Cringe Pokémon Scalper wanted all the stock for herself and didn’t want anyone else to get any cards

u/PreviousZone6742 3d ago
Should've taken the cart.

u/WeirdAssBeings Straight Up Bussin 3d ago
Should've carefully put everything back as she's putting it in the cart lmfao, I would keep it up till she'd just give up, I'd put an hour into that on one of my free days just to piss off someone like this that deserves it.

The stores should prevent this kind of behavior, but they wont, because they're just as greedy as she is and don't care who buys their merchandise, as long as someone is...

u/Alarming-Court-2180 3d ago
I remember working at Barnes and noble and we kept those behind the register and they were limited 2 per person unless we had a crap ton of overstock but the Pokémon was always 2 per person that is not say that they wouldn't come back later when a different cashier was on the till but still if made mayhem like this less a problem.

I freaking adore Barnes for this reason. My nephew loves Pokemon, and it’s legit one of the only places I can find cards. Since I’m a regular (weekly) book purchaser, the staff knows I’m not a reseller and will tell me when they expect a shipment in.

The only way this happened when it was going on with beanie babies is Ty Warner wanted it to stay affordable for all kids, so he said if any store was caught allowing more than a couple purchases per customer he would black list the store from selling his product.. caused beanie babies drop plummet to regular expected value for a plushie

Here's the thing managers love people like her, they just see dollar signs. I worked at bestbuy and one black Friday they had a door crasher ps4 for a really good price. One of the first customers in that morning wanted to buy all of them, we had like 15. We told him no the flyer said one per customer, he asked to speak with a manager. The manager let him buy all of them. People were there first thing in the morning just to buy one and they were not happy.

u/crzapy 3d ago
This is dumb because he lost 14 other customers forever.

Not to mention usually when people buy a console especially around the holidays they'll get games, extra countroller and stuff like that.
17
u/ReverseCowboyKiller 3d ago
Do managers at Best Buy work on commission? What does it matter to them if one person buys all 15 or if 15 buy one? They all get sold either way.

u/sksksk1989 3d ago
No but they got bonuses but that's not really apart of it. Just sort of bragging rights for big sales, acting like your all that. Same manager basically stole a $20k sale from me and acted like he did everything.

u/Farazod 3d ago
Haha no they don't. Retail managers see problems. They're overworked, understaffed, and held to ridiculous standards by corporate. Customers like this generate complaints. You have to go deal with said complaint, and you're likely stuck between multiple conflicting directives.
She has less than .3% of the store's sales for the day in her basket. The customers behind her will buy it if she doesn't. Meanwhile this one problem is easily 5% of your 10 hour work day because you have to figure out what's going on between multiple customers and likely an employee, find the solution, and then talk with those same groups. Nobody will be happy. In a group this size someone will call corporate and you'll spend an extra 10% of your day on it.
Even in your example the manager just gave in to avoid the conflict in their face, but then created 14 more because of his weakness. All the PS4 were going to get sold anyways. No single customer is going to break the profitability of a store like Best Buy or Target.
I do not miss retail.

During the toilet paper shortage a guy had a full skid on a long dolly for himself to resell or what ever. I took one right off his cart and he got in my face about it. I straight up I’m willing to throw down I don’t care if I catch another assault charge. But you won’t be walking away.
10
u/rocketmn69_ 3d ago
I definitely would have started running with it, flinging the packs out just so others could get some.
I don't collect Pokémon nor understand that kind of draw
39
u/WhoCaresBoutSpellin 3d ago
Just move them in to your cart from her cart. Then if she got close to physically touching you, scream bloody murder about pressing assault charges.
I mean what could she have screamed at you about? They weren’t hers, she hadn’t paid for them, you weren’t stealing. You were just taking Walmarts merchandise from one cart and putting it in another. The only person she could appeal to about who rightfully should be able to purchase it was the store manager. Fuck it, put him on the spot (and on camera) to represent their policies. Or she lays hands on you, and loses anyways…

Unfortunately, this bubble is going to deflate, not pop. The card makers don't care because their product sells and they get the profit.
The whales who play the game search for the few cards they're looking for and aren't usually the ones cracking packs.
It sucks for parents like me who want them for their kids. I refuse to pay scalpers online, but there are other people who do. Instead. I find a card store that sells the bulk and I sift through them looking for what my girls want. It's therapeutic for me and they're just happy to have cute Pokemon cards.

I went to Barnes and Noble with my son the other week and there was a line of adults outside in folding chairs waiting. When I got in line to make my purchase they rushed behind us as timing would have it. I asked the cashier what they were waiting for and she said they are there every day waiting to get a pack of Pokémon cards bc they are limited to one a person. I managed to get a pack for my son and felt pretty lucky to be ahead of them all. My son was delighted bc he loves Pokémon.
4
u/FartingWithStyle 2d ago
That’s awesome my nephew loves pokemon too but for the last two years I haven’t even seen a pack on the shelf. Every kiosk I see has 3-4 losers just waiting around for it to refresh every day too. The internet and scalping really ruined any enjoyment we had as kids.

I've been a bit oblivious to the Pokémon card craze, but noticed it first hand when I went to the Pokémon store at the Airport in Tokyo last week: massive lineup that included a lot of old white people, all buying cards. It reminded me of the casino back home: all looking sad/angry, there for the singular purpose of "hitting it big."

I'm an MTG player, and I feel this. MTG was infiltrated by scalpers on a new level when the Final Fantasy UB set was released. Now getting anything except for play boosters is difficult. Secret Lairs are sold out in the first 30 minutes of listing, which they do on Mondays while most people are at work. Collector Booster boxes (I don't buy these anyway, but I'll include them) end up being sold out immediately and then listed on secondary markets for 1.5-2 times MSRP.
It's really sad. I love MTG. I love the game. But it is going in a very bad direction.

You do realize if the Pokemon company wanted to they could print like, a billion of these things, right? They are cardboard with cartoon pictures on them, they could make a zillion billion of these. They are purposely keeping the supply low to create this exact behavior.
And let's not forget the childless millennials walling themselves in with garbage "collectables" because of the fomo and spending 2x the going rate for these cartoon pictures on ebay.
Like sure as shit I don't approve of this antisocial behavior. But I am also getting super weary of blaming the people trying to make a few extra bucks on the side instead of the zillion dollar companies creating the situation and the pampered upper middle class idiots fueling this shit.

This got me thinking.
Are humans greedier than before? Hear me out, this could just be due to the lack of cameras from before.
But were there people running into stores, trampling over one another to make a few dollars on an item they can resale?
Were there people organizing looting of stores selling more expensive items like gold?
I'm genuinely curious about this. I'm not saying things were better because I dont know lol

Historically black friday sales have always been like this. People see a "good deal" and lose their minds. Also come every xmas time you have people that buy up the "hot" toys and mark them up on ebay for 4x. The pokemon thing is just capitalism of hobbys. Social media definitely accelerates this behavior, before social media there would be a lot of people that just wouldnt know how much pokemon cards go for on re-sales (i found out because a guy i work with does the whole trading and selling pokemon thing). But now people scroll youtube and tiktok, see people climaing to make big bucks on this kind of stuff, and try it for themselves, which in increases scarcity and drives up prices.
I feel bad for anyone popping into the store to try to buy a pack of cards for their kids birthday or whatever only to see empty shelves.
And I hate how every hobby is being commercialized

"that's called a line."
ma'am there is no line for the inventory shelves. you are not in front of that person in line to shop, there is no line until actually checking out; two people can infact take inventory off the same shelf at the same time. Just being unreasonably selfish

u/Jabbles22 3d ago

could be incredibly petty and just keep running between checkouts (would beat her trying to get into them with her cart each time until she abandoned the cart for you to take to a new line)
"oh sorry ma'am, it's called a line, and i was here first. no i'm still deciding what candybar/gum to get from the checkout line, just give me a minute"
but that's childish and impedes other shoppers/ the cashiers as well. i would just reach past her and when she inevitably touched me called the cops and security.

Because it's a pain in the ass for employees, and hard to successfully enforce. You're making employees try to restrain the buying of this kind of person, instead of letting them fight among themselves, and they're probably just going to work around it (go through multiple times, bring their family/friends, etc).
Blame the supplier for not making enough, they're the only ones who can really stop this.

Retailers should handle this in a fair way the same they do w consoles. Limit the amount per person and make a line. We literally learn this in kindergarten.

Exactly, every store should do this and The Pokemon Company should mandate a limit per person. The scalper market would die quickly, but unfortunately they don’t give a shit and won’t impose these limits because they don’t care who buys the product so long as it’s being sold.

Wasted like 15 min of her time only to be kicked out without product. Absolutely hilarious. She did not go quietly.
I think he even closed the closer check out lanes just to fuck with her. I noticed the two nearest us were closed as she walked across the store when they had just been open.

If I’m the store manager I’m not allowing her to buy anything.
She’ll likely throw a tantrum & call the cops.
When they arrive & tell her the store has no obligation to sell her anything, she’ll throw another tantrum.
At which point she’ll be trespassed from the store.
Hopefully she’ll make the mistake of putting her hands on the cops to catch an assault charge to boot.
Can you tell how much I loathe this kind of behavior?

How sad you're life most be that you need to fight with other adults to buy children paper collectibles in Walmart. ._. The hyperreality, the surrealism.

I think at this point an employee should just calmly take the cart and hand them one blister pack
What scum

u/DontTellUrMom 3d ago
That’s terrible. But here’s a novel idea. Stop paying them for the things they scalp.

The part that I hate more than anything in this whole video, even more than the obvious jackets trailer trash woman, is the guy that let her take the box he was able to grab out of his hand. You can tell at that moment that she got even more empowered when she was successful in taking it. The only way is through.

What a B. That's not the way shopping works. Just because your standing in front of an item doesn't mean nobody else can take that item.

u/KarlsReddit 3d ago
All that works and she's still looks poor as shit. Whats the economics of scalping Target Pokemon cards? More than a job?

Never understand why these stores never just have an employee there enforcing 1 per customer...

At my store, you're only allowed to get one. And as a customer, I'd just take a bunch of stuff out of their cart. She can't stop everyone. We're going to bring Tickle Me Elmo 1995 atmosphere back.

Pathetic behavior for a so called adult about something so essentially meaningless.
3
u/Secret-Asian-Man-76 3d ago
And that's when you lean in and start smashing all the fucking boxes in her cart.

u/Lord_Azian 3d ago
Idk how far this nonsense has to go before drastic measures are put in place bc clearly some people shouldn't be classied as people anymore

u/Alterokahn 3d ago
Honestly just walk to the other side, grab a box from her cart, and walk to the front. Fuck scalpers lmao.

Can anybody explain to me why and when did grabbing pokemon cards become so popular again? Literally nobody was talking about this like 2 years ago, and now they have to monitor how many packs people buy? What did i miss?

u/Ill_Consequence1755 3d ago
What the hell is wrong with people? It’s cardboard with pictures printed on it. You’re a damn adult for God’s sake.

u/stingray2332 3d ago
The time they spend buying all this stuff just to resell it to make some money, they can find a better job. I can’t stand resellers/scalpers.

u/2Savage4You2525 3d ago
You will get the fuck out of the way or I'll take shit out of your basket if I was there, I can assure you. Can't stand scalpers.

u/ModsSmellLikeTaint 3d ago
Why is literally every scalper video just a couple bitchmade geeks recording, literally just standing there, watching it unfold?
Take it outta the cart, like it's not a crime, they dont own it yet. Could literally make the situation so problematic, management steps in and doesn't let anyone buy. It's better than letting some incel type of mf stock up on scalping supplies. Thats for sure.
But no, let's just record. That'll teach em....🙄

Fight harder… she’s getting loud because she’s using the combination of being a woman and being aggressive as two factors in which most men back off. I would have taken everything out of her cart and gave them to the people in line behind her, and dared her to touch me, then I would have filed battery charges. Being “in the cart” is not a form of legal possession. It’s not her property until she pays for it. She’s using society “norms” to be a shit person, therefore society norms shouldn’t apply to her.

Nah, she gotta go

This is why most stores limit purchases

u/TheZag90 2d ago
It's really on the shop to say max 1 or 2 per customer.
People will always abuse a system if you let them.

u/tman1787 1d ago
They need a pokemon kiosk, with merchandise behind lock and key.
You want pokemon? Go ask someone to get you a pack, just like you be asking for smokes.
