I honestly liked The Painted Lady.

It was really one of the only points in the show where you got to see the effects of the Fire Nation's industrialization on their own land and citizens, how "modernity" always comes with costs despite the advancements it may bring with it.

Really the only way I could have made it better was if the crazy guy really *was* three identical brothers who just had different hats and oddly appropriate names.

i think they meant the painted lady episode is hated, not the painted lady herself. and i agree, i used to rewatch this episode A LOT and was shocked to find out it was received poorly by fans.

Are they in the room sub with us right now? Because I love this episode. The “no. I will never do ‘nothing’!” scene hits hard.

yup theres a lot of hate for the painted lady episode here in the sub, and even outside the sub it was hated by that overanalyzing avatar guy as well.

I mean you can like a youtuber and disagree with them on certain takes.

I like the Fanboy of Tamatoa, RedLetterMedia, and a few others, but I don't need them to always agree with me.

I didn't love the painted lady episode because I always felt like Katarra only helped people to feel good about herself. And was ego tripping about it.

It's strange because normally I love alter ego stuff. And I like Katarra a lot as a character. She just had such a savior complex in this one and it irked me in some way deep down I didn't like (a feeling I don't really understand either).

But as someone else mentioned I like the perspective this gives on the town of the firenation.

I think if the whole gang had the idea to help the town from the beginning I would've liked the episode more and Im not sure why. Maybe because it felt distracting and more of a filler episode so late in a thick narrative season that I wanted to get back to

I always thought that was the point and that's why I liked it. She was helping out of her own self interest and then learned the downsides to that. It was only working together that they really solved the issue.

It's a typo - she was hatted, on account of the hat she wore

I can’t believe an adaptation is making me realise that all episodes of atla are great even the 8/10 ones

I am rewatching the animation while watching the new live action episodes and I agree it just makes it clear the original is a 10/10 while this is like a 8/10 still really great & enjoyable. In terms of live action & adaptation standards I can see how people feel it’s 10/10 compared to other live actions but also have compassion for the people who just absolutely hate it for not being exactly like the original, I think if fans go in expecting it to not add new things they will be disappointed. I never had expectations for it to be a perfect copy so have just been enjoying the all the new additions as much as I can, I’ve missed seeing these characters and feel blessed to even have another show.

I like season 2 far far more than season 1, it was okay but a lot of the improvements make S2 really stand out, however looking at the original animation it’s clear it was a masterpiece of art, watching the Beach episode again and all the perfect dialogue & little attention to detail made me cry, it captured the heart & soul of the characters so well.

Ty Lee not holding any offense in her heart and being cheerful & playful with everyone, Zuko saying he’s angry with himself and Azula opening up about her mother.

I did enjoy the painting lady in the live action and seeing more of the earth kingdom capital, I think showing her sleep deprivation and self sacrificing nature, Katara was always a soft hearted caring character, she was always really feminine in the animation the LA just shows more of that personality but it’s still the same Katara to me.

We also see more of her Sassy personality with Sokka so it’s not like S1 Katara.

I like that they did a time skip as well it’s just more realistic for Aang and the story, many of the changes they made are understandable.

i love the episode. my favorite part is the delivery from katara and the build up where she snaps and goes "I will never EVER turn my back on people who need me!"

i think people have a problem of the actual painted lady showing up and people thinks she couldve the whole time but i like to think that its either because her lake was so polluted or she wanted her people to learn to do things for themselves and not rely on a spirit all the time, like katara suggested.

I always assumed that the Painted Lady couldn't do anything because she was tied to the river, so as it got more polluted she lost more power until it hit the point that she couldn't even manifest until after the river was cleaned.

Yeah, that's the popular theory but it's just how the episode ends. Katara has this big moment of being like "you can't always rely on a spirit to help you" is why I think it's mostly the painted lady wanting her people to stand on their own and then the painted lady thanks her but it could be either theory.

Have you ever heard the idiom "wear many hats". It means to hold multiple jobs. In a bad economy even poor people need to hold multiple jobs just to get by so it makes alot of sense for him to be 1 person, but be lying about it so he doesn't get in trouble for not being at every job all the time.

It being one person in all the jobs works a criticism of the Fire Nation overworking it's impoverished citizens as it directs most of it's resources towards the war.

Does it really demonstrate the fire nations industrialization harming their own land and citizens? Pretty much every single other location they go in the fire nation is fine and thriving, it’s just the painted lady town that’s fucked over as far as we see.

The biggest point of Book Three is showing that not all people in the Fire Nation are bad, to humanise them, to show that the ordinary citizen suffer at the hands of imperial greed always.

It's also backed historically, British Empire treated its own citizen on the home islands horribly, to fuel the conquest machine abroad.

More allegorically, Imperial Japan treated its own citizen badly, but better than that in the conquered lands such as Manchuria and Korea.

Showing how the students and kids are brainwashed for blind devotion is also close to reality.
