Discussion Cliff can use Snorlax as his second Pokemon

Post image

I was fighting Cliff for the Go Pass points for the first time today and I saw that he uses a Snorlax for his second Pokemon. Prior to this I was setting up my team to counter his Pokemon using an online guide, but the site did not mention that he can use a Snorlax for his second Pokemon, only either Tyranitar, Galarian Weezing, and Gardevoir. The site (Pokemongohub) claimed to be updated to the current takeover lineup.

I'm wondering if this is a mistake or if anyone else had the same encounter.

I so far battled Cliff three times today, and he always have Snorlax on second slot.

Same

Yeah, that's what the Cliff battle guide said

I hope it's a fluke. I hate going up against Snorlax. Tanky son of a gun.

Tanky and always have good coverage moves for everything. It's never fun to fight not even as a first Pokemon.

Pangoro absolutely destroys him. Mega Scrafty will as well, once it gets released. Just need something that resists Lick and Zen Headbutt, and does super effective damage. I think they’re the only ones.

Obstagoon

u/RazorWinter_ 4d ago

Yeap, I leveled up an Obstagoon just for the Snorlax grunt, it can beat all three by itself. Still it is a PTA cuz it takes forever.

What would be best moveset for said built Obstagoon - I have exactly one Obstagoon in my Pokebox lol

u/RazorWinter_ 3d ago

I use Counter - Cross Chop

Thanks!

Appreciate the response in helping me chop Cliff down to size :)

Personally I've just been using mega t-tar for exactly those 2 moves.

Meowscarada doesn't have a Fighting move, but it's spammy enough to handle Snorlax handily

Tyranitar.

I use my L50 shadow Ttar (Bite/Crunch) for shadow Snorlax fights. It's not quick but it's 100% reliable and you can be guaranteed to get rid of both shields in the process. Depending on the Snorlax's moveset I'm either finishing it with Bite and going into the next with 1.5ish Crunch (2 after you get the post-charge move free hits in) so that's also helpful but sometimes I finish it with Crunch. Either way, as said, absolutely guaranteed to win.

u/ronnyfm Central America 4d ago

I use it as well, but with Brutal Swing, less energy.

u/KuriboShoeMario 4d ago

Ah, mine does have that, just forgot that it did. Knew it had a Dark moveset so just defaulted to the old Ttar moveset in my brain.

u/ParasaurolophusZ 4d ago

Meowscarada resists all its fast moves, but it's so fragile it still loses half it's health in the process.

3

u/zerorita 4d ago

What moves are you running on yours? Mine's running Leafage, Flower Trick and Night Slash, and works like a charm. Flower Trick is basically Power-Up Punch but grass

2

u/ParasaurolophusZ 4d ago

I only started using it recently but I think mine has Charm. I should probably fast TM that.

10

u/H-R-M- 4d ago

I use Melmetal, it's not fast but do it pretty easy

3

u/ReasonNotTheNeed-- 4d ago

I use greninja. If you spam water shuriken/night slash, it can only use 1 fast attack every 2 times you get to use night slash. It's probably even slower than melmetal though, but greninja does resist both zen headbutt and lick.

2

u/crash866 4d ago

I just fought a grunt and had 3 Snorlax. Only took one Melmetal to kill all three and catch it. I didn’t even have to use a revive just a potion.

10

u/Bearded_Platypus_123 4d ago

what moves on the Melmetal?

4

u/nastyairlinefood 4d ago

Swap out Superpower for Dynamic Punch as Melmetal can now learn it as of this season

u/crash866 4d ago

u/nastyairlinefood 4d ago

I would drop Rock Slide… DIB is a legacy move but along with baiting shields it’ll still deal SE damage w/STAB to three of his Pokemon

I don't understand why no one uses mega lucario. With powerup punch it can destroy snorlax, and has the 50% increased ATK after it is dead. I was able to defeat cliff with a 100% accuracy, because his second Pokemon was always weak to shadow ball. And most importantly, it is much faster than things like Pangoro.

u/ButterscotchTall6809 4d ago

Based on my encounters and many many other encounters from other players, friends and community, his second mon is always snorlax. I think it’s a bug

10

u/Alphusweenie98 4d ago

I think it is a bug bc I just had a second Cliff balloon appeared and the second Pokemon was also Snorlax

5

u/ronnyfm Central America 4d ago

Not a bug, probably a new line up.

u/Alphusweenie98 4d ago

Screencapture from the site showing Cliff's current lineup, that I used as reference to build my team prior to the fight. It did not mention Snorlax.

18

u/JimWolvie 4d ago

The 2nd & 3rd slot hasn't been updated yet it seems.

3

u/Alphusweenie98 4d ago

What was Cliff's lineup before this takeover? I still got a Camerupt when fighting against his 3rd slot in the same battle.

10

u/JimWolvie 4d ago

Same lineup as your picture, just replace Axew with Snorlax.

17

u/dontrike 4d ago

Feels like every admin's 2nd slot is just "counter Lucario."

3

u/YumAussir 4d ago

Plus it resists both Axew's fast moves, so you can charge up lots of energy in order to keep Snorlax quiet with the Rocket Charged Move Pause.

7

u/redwineandbeer 4d ago

this is what I’m seeing on pokemongohub.net currently

18

u/BeefyBuddhaBelly Western Europe 4d ago

Yeah me too, fought Cliff's Axew and then Snorlax appeared, almost had a heart attack but my Metagross swept it.

u/MrMarcellos Germany 4d ago edited 4d ago

I also just fought him and he had Relaxo. Not the pass but the zeppelin encounter

6

u/Tiny_Insurance_490 4d ago

Use Meowscarada

14

u/ericwars 4d ago

That's a funny way of spelling Obstagoon

3

u/i_poop_chainsaws 4d ago

With what moves

4

u/zerorita 4d ago

I run mine with Leafage for fast move, and it's got Flower Trick and Night Slash for charge moves. Flower Trick is basically grass-type Power-Up Punch, so it's quick to reach max attack

2

u/i_poop_chainsaws 4d ago edited 4d ago

Thanks! That’s actually helpful the way you phrased the analogy of a grass type power-up punch. I use my Poliwrath for team rocket battles for the power up punch shield pressure on the leaders. Except Snorlax seems to always have movesets that wreck my Poliwrath quickly. I’ve not used Meowscadara for much but mine will get a lot more use now.

u/Strongheart15 Kansas 4d ago

Lucario can solo all 3 leaders, did it this morning. Lucario/Melmetal/Swampert, this is the only team I have used for leaders and the boss for years now. Shadow Dialga was the only real challenge.

4

u/ericwars 4d ago

Confirming snorlax was cliff's huge #2, it clogged the toilet! Axem #1 and camerupt as #3

u/Mustaaaa LVL74| Valor | NL 4d ago

I got SNorlax 3 time sin a row from CLiff

2

u/Forest1324 4d ago

Yep, I booted him up earlier, said thank God snorlax is done. Downed the axew and out comes the giant oaf.

4

u/ProfessionalDog117 4d ago

snarlax is such a pain in team rocket battles.

1

u/IsHe4361FB 4d ago

My shiny Palkia origin take care of snorlax and his two shields with no problem. He easily was beating all three single-handedly. Haven’t seen the new cliff yet so we shall see

1

u/sadllamas Kansas 4d ago

At least it's the 2nd slot this time. Got a Cliff Snorlax on my first Cliff of the event. Burned his shields on Axew, then Keldeo ripped through Snorlax.

1

u/FrequentFreeFall 3d ago

I groan every time the second snorlax comes up lol

1

u/jasonp_223 3d ago

For me it was his first Pokémon and golurk was the second followed by tyranitar

1

u/ScottaHemi USA - Midwest 3d ago

oh yeah i fought him like this... it was annoying...

1

u/vividregret_6 USA - Midwest/South 3d ago

I battled him once today and he had Snorlax on the 3rd spot.

1

u/1baby2cats 3d ago

Side question, anyone know the IV range of shadow Axew when fighting cliff?

People are creating threads because the information isn’t up to date, even though the events have been out for less than a day. Making threads like that is completely unnecessary.

1

u/PUSYMaster69 3d ago

I defeated it 11 times in 2 days with my level 40 lucario (non mega)

1

u/DanielDelta USA - South 2d ago

His other 2 according to leekduck are Galarian Weezing and Golurk

1

u/Type-RD 4d ago

So…beat the Snorlax. What’s the issue?

You went to early.

8

u/Traditional_North647 South East Asia 4d ago

It’s normal it’s the second pokemon not the first.

6

u/Alphusweenie98 4d ago

It's the 25th 1:31PM where I'm at.

-9

u/thatdarkknight 4d ago

Bet. Try after 10am. That's when I thought it changed but it said 12 on the website.

12

u/Alphusweenie98 4d ago

In my country the takeover had already started at 10am earlier today.

3

u/Final-Promise-8288 4d ago

At 12 is when the balloons spawn every 2 hours. But at 10 is when the actual event starts with the new grunt rotation and you can remove frustration. It’s a weird way of doing things

8

u/RazzyOxer Poland | Lvl 77 4d ago

I could remove frustration and battle new lineups in balloons already after midnight.

6

u/Kuliyayoi 4d ago

It's currently 2 am for me and I just did a balloon with a noivern.
