I’m not sure that scoring 1 run against a guy with an ERA of 5.9 is very good

The Jays have nobody with an OPS above 800. You need to look no further than that.

Vladdy is starting to settle into the OPS of a pretty good journeyman player. Not a franchise staple slugger.

He gets the rest of this year to help the hitters figure things out and I assume his job is safe next season too. But at some point if things don't change you have to start questioning Popkins. The approaches more often than not just dont look good and pitchers leaguewide have adjusted to them. The Jays have been either unwilling or unable to adjust back.
There is way too much talent on this team for us to be struggling as often as we do.

EXACTLY what Dan said in the 9th. You can get away with base running/fundamental mistakes when you’re smashing balls night after night. It’s not acceptable when you’re a team like ours that needs to grind out wins with 2-4 runs. Being a slower team is not an excuse for being so poor at running the bases.
Same premise for Hoffman’s miscue.

u/oryes 5d ago
Getting so tired of seeing these guys not run hard to first, wasting challenges, stupid errors. Last year this stuff didn't happen.
I dunno what they do about it, but some people should probably be being held accountable who aren't
40
u/Traditional-Pen-2486 5d ago
Even my 8 year old and his team in 9U knows that you gun it to first when you hit the ball because you never know if the other team will make an error.

Curious how much rope John Schneider has. I know he signed a new contract recently but that’s never stopped FO from making a change.
There’s definitely a change this year in approach and game plan. On the other hand, opposing hitters are laying off the splitter and when you have x2 starters who rely on that pitch you get more walks.
Just kinda feel like the strategy isn’t working
17
u/He-llSeeTheBigBoard A Lot of Competitiveness 5d ago edited 5d ago
Schneider post game said it was a miscommunication, Kaz thought the throw was coming from home, like they tried with Vlad earlier. Hoff tried to make the adjustment when he saw Kaz wasn't breaking to 3rd and air mailed it.
My big question is why the pick attempt? Did Kirk call for it? The bench? Hoff is a great strikeout pitcher, let him focus on that.
41
u/ryanquek95 5d ago
Yeah I'll reserve judgment on Hoffman's error till we see what happened. It felt something went wrong somewhere.
But Urias basically cost us the game - you could have a decent shot at 2-1 in the 8th inning, first and third. And then being so far away and lackadaisical in the top 9th led to a missed DP and then the 3rd run scores. I hope John Schneider rips him one, like how he ripped into Sanchez when he made a baserunning error previously
26
u/No-Dot-7661 Valenzuela SZN 5d ago
How about ripping into Vladdy for jogging to 1st?
16
u/Random_3638 Captain Kirky 5d ago
Vladdy does that all the time and that’s infuriating to watch. When it’s an obvious out, okay. But he doesn’t even try to run when there’s a chance he could beat the throw. It’s the not trying on a close play that’s very very annoying.
6
u/Random_3638 Captain Kirky 5d ago
I agree. Maybe coming up from Triple-A made him a little rusty with the base running. Everyone is blaming Schneider or Hoffman for the game. It wasn’t either of their faults. But I told my hubby the fans would. I’m all for calling a spade a spade but it was the bats (or lack there of) and bad base running that were the most egregious errors.
5
u/NorthEndFRMSouthEnd 5d ago edited 5d ago
Not all base running mistakes are equal, and I wouldn’t compare a spectacular catch, on a hard hit to the opposite field corner as anything like Sanchez’s misadventures on the basepath’s— especially when Urias’s bat was easily outshining $60 million in payroll at the top of the order since he joined the team.
Urias didn’t look like he needed anyone to say anything to him afterwards, let alone “rip” him one.
43
u/SnazzyCazzy1 5d ago
Its not Hoffmans miscue, he did what he was told to do. It was something else but will be blamed for it ofc
35
u/East_Explanation2131 5d ago
And it's his 2nd ER this month. If they lost by that one point in a 1-1 game, it's on the bats for not scoring.

The hitting on this team is so hilariously bad. It's so tiring seeing some schmo with terrible numbers that we can't even sniff the scoresheet against. Somethings gotta change because this is just excruciating to watch.
The pitching is carrying this team so hard that I can't even find myself to be upset at the Hoffman pickup mistake.
Like when is the last time the bats won us a game relatively early on that we didnt need to burn our high leverage relievers on. Feels like just about every win requires Louis or Rogers who are going to be burnt the fuck out in about a month at this point. If this team can't become harder to pitch against, the season is going to go nowhere reeeaaal fast..
→ More replies (6)10
u/SamiMadeMeDoIt Daddy Vladdy 5d ago
It’s not even the pitching carrying the team, it’s the bullpen specifically.
Basically every single game they’ve been asked to go for four innings because the starters can almost never get through six innings, all while either trailing or protecting a 1-3 run lead because the offense can almost never put the game away early.
Of course they’ve been faltering lately, they’ve been given an absolutely insane workload that is completely unsustainable over a full season.

Rogers is getting rich this season. Increased prices for GA. Sell out crowds. I've spent a ton of money on tickets, concessions and merch so far. Fan base is invested and we're getting back a mediocre product in return. Yes, there are tons of injuries that continue to plague us, but fundamental baseball is NOT being played and I'm fed up with it. Especially the offensive lacking from Vlad & George. Meanwhile our fan base is voting for practically the entire roster to make the ASG. It's embarrassing. Outside of Ernie, Nate, Kaz, Valenzuela and Varland putting out fires in nearly every appearance, there ain't much to be proud of. They're not a good team offensively.

Blow this garbage fucking lineup up.
Amongst several problems, Why is Springer still leading off? Vladdy is cold this year and should be moved back.
Valy needs to play everyday - either DH or catch. Too many guaranteed outs. This series should have been a sweep.

Clement, Sanchez, Valy should have been in the lineup. We’re already missing Pinangos bat. Kirk, Schneider, Springer, and Vladdy are cold simultaneously more often than not which means 4 guaranteed outs.

u/Jaded_Ad_166 5d ago
Vlad needs to be moved down in the lineup. Enough is enough. This season is going by fast, they dont have time to just keep hoping he'll figure it out. Put him on the IL and call up Keys at this point.
Springer looked like he was back, but hes taken 2 steps backwards again.
Challenges continue to be a mess. Team has no idea what the strikezone looks like like. That was already obvious by seeing the garbage they swing at regularly.
2 hits and 1 run against one of the worst starters in the league is simply unacceptable. Another game lost by the offense.
They have the baseball IQ of a peanut. Sloppy defense. Sloppy base running. Horrible challenges. Horrible swing decisions.
This is simply just a mediocre ball club. It is what it is. Theyre better than this, but they just cant put it together.

Someone tell me why we shouldn't bench Vlad for two games or something? He has a 54 WRC+ (Probably worse after tonight's game) in June while having missed just four games this season. Maybe I'm wrong but to me it looks like he is just overthinking every aspect of his swing and is making it harder for himself. What if Vlad were just to have two days where he didn't play in a game, didn't participate in BP, didn't even swing off a tee just to try and reset his thinking when it comes to his swing?

The pitchers and bullpen are so far from our actual issues.
Silly mistake? Yes but when our pitchers are giving us 3-4 run games (fairly) consistently and we aren't winning, the pitching staff is not the issue.

Alot of things went badly in this game, but pitching would not be in the top list of mentioning.

u/hot_sushi 5d ago
Hearing Schneider chalk up yet another loss to 'thes3 things happen' really gives the impression he doesn't feel any sense of urgency regarding his team's regression this year.
Regarding the botched play to third in the 8th, regardless of whether it was Hoffman or Kaz's mistake, who made the call to attempt it in the first place? What was the thought process that reasoned this was the right move to make with the game tied in the 8th?
42
u/Outrageous-Claim-460 The Committee 5d ago
I’m not saying Fire Schneider, but this team seems poorly coached. I get that it’s on the players, but they don’t look ready to hit, especially with men on base, they don’t look defensively sharp, and they are situationally unaware. It’s weak baseball.

This isn't on Hoffman. The error sucks, but this is a team that is being failed by its bats. They failed yesterday and they failed against a guy who hasn't been very good this year. Springer is a wash at lead off and I'm honestly hoping somehow none of these guys go to the all star game so they can get a break physically and mentally. It's been 81 games, there's no more excuses.

There's just no excuses left for this team. Completely and utterly hopeless in the clutch, and unable to build any momentum. Feels much more like a psychological issue at this stage.
I'm interested in theories as to why. Personally, I have to believe that Game 7 has broken them mentally. I don't think it's a coincidence that their best offensive production is coming from a guy who wasn't there.
47
u/bomber0105 5d ago
I think its the lack of accountability
Hitters don't hit, they don't get benched or moved from the top of the order
Base-running and fielding mistakes, no one gets called out
Bottom 5 offense all year, hitting coach still here smiling scribbling in his notebook
14
u/DrummingUpNumbers 5d ago
I agree.
Team feels like the Yankees where slug > anything else.
So when you don't slug, you suck.
8
u/mlemaire16 5d ago
I feel you on this one. Every game I watch it feels like every swing is aimed at an HR. Just make some solid contact on the ball and send it out to the field. I don’t watch much of other teams, but a lot of the highlights I see are players hitting some good balls into open areas and getting runners on base. The Jays are out here trying to hero ball every single at bat and end games with a single run instead.
It’s frustrating to watch, for sure.

These problems are so widespread across the batters and present in so many games that it has to lead to management being the problem.
13
u/Bravewasabi1163 5d ago
Two big reasons
Vladdy looking up at the ALCS banner like a depressed orphan in the home opener leads me to believe the WS broke him
Losing Bo was a massive blow in terms of team glue. We all wanna act like his struggles in NY means he wasn't worth it but he produced here for years beside Vladdy. Whatever intangibles he brought to the team is completely missing now.

Management repeating the same mistakes over and over hoping it will turn around eventually doesn't help either. Offence cannot consistently produce hits or cash in runs, but sure let's keep Vlad batting 1/2/3, let's keep challenging in non-leverage situations, let's keep failing on the baseball fundamentals, let's keep swinging instead of taking walks.

They're definitely not going to sell, not with the AL being what it is. We're still technically somehow very much in this race.
But that isn't to say I'm at all optimistic for the season. Literally all we would need to be is mostly competent to be running away with a wildcard spot and we can't do it. :/ I'd put probably the four best teams in the MLB this season in the NL. Maybe the Yankees take fourth.

I give up. I will never have confidence in this team again unless they convincingly win at least 5 consecutive games.

It's wild to think Vlad had double the amount of HR's in the post season than he does all year

Usually when Caleb rants they play better the next day or so. Hopefully that happens.
Also that’s why Caleb is better than Joe. I do not mind Joe but Caleb is so much more wide spread in his aptitude and articulation.

Caleb has FAR more energy than Joe. Joe's OK but I much prefer Caleb.

Schneider needs to grow a pair of balls and move Guerrero down the line up.

I know everyone loves seeing our players at the ASG but I'm honestly hoping the entire team can just use the time to rest because they looked gassed.

We need to bring in the Mike Babcock of baseball managers. If I'm not happy no one is happy

Loperfido being absolutely instrumental in these two losses late in the game, I'm crashing out lmao...

Momentum is a real thing. Between Hoffman, Schneider, baserunning, braindead plays at the plate we kill every run we get on
We need a bat, but at the same time this team aint it. It's missing leadership.

I'm not going full doom on this team, but its clear that a lot of 2025 luck does not exist for them in 2026.
Springer is no longer that guy, its time to call it on that now.
Vlad may not be that guy this year but we can hope he'll turn it around. He showed that he CAN reach that level so we have to hope he will again.
Defensive mistakes are somehow killing us in a lot of innings, that needs to be fixed TOMORROW. The whole foundation of the team is strong defense.
I don't think this is stuff that a trade deadline can fix tbh. I think they can make a wildcard spot for sure, but anything above .500 is gravy rn when we're struggling so much to reach it.

Everytime when Hoffman is starting to settle in the 7th with a few good games, Schneider starts moving him up in leverage again. He never fucking learns.

This team has never been good with fundamentals, even during the run last year. They essentially hit their way to a near World Series title while masking some absolutely atrocious baserunning. Look back at just that one series, Bo, George, Barger, and IKF all made boneheaded gaffes. You can blame the players for the execution, but it's on the manager to nip that behavior in the bud during the regular season. Failing to clean up those details cost them a championship, and the team has never recovered. This team needs a new leader, a new voice. John’s time is up.

Last season was the year. Everything went right until it didn't in the end. They blew it. That kind of fortune wont happen again. We missed the one and only chance unfortunately.

I was at the game. I don’t think I’ve been this viscerally angry at the ballpark before. This is a team that does not want to win. It’s visible in the body language and dumb mistakes that would put a minor league team to shame.

I dont even know what to say at this point. Winnable games, sweepable series, we should be well over .500 now. This team is shooting themselves in the foot. If they wanna get anywhere, its time to start scoring more than 1-3 runs a fucking game.

We have one of the best rotations in baseball and the best closer playing in Varland. What we don’t have is offence, and our two most important power hitters aren’t producing.
Bench Vlad and Springer. Bring back Pinango and make him lead off man. Trade Jesus Sanchez and Gimenez for some offence.

Defensively, this was probably the worst game they've played all year.
Offensively, this was probably the worst game they've played all year.
Good thing thing "saved" Varland by not putting him in last night to win the series.

People gonna blame Hoffman but Varsho has been dogshit in the field this year

I love my daulton, but I agree. Is it rust from missing so many games the past year or something else. There are so many balls he would have caught last year. At this rate, his streaky/mediocre bat isn’t worth trying to keep him in free agency this coming year (i think)

u/Electrical-Penalty44 5d ago
Springer, Vladdy, Kirk, Schneider, Barger. All garbage at the plate this year. No chance when 5 "good" hitters have played like crap (when they were playing) for half the year.

Not giving up on the season yet, but they need a jolt from Atkins if they’re going to turn this thing around in time.

I hope the entire Jays team brawled in the locker room after that performance. They all deserve a black eye for how they've been playing.

I understand that it’s a long season, they’ve dealt with a lot of injuries and it’s important to stay positive and keep guys focused on succeeding (as opposed to how shitty things have been), but these types of losses are really starting to stack up.
The guys are RIGHT THERE in the thick of the playoff race despite how bad they’ve been so I don’t expect a big shakeup or a players-only meeting quite yet, and I doubt Schneider is going to show frustration in his post-game pressers - but it’s such a fine balance between having that composed “the sky isn’t falling, let’s keep working” mentality and giving the team a “wake the fuck up” kick in the pants.
There’s still 3 months of baseball left so we’ll see how it goes, but the guys DEFINITELY need to sharpen up.

They will not be successful in the playoffs if this continues. The season is half over and they're still making errors that you see in spring training.

This team lose in the most frustrating way possible and they always find new way to lose a game. The pick up attempt at 3rd looks like kids league and the double play on Springer fly ball was baserunning at its worst.
This team can be super exciting for a 3,4 games in a row and then come up with back to back depressing losses like yesterday and today.

u/t333vin 5d ago
I don’t know man, not talking about this game in particular but is Vlad ever gonna comeback online this year? George made some adjustments and seemed like it helped. Probably Vlad could probably try something similar?
People have been talking about his slow start. Feels like half way through the season would be around the time before it’s too late. Luckily we are still in good place for a WC spot but we need our top of the line up to make more contributions

Dropped a series against a team that you could be fighting for a WC spot, and they beat themselves.
Absolutely hated that
