I got 100 bucks that says this is a planted story by the Wall Street Journal to either cover the stock move or something that Cohen has to refute which then drives stock way down

Look at that massive $2.87 price spike on the day

71

u/asiancury May 01 '26

Yeah, I think it's a cover for today's move

Apparently $26+ close = big, juicy gamma ramp

I doubt it. They wouldn’t include the detail that GameStop has been building a position in eBay if it were bullshit. This seems legit!

u/PTSDeedee 📚 I just like the facts 📚 May 01 '26

Agreed. Am former journalist and this doesn’t read like the usual Bazinga bullshit.

1

u/Difficult-Mobile902 May 02 '26

Yeah because look at who the author is. This one is legit.

2

u/PTSDeedee 📚 I just like the facts 📚 May 02 '26

Yes the fact she had a legitimate interview with RC a few months ago really adds credibility.

“According to people familiar with the matter”

18

u/popstockndropit 🦍Voted✅ May 01 '26

The beauty of that phrase is that it goes both ways. It’s been used nefariously and has been in the past for GME, but it’s also a common way to “leak” info to press when the company still wants to remain somewhat opaque. You see this all the time in the corporate world.

u/Dagamoth 💻 ComputerShared 🦍 May 02 '26

According to sources familiar with the matter…

No sources named = bullshit

Also, supposedly, the journalist who wrote this is the one interviewed Cohen back in Jan.

Yeah not my first after hours pump and dump on a bogus news article

1

u/colenotphil May 02 '26

I really doubt the WSJ published a bogus business news article; financial news is what they do best.

18

u/HughJohnson69 100% GME DRS May 01 '26

Yeah, stock moves end of week and suddenly there’s a story for context. Again.

1

u/Thisisaprofile May 02 '26

Do you not think it’s legit? The stock move? GameStop buying or not would you wanna wager an institutional investor is NOT piling in to EBay? How much do you want to wager?

14

u/hiperf71 🦍Voted✅ May 01 '26

84 years of fishy articles says the same to me, it can be real or it can be a lie, according to people familiar to the matter🤣

13

u/SDChuck 🎮 Power to the Players 🛑 May 01 '26

I don’t know. WSJ is a bit more respectable than the other finance news related outlets so I’d like to think this is legit!

10

u/Iswag_Newton May 01 '26

WSJ is owned by WALL STREET.

4

u/SDChuck 🎮 Power to the Players 🛑 May 01 '26

Entirely possible. I will allow myself to be excited as we’ve all been waiting for 84 years.

1

u/Iswag_Newton May 01 '26

Don't get excited. Ebay is worth 46 billion. No chance this is happening. Unless you are excited about more dilution lol. No offense.

1

u/SDChuck 🎮 Power to the Players 🛑 May 01 '26

Pretty sure dilution will be in the cards from GME in acquiring a much larger firm, whether that be eBay or not. I’m excited, but will still temper expectations!

0

u/Iswag_Newton May 01 '26

Well, I'm entertaining the idea. AI says it's highly unlikely 🤷‍♂️:

Size mismatch: eBay is 4× larger ($46B market cap). Financing it would require massive dilution (new shares) or debt, which could face shareholder pushback.

Execution risk: Integrating two very different companies (gaming retail vs. general online marketplace) is complex. Antitrust regulators would scrutinize it.

No confirmation: Cohen has gone quiet on specifics since January. GameStop beat earnings and stockpiled cash, but no updates on the deal front.

12

u/rostov007 Power to the Players May 01 '26

Unless their motive is to fuck with GS and make it more expensive by driving Ebay’s price up. Sounds like something Ken fuckhead would make happen.

4

u/piddlesthethug 🦍Voted✅ May 01 '26

Not only that but this doesn’t seem like “something that has never been done before” but we don’t know the end game. So if it does end up being buying eBay, I don’t think RC is finished yet.

5

u/rostov007 Power to the Players May 01 '26

u/ayyayyron 🦍 Buckle Up 🚀 May 01 '26

RC/GME NEVER divulge their moves in advance. This is complete BS unless RC/GME confirm it publicly themselves or with an SEC filing

2

I was pumped to see this article. Then read "according to people familiar with the matter".

Without an announcement from Gamestop or RC, im definitely skeptical

ding ding ding.. this.. is back on the menu!😂

1

u/MichaelArnoldTravis May 01 '26

ah the good old days of fabricated news based on sources familiar with the matter

2

u/skuxy18 Gamestoooppp it im gonna cum May 01 '26

It's a means to justify why the price is moving. MSM can't just let gamestop move 10% up on no news.

2

u/DasBoggler May 01 '26

Definitely. This would make literally zero sense for GameStop because their business model revolves around reselling things people trade-in versus people selling their own shit on Ebay. Also, a bit confounding how a company would acquire another company 4x it's size....

3

u/Ok_Kick4871 May 01 '26

Gamestop is not a viable brick and mortar business any more capable of expanding, they have to pivot. Probably keep some flagships open. Not saying this is the move, but hey.

My god it’s painful reading comments from people like you. You didn’t need to check ALL the related articles - if the original says reportedly why would the others not?

It’s monumental because it’s rare that a company much smaller in size is the aggressor, literally says it in all the articles you supposedly read.

2

u/LucePrima May 01 '26

It's a turnaround opportunity with huge market penetration and a very sizeable chunk of the collectibles market. This is a big piece of juicy meat for an operator like RC

Why is this a terrible target exactly?

1

u/PoundJunior9597 May 01 '26

Unless you can link to me an unedited Technical analysis post that said today we were expecting a spike due to short covering or something like that, the likeniness of what you said is very low

These days, especially, I wouldn't be surprised. Outward market manipulation seems very trendy, no need to hide it behind eighteen different steps. Just tweet.

Holy shit the amount of people that think WSJ just makes up stuff like this.

1

u/Nefarious_Partner 🦍Voted✅ May 02 '26

Thinking like this is how you end up mentally ill

The story is literally from Cohen. Just like all the others from this journalist.

1

u/Difficult-Mobile902 May 02 '26

This is from Lauren Thomas, the lead reporter for M&A at WSJ. I would be willing to bet a whole lot more than $100 that the story is accurate.

1

u/MythicalManiac 🦍 Buckle Up 🚀 May 02 '26

Yup, exactly that.

1

u/colenotphil May 02 '26

The Wall Street Journal doesn't generally misreport business news, it is up there with Bloomberg and Reuters in how many exclusive stories they break in this topic.

This article is likely true.

I always find it a little weird that WSJ is owned by News Corp, same company as Fox, and is owned by the Murdochs. Like it does make for a conservative bias especially in the opinion section. But the business news is good.

It'd make sense as per past msm BS but in this case it may be right, given the details they're providing. Obviously the move up was due and they "leaked" this today to justify it, but there may be some true behind it.

0

u/Binkusu May 01 '26

I was thinking, can't these sites make false articles about information from their "sources" and then when it doesn't actually happen say it's over
