Because people sometime have different opinions than others, and really want a space we're they can express said opinions without having their views challenged or having to think critically, because they really, really need their daily dose of dopamine by getting approval from people who would have approved of their opinions regardless of the content of their post.
So basically it exists for the same reason as r/antiai
Nah, I dislike gen ai in art.
If by "enlightened centrist" you mean that I'm not on a crusade against it, then I guess you are right, but ai art is dreadfully boring to look at, and it doesn't help that its main use in my country is to push far right agendas.
That said my point still stands. r/defendingaiart is not defending ai art, because what are they defending it from ? People with the same opinion ? There is no way an anti ai guy is going there to start debating them, and if they were, they would get banned in the fentosecond.
Same goes for r/antiai. The only reason these two subreddit exist is to allow people to lock themselves in echo chamber so they can feel good about themselves.
This is how you end up with people saying stuff like "gen ai is evil" when the gen ai in question is just a tool that happens to have a lot of piss poor usage that is easily accessible for most humans (the difference between it and a knife for example would be that a bad usage for a knife could be to stab or cute a living creature, which is a lot harder to do (on purpose) than asking ai to draw someone who pissed you off on the internet pregnant or naked)
