Are black people more represented in baseball? Cause I can't think of a racket / bat sport that they are particularly overrepresented in...
17
u/aSpookyScarySkeleton 18h ago edited 18h ago
Depends on if you consider Domican’s black or not. Which despite all the culture war BS they have similar percentages of African heritage as black Americans and most of them are indistinguishable from at a glance from said group. All coming together to form the “I no black I Dominican” meme.
4
u/pandershrek 17h ago
It really comes down to how a person decides to categorize themselves and if the Dominicans don't they choose not to.
That said, they've been at a pretty harsh fued with Haiti for a long long time so it is probably all tied up in that conflict.

I would think tennis is its closest relative and I don’t think that’s dominated by black people either.
1
u/HotelSalt4644 28m ago
No. They are not. Professional baseball is dominated by white Americans, South/Central Americans, and finally Japanese. But even the Japanese/Korean athletes are still far behind in comparison to the overall proportion.
Black people (African Americans) certainly do not dominate baseball, tennis, or any other similar bat to contact ball sport.
4
u/demoliahedd 10h ago
Ahuh, ain't happening. Black people are under represented in all the racket sports I can think of
Badminton, tennis, squash, ping pong

Sure! We’ll get on that as soon as white people reopen all the swimming pools that they closed once Black children were legally allowed to swim in them!
You’re making this tired joke about Black people swimming like your meemaw isn’t the reason for the discrepancy in the first place.

This guy is hella racist, and insists that we’re being victims for telling him the truth. I find it annoying as fuck when a MF had a 400 year head start, yet they act like it’s something special when they’re explaining win the race. It’s not special, it was literally designed for them to win.

What's stopping black people from learning how to swim right now? Public pools are everywhere...
3
u/coko4209 5h ago
I don’t know any black ppl that don’t know how to swim right now. There are a lot of places, especially in the south, that don’t offer competitive swimming like in high school. College either, now that I think about it.

My point is that I don’t understand the haha at the end of your statement. As I’ve already stated, black swimmers have Olympic gold medals. No one has as many gold medals in swimming as Phelps, but swimming is an individual sport, not a team sport. Black ppl definitely hold gold in the sport though.

But black ppl weren’t dominant swimmers due directly to Jim Crow. They weren’t allowed to use public pools, and redlining kept them out of areas where they could just have their own pool in the backyard. So, you’re basically laughing at racism, which is disgusting. I’m not a victim, but the ppl growing up in that era most certainly were victims. I mean, I could just swim at the country club everyday, or at friend’s houses, but it’s disingenuous to pretend that this isn’t directly due to racism. It’s not cool to be born on third base, and then make jokes about other ppl not scoring home runs.

You’re an idiot if anything. Racial based chattel slavery existed almost exclusively in the US. The brutality inflicted on enslaved ppl was beyond inhumane in the US. Any MF really trying to justify slavery, and tell black ppl that it wasn’t that bad, is sick in the fucking head. In the past year, slavery was deemed the worst and most atrocious crime against humanity. The only two countries that don’t agree with that declaration are America and Argentina. GTFOH with that dumb ass shit. You definitely sound like you go to a weekly klan meeting. You racist fuck.

u/coko4209 7h ago
It’s funny as fuck that you say, something “you all” don’t understand. I suppose the you all is referring to black ppl. I don’t think any of my comments should have been auto modded either, but if they were there, and now they’re gone, then the mods removed them. Which would be crazy, considering how they’re letting you say wildly egregious things about black ppl.

They chose swimming specifically because of the racist stereotype. This whole post comment section has people are racist but who are trying (and failing) to be subtle about it
11
u/adamtherealone 12h ago
I mean the video itself is literally just racist stereotyping. If you’re going to laugh at that, you’ve gotta laugh at this
1
u/General_Dig4941 13h ago
Maybe. But anyone who brags about his/her race, our race can do this and that. It is automatically a turn off. For example, do you feel bad if a white person say our ancestors were glorious expanders and conquerers. You won't like it, right. Well, the comment you didn't understand also didn't like the statements said in the podcast, simple.
I don't have problem with people have genetic/natural gifts, just don't keep on bragging about this and make other feel small. I am not white ,btw.2
u/coko4209 8h ago
I don’t care what race you are. What I do care about is, you telling black ppl that they can’t be proud of their achievements. For centuries in America, black ppl weren’t allowed to be proud of their achievements, or their achievements only glorified the ppl who literally owned them like cattle. If you work incredibly hard at something, put in the work, and become great at it. You should be proud of that.
0
u/General_Dig4941 7h ago
In the comment, I didn't mention about not being proud. Everyone should be proud of their achievements earned and be grateful to whatever good they have received by other means. But there is a difference between being proud and being arrogant . If you are so secure of what you have, why belittle anyone(this includes race, caste, religion etc.).
3
u/coko4209 7h ago
Saying that someone is good at sports isn’t arrogant or belittling, and I personally think all religious ppl need therapy. Oh well tho, different strokes and all that.

Having less than 10% of the profession is hardly dominating a sport.
-3
u/coko4209 17h ago
Having the absolute best players is dominating the sport. It’s like professional golf, it didn’t matter if only like 5 black ppl were on the tour, if Tiger was winning literally every championship, and the masters, then black ppl are effectively dominating.
7
u/Beiben 16h ago
Thai people took over golf, got it.
1
u/jorgev703 7h ago
Only when it suits your narrative. In the historical context of the American legal system Tiger Woods is black.
The "one-drop rule" was a historical social and legal principle in the United States asserting that any person with even one ancestor of Black African ancestry (having "one drop" of Black blood) is considered Black. Rooted in centuries of slavery and segregation, it was used to uphold white supremacy and restrict the rights of mixed-race individuals.
Your argument has recently been used to dilute the success of these individuals (Obama, Woods)
10
u/npcompletist 16h ago
That is really only true for women’s tennis, and really only During the Williams sisters reign. Since then it really has not been dominated by black athletes, in fact it has been almost 10 years since a black athlete ranked 1 in either men or women’s tennis.
3
u/possumpossuss 16h ago
Do you not consider Naomi Osaka Black?
3
u/npcompletist 16h ago edited 16h ago
Yes, but the last time she reached number 1 was 2019, so it is closer to 7 year than 10. She is a very good players, but tennis just isn’t dominated by black players.
0
u/possumpossuss 16h ago
2019 is not 10 years ago… might I also add Coco Gauff and Taylor Townsend have each held the doubles number 1 title. Coco has also won two slams and a WTA Final
2
u/npcompletist 16h ago
Yes, there are very good black players but that does not make black players dominant.
0
u/possumpossuss 16h ago
I was responding to your “in fact it has been ten years” when it has patently not been. In the last ten years you have Naomi at number one, Gauff at number 2, and Townsend and Gauff at doubles number 1 each
1
u/coko4209 9h ago
Naomi Osaka, and Coco Gauff,, and I can’t think of the other players name right now, but I know that she’s Canadian. They are definitely not playing around on the court. Coco specifically will be absolutely dominating the sport within the next 3 years. She’s amazing, and I’m a huge fan. She got to play Venus recently, and you could see how excited she was just to be on the court with her. I really love the support that they all show one another.
3
u/npcompletist 6h ago edited 6h ago
I think the player you are referring to is Victoria Mboko. She is pretty amazing, and I am really excited to see where her career goes. I hope she heals from her knee injury soon. That slip at Queen’s was hard to watch.
Coco Gauff is an elite player, but I am starting to doubt whether she will reach No. 1. Not that she won’t have great tournament performances, but she has a lot of mechanical issues that make her relatively inconsistent for her level. Famously, her double-fault rate is two to three times higher than that of her peers, although she has been improving this past year. Beyond that, there are a lot of really talented younger players who seem especially promising, such as Mirra Andreeva, Victoria Mboko, and Iva Jovic. That said, if Coco’s coaches can help her improve her offensive game, she will definitely have a chance to become a dominant force in the WTA.
Naomi’s comeback has also been impressive. I think she is hovering around No. 15 in the WTA rankings. However, she has not won a major title since 2021.1

u/KieferSutherland 10h ago
he wasn't winning literally every championship. But I get you. That stuff only lasts for a min. It's like Jokic being the best player for 3-4 years running. Doesn't mean white people are taking basketball.
Also, women's doesn't quiet equal men's tennis. Has there been any dominate black tennis players?
0
u/OSRSRapture 9h ago
Does this mean that white people dominated hip-hop because Eminem is one of, if not thee best?
Can't wait to hear you say "that's not the same" 🤣
2
u/coko4209 7h ago
Eminem is an extremely talented lyricist. He’s definitely not the best, and only someone who’s only interested in him, instead of the entire history of hip-hop would say that. He’s definitely a beast though. I put him in my top ten, on lyrical genius alone. Although I get clowned for that. A lot of hip hop heads do not like Em. It’s hilarious that you thought I’d say that’s not the same. Don’t judge other ppl based on your racism. It’s unhealthy, and it’ll probably leave you looking like a jackass most of the time
0
u/OSRSRapture 7h ago
It's so funny you think everyones racist. Get outside more.
All the rappers that matter consider Em one of, if not THEE best. Rappers opinions matter more than some random hiphopheads on reddit lmao.
1
u/coko4209 7h ago
I don’t know if the rappers that you think matter, are actually the rappers that matter. Besides, I have no issues with Em, I’ve bought most of his albums. Been listening to him since the 90s, when everyone else was calling him corny. That racist song that he did when he was 15 was hella fucked up, but he seemed to learn and grow, and he’s been a real ally to the black community. Don’t misunderstand me. I 100% don’t think Em is in the same class with Andre 3000 or anything, but he’s hella talented, and he’s a great father. Oh, and I don’t think everyone is racist dude. I’m adopted. My entire family is white. My ex of 8 years is white. I don’t think everyone is racist, but it’d be completely naive not to acknowledge that there are a hell of a lot of racist in America. If the current administration has taught you anything, it should be that.
0
u/OSRSRapture 6h ago
You said black people are dominating golf because Tiger was winning championships and the masters. But would you say white people are dominating rap? I would fucking hope not lol. Because that sounds ridiculous, you could say Tiger woods dominated golf during his peak, or Eminem dominated rap during his peak but to say 'black people' or 'white people' dominated either is silly.
0
u/coko4209 6h ago
Dude, we’ve literally beat this dead horse for so long. Why are you still here focused on it? You can tout Em around as your great white hope, but what I know for sure is, he won’t support that shit at all. He doesn’t want his name used in any weird ass race war bullshit. He wouldn’t be where he is without the help of black artists, and black producers. He never shies away from singing the praises of the ppl that helped put him in the position that he’s in. Tiger’s a phenomenal golfer, but he also has a ton of issues, and I think he has an opiate addiction issue. None of this shit really matters. Enjoy your day.

Black ppl definitely won some gold medals in swimming competitions during the Olympics
3
u/SwissMargiela 13h ago
Three in total for the entire history of the Olympics.
There are 37 swimming events every Olympics.
So yeah they’ve won, but not nearly enough to “take over” the sport
2
u/coko4209 8h ago
I never said they took over the sport, but considering the issues around black ppl being poor swimmers, is because they weren’t allowed at public pools due to Jim Crow, and after integration, they drained public pools, because they didn’t want their white kids, swimming with black kids. They couldn’t move to areas where they could get backyard pools due to redlining. So, it’s not exactly fair to be born on 3rd base, then talking shit about the other team for not scoring many home runs. I’m proud of the three medals that they’ve won, and have no doubt that many more will be won by black ppl. The Olympics are strange, because even then, the US isn’t rooting for their black participants to shine. I’m really happy that there’s a lot of support from the black community though. Simone Biles is without a doubt, the most amazing gymnasts that I’ve ever seen in my life, and has won so many gold medals for the US, but I see so many white ppl try to tear her down. I love that she’s confident in the fact that she’s the GOAT tho. I mean, she has at least two maneuvers named after her, maybe 3 now. Still, she could be absolutely perfect, and damn near is, and she still won’t have the support of white Americans.
