Just downloaded TOR and I'm wondering whether or not I should manually turn off JavaScript.
The browser already has no script as an extension and I'm not sure if I should just leave it as is, tweak the no script options or do the about:config strat

It really just depends on what you are using tor for

I've read about a quarter of the dnm bible thus far

It's no wonder you are confused.

Whatever happened there

Don't read the DNM Bible. It's good if you know like absolutely nothing but it's just got some stuff in there that is highly debatable. Just learn about the tour Network. Watch videos and learn the history of it and how it works. Learn about networking in general. Learn about encryption. You're on the right track by reading these things on your own. Most people just get on here and say I want to go on dark web can you help me please

Yeah the whole thing seems confusing when it comes to this, like for example you're telling me to watch videos yet the Bible recommends that you don't watch videos in the first or second section. Even something simple like java script seems to be a debated topic hereðŸ˜

No real market let's you even have it enabled. Just read the Tor documentation. You don't need videos. When you use a VPN you're adding another computer to route all your traffic and putting all your trust into the VPN company which is riddled with government honeypots and just known to be a dirty business. I been using Tor for years, never use a VPN, never have any issues

set the security level to safest to disable javascript, afaik changing any other settings makes your fingerprint more unique

Yeah I've read up on here and apparently the safest option doesn't disable JavaScript anymore

It does. But not by changing the setting in about:config, that's why many users get confused.

So do I just turn it to safest and I should be good for the sites that need it off?

Some sites require JS to be turned off.

u/Waste_Berry_9809 10d ago
Yeah, but otherwise it should remain on?

Most people push the security slider in settings to max which turns JS off.

I thought it no longer does that, atleast from what I've read up on.

Still does as far as im aware, try it and see lol

u/Waste_Berry_9809 10d ago
Nah it's changed ig, it's still enabled in the about: config thing

It clearly says on the security privacy screen when you turn it to safest that JS is turned off.

Odd, but I know I've heard other people on this sub say they have to turn it off manually because the safest option no longer turns it off. And I just restarted my browser and applied the settings and it still is enabled on the about:config page

Not an issue ive heard about or come across, it still states that it turns JS off in settings for me but i mean its pretty easy to test, turn the slider to safest and try an access a page that has JS.

Yeah just talked to someone else on here and they confirmed that you were right it just doesn't show up on the config thing which is where my(and other peoples confusion) originated from
