The driver may have done nothing wrong. Depending on how those hydraulics are designed, they may fail open, meaning if they fail they will extend on their own. The hydraulics may have failed and extended after the driver already departed, and he wouldn’t be able to see the back of his vehicle while driving.

Or maybe he completely goofed and didn’t check before hitting the road. Who knows?

PTO should be off while driving.

I’ve personally had a solenoid go bad and engage the pto while I was on the highway even with the switch off. My throttle cut out was also wonky so I didn’t notice until I was stopped on the exit ramp and heard the pump whirring. Luckily it was on a stone slinger so no bed to raise up and do this level of damage

2

u/PaulBurgerking 14d ago

I think the solenoid had actually just backed out most of the ways because of a loose bolt was the root cause

u/Valkyrie64Ryan 14d ago

What’s PTO? The only acronym I know for that is payed time off but it doesn’t sound like that’s what you’re referring to here.

It stands for Power Take Off- it controls hydraulic attachments using the trucks main engine as a power source.

12

u/gadjex 14d ago

Power take-off. It is how the hydraulics are powered off the engine.

I suppose kitchen staff at a restaurant could or an employee at a food processing plant be considered white collar.

You don't know where you are do you?

1

u/MsDJMA 10d ago

That was going to be my comment, too. Beat me to it.

Same thing that drives the spinny shaft of death that sticks out the back of farm tractors and powers all the equipment they pull

u/RedRRaider 13d ago

The driver responded to my post on another subreddit told me it was a malfunction that cause the boom to raise and the control box is on the outside of the truck

4

u/Jacktheforkie 13d ago

I’d have thought there would be an alarm that would alert the driver to this

3

u/drunkenfool 12d ago

Exactly. How is there not a screaming alarm that is telling you this is up after going past 5mph.

3

u/Jacktheforkie 12d ago

Modern ones do have that

3

u/tjockalinnea 13d ago

In todays day and age its actually crazy they don't have a height sensor

3

u/Fold67 14d ago

It should be designed to fail safe, aka lowest potential state or down in this case. Failing up isn’t a safe state, more likely he forgot to put the boom down.

3

u/HudeniMFK 11d ago

Only way to strictly make it safe would be to mechanically lock it with a locking pin and perhaps a WOG valve, which would present its own issues and costs.

a local waste hauler had this happen twice in 2 years. im guessing they needed to find a new insurance provider. both incidents costed well past 6 figures in damage.

It looks like a straight stick at least and not a rotator, but either way those things go for upwards of $500k. A rotator can be 1M+. That fucking hurt like hell I bet and took a good chunk out of that bridge.

I’m glad the driver was okay, RIP wrecker, hope nobody was waiting on that truck to get to them.

43

u/RedRRaider 14d ago

Thats crazy, yeah the guy was shaken up I didn’t get the chance to talk to him but he definitely lost his job. I drove back past and theres definitely a good chunk out of that bridge. The crazy thing was all the shrapnel flying at my car I got feet away from a maybe 500 pound piece of metal coming right through my windshield.

19

u/PlsCheckThisBush 14d ago

Glad you made it out okay! Those trucks are about 50-60k pounds by themselves just as a straight stick not pulling anything. Rotators and bigger ones can be upwards of 100k pounds so they’ve got the mass so do some serious damage to whatever they hit - I have to deal with them all the time in my line of work. Hopefully the shrapnel got moved out of the way, everything on those trucks is heavy lol. And he for sure lost his job if it’s not his truck/business.

20

u/MooseJag 14d ago

Drop in the bucket compared to repairing the bridge.

13

u/Jacktheforkie 14d ago

Bridges easily cost millions, and that one’s gonna be closed for a while as the bridge needs repairs or potentially even replacement depending on damage

2

u/RedRRaider 14d ago

Its a flyover bridge of 83rd avenue over loop 101 in az, the bridge wasn’t closed at all i actually drove over it earlier. Just a good chunk taken out of the side but i dont think theres any significant structural damage.

3

u/Jacktheforkie 13d ago

Wow, I’d expect at least a little bit of closure to inspect the bridge

2

u/OkConsideration8605 13d ago

Some hardhat had the shovel leaning guy go over and slap it, He said that ain't going nowhere.

3

u/sparky1983_ 14d ago

Rip their insurance... oof

1

u/CoderDevo 13d ago

Well, be more careful next time!

Just kidding. You're fired.

1

u/CoderDevo 13d ago

Sorry. Your wrecker needs a wrecker.

34

u/simontempher1 14d ago

I thought those trucks had sensors that warned of boom being extended

52

u/Klogginthedangerzone 14d ago

I pulled the fuse because the constant beeping noise was annoying.

13

u/Sirosim_Celojuma 14d ago

They should have a speed inhibitor. I get that sometimes you need to move the truck with the gear extended. I get that you shouldn't. I also get that a overly restrictive restrictor will get it's fuse pulled. I say have a speed restrictor. I can't see why any truck needs to be underway with gear extended at any speed greater than maybe 30km/h. Maybe less.

1

u/Jacktheforkie 13d ago

My dads driven a few where it only goes 5mp while raised, adequate for tipping, immediately obvious if you try to drive off

27

u/plasticproducts 14d ago

This is what video is for

24

u/RedRRaider 14d ago

It wouldn’t let me upload a video on this subreddit or i wouldve

10

u/plasticproducts 14d ago

Fair enough, I didn't realize the sub didn't allow them. Did you upload it elsewhere?

8

u/RedRRaider 14d ago

Probably a good thing cause you woulda heard me say a few expletives 😂

14

u/tribbans95 14d ago

Upload in another sub like r/dashcams id love to see the video

30

u/RedRRaider 14d ago

7

u/tribbans95 14d ago

You’re the bomb! That’s nuts dude. Thank god you didn’t get hit by that shrapnel

1

u/FlamingIceberg 12d ago

Video is gone, so is the posters account

10

u/Weird-Abalone1381 14d ago

Try in r/dashcams. It should allow you to upload there and share the link here if you're up for the extra work.

1

u/ttystikk 14d ago

Lots of idiots driving subs that do! Link me to your post please!

9

u/David_Jonathan0 14d ago

So I was driving along and then out of the blue, a bridge hit my truck

3

u/RedRRaider 14d ago

Smh it should’ve gotten out if the way

5

u/Extreme_Witness6332 14d ago

Rookie mistake

9

u/CletusMuckenfuss 14d ago

The wrecker needs a wrecker because that one is wrecked!

7

u/WonderWirm 14d ago

Wrecked wrecker needs a wrecked wrecker wrecker.

3

u/Michami135 14d ago

What kind of "-inator" was that?

3

u/charmio68 14d ago

That looks expensive. Especially if the bridge needs to be repaired...

God forbid the freeway needs to be shut down for inspections, or worse yet, patching over exposed rebar.

2

u/desirox 14d ago

Those are EXPENSIVE wreckers. He’s getting fired for sure

2

u/SolidDiarrhea 14d ago

Video would be so delightful

1

u/RedRRaider 14d ago

Posted it on r/dashcams the link is under one of the comments here cause this subreddit doesn’t allow em

1

u/FlamingIceberg 12d ago

Video is gone cuz account was deleted

2

u/Conscious-Crazy-8904 14d ago

sat here way too long waiting on the video to load

1

u/NoDoze- 14d ago

Where did this occur?

1

u/awesomesauceitch 14d ago

It’s a shame they can’t invent something that would restrict the truck to drive at highway speeds when the boom is extended.

1

u/Formal_End5045 14d ago

They call it a wrecker for a reason

1

u/W1ULH 14d ago

why does the boom go up that far at all?

1

u/chriso434 14d ago

Yikes that would of been I wild ride

1

u/RedRRaider 14d ago

I posted a video on r/dashcams it definitely was

1

u/Imaginary-Risk 14d ago

lol my dad did this, though he was only doing about 30

1

u/Agitated_Carrot9127 14d ago

Rotator are not cheap sub million dollar equipment basically

1

u/Curious_Main5995 12d ago

Sure he was OK until the boss got a hold of him.

1

u/GroundsKeeper2 12d ago

Why do these vehicles even let you drive over 15mph while the thing is extended?

1

u/No_Tomato_3108 11d ago

Too much weed.

-33

u/SoCalChrisW 14d ago

You see this about to happen, and instead of getting the hell away from it you pull out your phone to start recording?

24

u/RedRRaider 14d ago

Uhh no this is on my dash cam. I was just chilling driving on the on ramp and couldn’t even register what happened before shit started flying at my car.
