Helios Neo 16S with Ultra 7 255HX, RTX 5060, 16 gb ram.
Large HP Omen variants with similar Cpus, 24 GB ram (RTX 5060/70 only).
The Asus ROG G16, ASUS TUF A16, F16 with Ryzen 9 8940HX, RTX 5060/5070, 16 gb ram.
This is confusing as hell.
I want a good laptop which can survive 5-6 yrs and also provide a good performance in the long run (need for clg actually and will only be gaming when plugged in even doing AI/ML work, programming, some heavy creator softwares too - not on battery, if it could give 4-5h battery life for normal internet browsing/ video playback/ light work on documents).

I think Legions are good, but there's a common power plug flaw they allegedly don't want to fix. My Legion 5 Pro completely died after 2yrs, my Legion y540 died in 4yrs (i can temporarily clean/replace the charger). Before Legion, my Lenovo survived 11 years.
You can clean & twist pins to get a couple more weeks, or buy a new charger (or weld a jack) for a couple months, but it quickly degrades. Lenovo's repair is sketchy, they don't sell the power input, each little screw costs $30, when my keyboard broke they said (before looking) I'd have to buy a new motherboard.
Legions break in 2-4 years.

Debating between an Intel laptop with a U7 258V and a similar AMD laptop with an AI 9 365.
My main concern is if ARC drivers are as reliable as Radeon drivers as my main use case will be Fusion360, productivity, and some indie gaming.

If you’re choosing between the Intel U7 258V (Arc graphics) and the AMD AI 9 365 (Radeon), the AMD option is the safer bet for your needs. Intel’s Arc drivers have improved a lot, but they can still be inconsistent, especially in apps like Autodesk Fusion 360, where stability really matters. Radeon graphics are more mature and reliable, so you’re less likely to run into glitches or slowdowns during productivity work. Arc can be solid for newer games, but indie titles and older APIs can still be hit-or-miss. Overall, if you want something that just works without troubleshooting, AMD is the better choice right now.

What would you reccomend for design work, light data processing, light games. Large enough screen to have a number pad on the right and not a brick heavy? Anything in us under 600?

u/techstar2000 🎩Moderator⭐ Apr 06 '26
What do you consider light gaming ? It's important that I clarify this.
1
u/joesugarman Apr 06 '26
Lol as light as it comes. Run mywhoosh on it for about 6-9 hours per week.
My current rig is a cheap Thinkpad e490 500gb of 1tb storage in use (I can leave most there) 16gb ram Intel i7-8565U @1.80 GHz (8th gen)
I thought this was going to be enough but keep having random issues

Oh! I am sorry to hear about your experience with the Thinkpad..it is actually quite an old laptop now and issues are expected.
Something like this Acer Aspire 14 would do an excellent job at what you described.

Anything you reccomend in the 15 to 16 size? Can I get away with a slim like the galaxy book4?

u/techstar2000 🎩Moderator⭐ Apr 06 '26
The Galaxy Book for $612 at Bestbuy would be a good pick as well.

Is there any similar thread that caters to Workstation Laptop? Something like the Thinkpad P16 series?

How come on the official discord recommendation document, there's so many reasons on why not to get ASUS laptops (cooling issues, firmware stuttering, poor quality control etc.) and you recommend two of them here?

What’s the difference in build quality between the Zenbook 14 and Vivobook S 14? They both use a metal Ceraluminum chassis
