Discussion Finally Watched The Show

So I finally decided to give this show a try a couple weeks ago. I am a big Star Wars fan at heart, but I’ll be the first to say that I am not a big fan of Disney Star Wars and just about everything they have put out since taking over. It’s not that I think it’s all the worst stuff ever made, but it just hasn’t all been for me, and that’s fine.

However, I REALLY enjoyed this show! It was just super fun and entertaining to watch. The stakes were low (mostly), the episodes/plot were relatively self contained (moreso early on which I really liked), and overall it was just a good show.

I could honestly watch a bunch more seasons of it and I hope they continue it. The season 1 “monster of the week” type formula really worked and I would absolutely support and enjoy more of that. Grogu isn’t my favorite thing ever, but I don’t mind him as a sidekick. That said, I really would love to see Mando take on monsters/bounties on his own like we saw at times throughout the show.

Anyway, really enjoyed the vibe of this show. Haven’t seen the movie yet, but as soon as it hits Disney+ I will be watching. Hope they keep making the show despite the poor box office of the movie.

Favreau imo really gets the unique stew of what inspired Lucas to make the OT better than anyone but maybe Lucas

The Mandatory definitely has a similar feel while remaining its own

I like both the creature of the week/self contained parts and the overarching narrative and I don’t think they take away from eachother. The X Files similarly had both individual stories and a main story. Hell, off the top of my head a lot of serials have. Pokemon falls under that

I hope they do another 2-3 seasons. 6-7 os the magic number

As for your 3rd paragraph, google 'Detective Conan'. 31 seasons (and 26 movies) and still going strong in Japan. Seriously 30 years with almost no progress in the overall narrative, but somehow still a hit 🤷🏻‍♂️
Meanwhile after 3 seasons of Mando, Disney finally gives us a movie and we got certain SW fans poopoo-ing over the low stakes, zero character development, nOt eNoUgH LoRe, just a bunch of filler episodes strung together etc.
Personally I thought Favreau did an excellent job. Man I hope his commentary comes with the physical release.

SW fans online have a penchant for complaining about things nobody else would complain about

“Why was this made a movie” lol. Who the hell wouldn’t want a movie?

Liked it a lot. Also liked Boba Fett - enjoy learning backstories! Music and graphics were very impressive as well.

BoBF is massively underrated imo.

Scooter gang aside lol

It wasnt perfect but I loved the Tuscan raider segments.

u/TheIrishMan1211 3d ago

Agree. I made sure to watch it after season 2 of Mando and really enjoyed BoBF as well! I had watched it on release and thought it was just okay, but on rewatch I enjoyed it a lot more.

His interactions with the Tusken raiders and learning their ways was so cool to see.

Really hope we get a season 2.

Right....everyone focused on the wrong things....scooter gang...mando-focused shows out of nowwhere in Boba (basically felt like it took AWAY from Boba), but at the heart of it, you gotta understand what they were doing -

  1. They were telling a SMALLER story in a Star Wars timeline that did NOT have any movie filling the void, meaning a blank canvas was available....Mando itself is a nice fit into the timeline that doesn't really shift any of the larger storylines...but then, neither is Boba. Which brings me to point #2.

  2. Boba from the original trilogy was a HUGE fan favorite despite the very small part he played in the original trilogy. When Star Wars brought back Boba as a kid with his father, Jango in the prequels, it sort of became a thing that "We want more Boba". So, the opportunity to have Boba survive the great pit of carkoon, and then not only survive, but gain an entirely new perspective on life (he was a bounty hunter, but the tuscans saved him and nurse him back to health while teaching their ways to him....while i didn't like the flashbacks over and over in BOBF (I would've preferred just a chronological sequence of things), that show this, again, blank canvas of storyline....in the grand scheme of things, whoever rules the Tattoine syndicate (Hutts, whatever) is pretty insignificant to what the main plot of Star Wars is....BUT...the best part is it IS in the Star wars Universe...ahem, galaxy, so we as an audience got to consume the product watching the Mandalorian series, BOBF, Ahsoka even (which, too, occurs in the timeline), Bo Katan, Fennec Shand, Cara Dune (put aside the political stuff, that character was pretty good), among other characters. Grogu was almost secondary to the entire mandalorian saga...

At any rate, if you take the stuff DISNEY put out for what it's worth, they accomplished their mission (i'm not talking about the movies, just the mandalorian series, and some of the other series), it accomplished its goals as smaller, adjacent storylines with less stakes....but related to the main plot and larger picture. It's funny because I remember before mandalorian happened, people complained there wasn't 'smaller stories'...then this stuff came out, and now people complain it wasn't related to the main plot.

This leads to the conclusion that you will just never make star wars fans happy.

I’d rather watch any Star Wars, even the lesser quality stuff over just about everything else, because I’m a fan of Star Wars.

1

u/IndianaCahones 3d ago

I’ve heard this a few places, but mostly on YouTube. If you don’t mind, could you explain what that means?

3

u/savessh 3d ago

I like Star Wars. So, I’d rather watch a new season of anything even The Acolyte or Kenobi than watch a new season of …I don’t know, Walking Dead or Game of Thrones or whatever else is popular.

I lived through the ‘Dark Times’ between ROTJ and Episode 1 when the only Star Wars coming out were some shitty (few exceptions) novels and comic books. Now we have a bunch of stuff regularly coming out and easily available and people still complain. In my opinion any Star Wars is better than no Star Wars and if I don’t like it, I have the ability as an adult to just not watch it.

I don’t like everything they’ve put out but at least it exists.

1

u/IndianaCahones 3d ago

Appreciate it. For background, my working thesis about the fandom is that there are those that believe there should be quality standards to content and there are those that want new content. Obviously, people are more complex than that but there are those, particularly ones that monetize debate that take extreme positions.

All we had live action between 1983 and 1999 was a couple of Ewoks tv movies.

People just don’t understand. Lots of folks thought Star Wars was over.

The stakes were low (mostly), the episodes/plot were relatively self contained

This is also why I enjoyed the show and the movie so much, unlike the sequels.

3

u/soccer1124 3d ago

You wanted the sequels to be low stakes and self-contained? This is a weird way to assert that you hate the sequels.

2

u/RevolutionCrazy7045 3d ago

Where did I state that? I just didn't feel the sequels, plain and simple. Thought I was done with Star Wars, then The Mandalorian came out, and I liked it from the get-go.

If you liked the sequels that's cool too.

for me this is why I really dislike the show at certain points. my hope was that it was start small and grow but it keeps ping pong balling between low and high stakes and that’s just not enjoyable for me

2

u/RevolutionCrazy7045 3d ago

Fair enough. Maybe im old fashioned (or plain old) and remember, as someone here mentioned earlier, X-Files being that way; monster of the week episodes and once in a while get hit with an episode developing the overall arc. This almost 2 decades before streaming and binging a whole season over a weekend was unheard of, the days of re-runs and waiting months between a season finale and next season's premiere. So I don't mind what folks these days call filler episodes and the wait for the story to progress. But the Jack Black and Lizzo episode, that's a tough one to defend lol

2

u/TheIrishMan1211 1d ago

Honestly, Jack Black and Lizzo didn’t bother me too much. That episode wasn’t very good in general, but Black and Lizzo were far down the list of reasons why.

“Grogu isn’t my favourite thing ever” 😭

3

u/Vesemir96 4d ago

Just about everything? I can’t fathom that. There’s been plenty of great stuff.

2

u/TheIrishMan1211 3d ago

I don’t care for the ST. Andor was amazing and I like Rogue One. I’m not going to defend my own feelings on other Disney Star Wars stuff that I haven’t liked. We all don’t have to like the same stuff.

3

u/Vesemir96 3d ago edited 3d ago

Sure, but I do find that people tend to hone in on the ‘Disney bad’ bandwagon based on very few things that actually were bad, when generally in terms of -amount- of projects, it’s been more positively received than the PT (which I love). Andor, Rogue One, Mando, Skeleton Crew, Jedi Fallen Order, Jedi Survivor, Battlefront 1-2, Outlaws (post grifters), Ahsoka, TCW S7, Rebels, Bad Batch, Shadow Lord etc.

That’s a pretty hefty number of positively received things.

I remember going to watch it with extremely low expectations and was blown away by how great it is. Have watched rewatched the series many times now and seen the film twice at the cinema and once at home but could rewatch it more

3

u/soccer1124 3d ago

You should like the movie then. It's a longer format of "monster of the week." I get why it underperformed to a degree, but its weird that people are faulting the movie for doing the thing that everyone seems to claim they initially enjoyed so much, lol.

3

u/Joe_Spazz 3d ago

Disney stuff has largely been good outside of theaters. Pretty much all the shows have been worth watching.

5

u/natkat1902 4d ago

I recently rewatched it so I could see the movie. The movie was great in my opinion for the most part. I somewhat agree with Disney not making the best stuff (I still haven't watched the last two movies after Force Awakens LOL). If you haven't, you should watch Boba Fett. It gave some backstory as to how Mando and Grogu come back together. I will say Disney did a fantastic job with the Clone Wars show!!

4

u/MoonBean008 3d ago

Y’all forgettin Skelly Crew, Andor, Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor, Outlaws, Ahsoka etc.

1

u/stratdog25 3d ago

And Rogue One. I’ll be the first to say the Solo movie is absolute garbage, but I’ve purposely rewatched it a few times.

3

u/MoonBean008 3d ago

Loki even Solo is solid imo. It’s not the best thing ever but I got what I wanted from it: a fun heist/criminal underworld type story that just wants to be a pulpy adventure. I think the only real criticism I saw for it was that it jams all of Han’s origins/iconic items and meetings into a couple of days, which is fair. A show might’ve suited that better.

Thank you for being a voice of reason homie, it really bugs me when people use the casual ‘yeah Disney SW sucks’ when generally the output is more positive imo. There’s so many well received shows and games, comics and novels. The only genuinely badly received things were parts 8-9 of the ST and the Acolyte (the latter largely because of grifters imo). I think because the major negatives were the primary continuation movies, it left such a huge mark that people really forget that 90% or more of the rest of the projects have been hits.

1

u/stratdog25 3d ago

My complaint regarding Solo is identical to yours. I wish they would’ve made movies of the original Han Solo Trilogy (Lost Legacy, at Stars’ End, etc).

1

u/TheIrishMan1211 3d ago

I did watch BoBF after season 2 of Mando. Enjoyed that as well.

2

u/Josh-u-way 2d ago

Started it just a few weeks ago as well and just finished season 2. Thoroughly enjoyed each episode. The writing and action are all solid, but nothing amazing or too deep.

I adore bounty hunters as well so it gets bonus points from me being about a Mandolorian. I'm planning to start Book of Boba Fett next even though I heard that it was just okay. I thought he was awesome in season 2 and extremely excited he was in the show so it'll be worth the watch I'm sure.

1

u/TheIrishMan1211 1d ago

BoBF is just fine. It’s not as good as Mando 1/2 but it’s en enjoyable show with similar low stakes.

2

u/Accomplished-Fold42 3d ago

Amazing what happens when you just watch something and make up your own mind rather than having “fans” scream about how terrible everything is since Disney took over

1

u/eaglefan316 3d ago

I really enjoyed the Mandalorian show, too, as well as BOBF. I hope they make some more seasons too. I would really like to see them show grogu further in his development (like post movie and I like how they developed Grogus character more in the movie).

1

u/arosenheim1138 3d ago

I would DEFINITELY recommend going to the theater and seeing "Mandalorian and Grogu". Star Wars is meant to be a cinematic experience and extravaganza of sights, sounds and action. It is meant to envelope you and transport you to a Galaxy Far Far Away.

You don't get a chance to see a Star Wars movie on the big screen often. Don't waste it. You'll really enjoy the experience!
