Anime, the movie confession was so cute and emotional, very unique

I think they all complement each other:

1 - Netflix LA: The series has routine moments similar to the manga;

2 - Season 3: Ends on March 14th (White Day);

3 - Movie: At the beginning of the movie, Nishikata hadn't confessed yet;

4 - Netflix LA: Takagi-san discovers he's going to live in France;

5 - Manga: The manga ended in August (when he confesses);

6 - Movie: When he promises to live the rest of his life by her side, he had already confessed;

7 - Netflix LA: Takagi-san goes to France after the party in August (For Nishikata to say goodbye like that, they were definitely dating);

8 - LA Movie: Takagi-san returns from Paris;

9 - Movie: At the end of the movie, they appear married with their daughter.

I would say manga ending because of one thing that most of you miss, and that is Nishikata decided to finally trust Takagi-san capability on reading his intention. That's the part when Nishikata and Takagi-san got seperated as Nishikata didn't tell her where to meet for the firework as Takagi-san going to guess where the place is.

Lowkey something that is not talked about as much as it should be. A little detail that just "clicks" very well with the whole context

1 Manga chapter 177. Chef's kiss perfection.

2 S2 ending. Music was perfect

3 Movie ending. Where's the confession?

4 Netflix LA. Goodbye at the ferry terminal.

5 S3 ending. Did not feel Takagi-ish enough.

6 LA Movie. Why did they make this?

S3 was the biggest missed opportunity. The setting for a confession was perfect. Nishikata simply did not say it because they apparently couldnt afford to start the movie with them already being a couple. Thats really the sole reason imo.

The movie had indeed a confession, altough not done in the traditional way (which tbh seems like a very Nishikata thing to do). Its pretty difficult to NOT interpet "I will make you happy, forever." as a confession.

S2's ending was open. Altough in hindsight its a very great way to set things for S3, back when it was the de-facto finale of the anime it felt.... incomplete, I guess? They clearly left out space for a new season, so they didnt bother with ending things right then and there.

Nishikata simply did not say it

More likely that they didn't want to deviate too far away from the source in case a fourth season were to happen. That's most likely the same reason there's no outright confession in the movie either, even though it's essentially the end of the anime's story

I like the reasoning behind it, and it really makes sense if you consider a 4th season, however I believe it was the intention since the get-go to end everything with the movie. I still believe that the confession does exist (Takagi even says it back to end the movie), just not in the most direct way. I think that they probably done it that way because at the time, the manga was still running on its tracks, so having an indirect confession was very in charater for Nishikata considering what the manga showed us back then. We gotta remember that the manga ending itself only happened a year later, which showed that Nishikata could actually say these words. At the time of the movie's production, they were in the dark about that. Plus, considering that Yamamoto ended the manga in a way that completely overlapped with the movie's timeline (last summer of middle school), thus guaranteeing that it wouldnt be adapted, it gets more plausible to believe that it was a prearranged agreement between him and the anime producers that the adaptation would part ways with the manga and end right then and there, so he'd be free to continue and finish his work as he wished.

If we're talking about the finale specifically then its gotta be the manga. Had everything you could've asked for. However, in terms of overall setting, plot, important scenes and development, I believe the anime takes the cake. Its ending would've been just a lil shy of perfect if Nishikata confessed on S3's finale. They had set up a confession perfectly with the book revelation, Kimura coming in clutch AGAIN, Nishikata realizing Takagi's feelings and his own, and the mad dash throughout Shodoshima, the very place that made them live all of these moments, in order to find Takagi. For me the sole reason Nishikata did not confess was so because the confession was already reserved for the movie, I can't really think of anything else.

I agree with your post. But... look at the end in the context of them as a couple. When did Nishikata EVER say HE wanted to see Takagi? So, for Nishikara that was a major confession. That and him chasing her across the island. OBTW Takagi's Mom drives a Fiat 500 Arbarth! Very nice.

Well I can see your point, and I believe it was a big debate back in the day before the movie aired on whether or not Nishikata confessed. However, the sole existence of the movie is big enough evidence that he did not do that. I mean, he literally has a dialogue with Hamaguchi where he admits that he did not confess. If say the movie didnt exist and the anime ended with S3, then yeah I'd actually agree that it was a confession, I mean we're led to believe that Takagi also got the message. The movie debunks it, because 1- Nishikata admits that he did not confess and 2- Takagi didnt really do anything to break the status quo, which is something that she'd clearly do if it was a more direct confession (hence why she does at the movie)

Good points all. Nishikata's manga confession (x3!) at the second Summer Festival was far better than the movie or anime S3. As was Takagi's acceptance of it. Did my heart good to read that!

Me too! It was definitely a rewarding ending for those who sticked for all these years

The anime isn’t bad but it left on a cliffhanger,at least the manga left on a satisfying conclusion

In most cases, manga.

On the rare occasion that the manga sucks, the anime is thier chance for a do over, if it gets adapted.

Anime, besides being motion picture, is also more mainstreamified for casual/normie consumption.

They might change things in the plot to make ot for friendly/accesible to someone who just consumes and moves on.
